if i went to South America with 25m what could i get ? (football wise )

Lots of pussy and cocaine.

Oh, you said football wise. You could get 1/3 of Neimar. Or 2/3 of Lucas Moura. Or one whole piece of Bernard. Or Paulinho + Douglas Costa (3 years ago). Remember however, that with most South American players (with rare exceptions) you need to allow them a couple of seasons to acclimatize in Europe, before they start showing their true potential. And roughly half of them never acclimatize at all.

Sounds about right. Not sure where Peter got 25M from.

Not sure I would sign Fabregas regardless. 27, 39 mill fee and 20 mill more over 4 years wages than Lallana.
If we're spending 39 mill I'd look somewhere else.

Lallana for about 22 mill would still be okay given the insane transfer fees going aroud. 50 mill for David Luiz isnt helping..

You'd think you fuckers were having to all do a collection to buy the fucker.

I bet most of you bang on about how we should 'find the extra couple of million to get him' when we're linked with some foreign sounding cunt that you've seen a YouTube video of & read a few reports written by journalists who saw the same youtube video & threw a few Wikipedia facts in the mix.

You think Utd fans thought Carrick was good value? I doubt it, but he won the league for Utd.

Value & top quality don't go hand in hand very often in football, for good fucking reason, the spoils are massive & competition for the best players is intense. We either go in for players with intent & winning bids or we fuck about all summer & end up with a succession of players who aren't good enough to take us to the next level.

I don't see what country is from should make a difference personally. but you want value for money otherwise you end up with another andy carroll/downing situation. we have to set a limit and then say thats it. we're not chelsea or city with limitless money. we have a few players we need so cant afford to blow half our budget on one player.

Are we signing Lallana or Gundogan?

Anything beyond 15M is a joke. Nobody has been linked to him as seriously as we have, so this means we're just letting Southampton pick a price and we go with the valuation. That's utter stupidity.

If targets aren't available at the right price, you let them go. Contrary to popular belief on this thread, we actually don't have an unlimited pool of money to spend. And if that means getting Firmino AND Konoplyanka instead of Lallana, you do the latter. It's just smart business.

You're looking at signing a 26 year old player who has been playing at a high level for just one season. Why the hell would you let the club selling that player to pick a number and blindly pay it? Because that seems to be what a lot of people seem to want, and those are the mistakes we can't afford to make anymore.

It's the same reason you buy knockoff thai footy tops for your kids instead of the actual thing. These are items you use occasionally, not staples of your life.

You spend more money on the more important things: shoes, garbage bags, mattresses. I think Lallana is closer to a shirt I use once every two weeks than the shoes I wear everyday in the context of this club. That's not to say he's on the same level as Johnson, Brad Jones, or Aspas. It's just that he'll be a player tiered with Hendo, Allen, Coutinho, and so on, so we should pay a fee with that in mind.

He's better than Allen & Coutinho.

He'd be going some to be better than Henderson but considering he covers just as much ground & contributes more goals & assists in the Southampton side I'd say he'll be on par at least.

The proof will, as always with transfers, be in the pudding, but I suspect whatever figure we end up paying will be well worth it next season.

The way his style of play fits Brendans ideas is well worth paying a few extra mill for imho.
The journos following the England training camp has highlighted his pressing game already as one of the aspects that stand out so far.
Covers as much ground as Henderson, contributes with goals and assists and can play in several postions.

We shouldnt overpay obvs, but its worth a few extra mill to get the right player if thats who Rodgers wants.
We're done with going for option C because of money. That never ends well.

fair enough but is the worry here not paying way over the odds for a player who then doesn't live up to it ? We've seen how that's set us back before . 26 , 2 decent seasons in the top flight , an english passport and you cost 25m .

I don't agree he's better than Coutinho. He was more consistent last season, though, and that's important for sustaining a regular title challenge.

As far as the fee we'll have to pay is concerned, I reckon we need to be wary of being too heavily influenced by bad previous experiences. We're now at a point in our development where we have to get a better class of player in, and a premium's going to be payable for that. For sure there has to be some kind of limit to how far beyond our preferred price we're willing to go, but we need to be VERY careful that we don't save the odd million on transfers only to lose hundreds of them later on by failing to make real progress.

Tbh I think qualifying for the CL again next season will be our main goal. Just because the amount of money from 2015 will be insane. I obviously want a title challenge but CL is a must.

Agree. John Henry's said before now that the target for this season was Champions League. I suspect we now have a standing target to stay there.

I'd rather we add some more cash and buy a younger midfielder. To me adding £15 million and buying Barkley would seem like a better investment.

There are so many younger and better options out there.
No other teams want him, alarm bells should be ringing...

If there are younger and better options out there, by all means let's go for them, but Rodgers may not agree with you about that and he's the guy whose job it is to put a winning team together.

Forget Barkley BTW. Skint as the blueslime are, wild horses wouldn't drag them or the player himself to a deal with us.

Who did we compete with for Coutinho and Sturridge? I'm not saying he's that good, just curious.

Southampton were rumoured to be in for Coutinho back then, with the Pochettino link from back at Espanyol when Coutinho was on loan there.

yep thats true. It wasn't a rumour, Coutinho even came out and said it.

This shouldn't need to be pointed out, but Barkley is never going to agree to join Liverpool.

Obviously, but I just used him as an example. Paying £40 million for a 20 year old is a better investment than 25 million or whatever for a 26 year old.

Talking of which - anyone know any decent fake footy top sites?

Absolutely. It's not a given either as there will be a 7 team scrap for four places. With the added demands of Champions League football a 4th place this season might just be a better achievement then our 2nd this time round.

Guarantee that top four finish this time round and dream the year after.
