Agger Handball

Agger made a stupid mistake that could've proved costly. That we can all agree upon. I do think Keni's got an interesting point however.

Sterling was subbed on as a signal to Rodgers intent, stay back, hit them on the counter, when we really instead should've gone for more possession, holding high lines keeping Stoke away from our penalty as every team in the Prem will have a hard time defending against their airforce.

Sterling was actually not helping our course in any way as he not only committed a few needless freekicks inviting pressure on as well as giving away a few easy balls too. This is not a dig at Sterling, he is young, and is not a "safety first" player but we obviously imo would've gained far more from a Joe Allen to ease the pressure around the box rather than inviting it on, hoping to kill them off on the counter. Wrong tactical choice, if that indeed was the logic behind the sub of course.

If he's old enough to get arrested for hitting girls, he's old enough to take shit from me.
He was shit. Didn't get anything right.
In hindsight Brendan should have brought on Ibe.

Ibe is easily the better player of the two I am sure, I do however understand why Sterling would be slightly ahead of him in the pecking order as of now with last Season in mind.

However, none of the two should've been on imo, not the right focus at home against Stoke to try and play a more counter-attacking style.

Borini should have come on

We lost Aspas ability to press the opposition when sterling came on. Borini is very good at the pressing game

OK, some amount of revisionism but I get your point. Still, Agger was part of the core whether he played left back or centre half.
I just think you need to look elsewhere for reason why we haven't finished 4th in the past few seasons.
Agger and Lucas are not it.

Read my original post. I don't consider a LB a core position. The core positions for me are GK, the two CBs, the DM or the other deep-lying CM and the central attacking player. If you have top quality players in those positions, and rotatable options in the remaining attacking positions, you've the foundations of a great team. You can make do with serviceable players in the other positions. League titles have been won with players like Irwin, Lauren, Ferreira and Clichy at full-backs.

That's not to say players like Agger, Lucas, Skrtel and an ageing Pepe cannot 'individually' be part of a top 4 side. But when they are 'collectively' your core, it doesn't bode well. You'd want at least three-four of those five positions to be filled by top quality players.

Just to show you through examples:

Early 90s United - Schmeichel, Pallister, Bruce, Ince/Keane, Cantona + (Giggs, Hughes, Kanchelskis, Sharpe)
Late 90s United - Schmeichel, Stam, Johnsen/Berg, Keane, Cole + (Yorke, Sheringham, Scholes, Giggs, Solskjaer)
Graham Arsenal - Seaman, Adams, Keown/Bould, Vieira/Petit, Bergkamp + (Wright, Overmars, Anelka)
Wenger Arsenal - Lehmann, Campbell, Toure, Vieira, Henry + (Bergkamp, Pires, Ljungberg, Wiltord)
Mid-2000s United - Barthez, Ferdinand, O'Shea, Keane, van Nistelrooy + (Giggs, Scholes, Ronaldo, Saha, Forlan)
(probably the weakest team here - hence, won only one title)
Mourinho Chelsea - Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Makelele/Essien, Drogba + (Lampard, Robben, Duff, Cole, Gudjohnsen)
Late 2000s United - van der Sar, Ferdinand, Vidic, Carrick/Scholes, Rooney + (Ronaldo, Saha, Giggs, Tevez, Bervatov, Hernandez, Nani)
Ancelotti Chelsea - Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Mikel/Essien, Drogba + (Anelka, Malouda, Lampard, Kalou)
City - Hart, Kompany, Lescott, Yaya, Aguero + (Dzeko, Silva, Nasri, Balotelli, Johnson)
United last year - de Gea, Vidic/Evans, Ferdinand, Carrick/Scholes, van Persie + (Rooney, Hernandez, Kagawa)

Our best run in the last 15 years - Reina, Carra, Skrtel, Alonso/Mascherano, Torres + (Gerrard, Benayoun, Kuyt)

Spot a trend?

Also, every defender on that list bar O'Shea, Skrtel (arguable), Berg and Lescott (arguable) is better than Agger.
Every midfielder on that list bar Carrick and Mikel (and both, especially Carrick, are arguable) is better than Lucas.

Put them together along with an ageing Pepe and Skrtel, and that's already four average players as part of your five-member core. Of course, there may be other reasons of not finishing in the top 4 (such as the lack of quality attacking options other than Suarez/Torres), but an average core has to be the foremost.

This transfer window hasn't been entirely convincing for me for that reason. I think the idea of replacing Reina was a good one, but it remains to be seen whether Mignolet is good enough. The idea of getting in Aspas and maybe Willian is also good because that'd give us a set of five quality rotatable attacking players.

But that still leaves three core positions completely unadressed - Agger, Skrtel/Toure, Lucas - none of them top quality. If this team struggles to make top 4, that'll be the reason.

He's not though. He's a good defender, but we need better of we want to compete at the highest level

Agger honour a no-brainer

I was delighted to see my fellow Dane, my fellow adopted Scouser, Daniel Agger named as Liverpool's new vice-captain during the summer.
It's a great honour for Daniel, and just reward for a player who has developed into one of the most important at the club.
Indeed, Daniel's importance will be even greater going forward, with the retirement of Jamie Carragher and the loaning-out of Pepe Reina.
He's the second longest-serving player at the club now, and by far the best defender. Last season was a major bonus in terms of the number of games he played, and the hope is that those injury problems are now behind him.
There has been some talk of Barcelona looking at Daniel, but I wouldn't be too concerned. Daniel is settled on Merseyside, he loves the club and the culture, and he is not the type to let rumoured interest, or even real interest, from another club unsettle him.
Put it this way; he won't be running to any national newspapers accusing the club of betraying him if Liverpool refuse to sell him to Barcelona!

Soon AGGER and SKRTEL and KOLO will rule the premiership as the best heart eating, emo bird being, hipster ewoks in the land.

Look, im not gonna lie, i was gonna find a picture of that black ewok, because Kolo well reminds me of a teddy bear, but then i thought thats GOTTA be racial, even though im not racial, I didnt want a whole Suarez thing happening with me (although he is obviously well a racialist) and you all having to wear t-shirts with me on them and me having to push for a transfer to www.gunners.net or some such shit, so I backtracked and you will have to find your own lookey likey for Kolo in your head YEAH keep it in your head, we dont need the publicity, because lets face it he doesnt look like the black ewok at all.
So here is some hot chicks in R2D2 dresses instead.
SO AGGER, SKRTEL and Hot chicks.

I can't remember if it's still the case, but certainly in times gone by we've been a bit frowny on the word mong, on account of it's a bit offensive.

By all means lay into Modo though
