This has to be one of the most ridiculous transfer fees in recent memory.

26M for James Milner? Really?

Anyone here know what exactly this guy has done/achieved to warrant such a fee?

Unless you actually follow the English league, most people would have nfi who he is

But Roopy's point is clear just the same LH.

Milner is a decent option - but certainly way off from being the world class player that this kind of fee seems to indicate.

I honestly think that Maxi and Kuyt are both better players at the RW position and are worth close to half that fee.

That last bit is debatable, and I'm a big fan of both, Milner has been in excellent form for some time now and is versatile and clearly has become a very good player. The price IS bad though when you consider how we're being fucked around over Mascherano, and how much Alonso went for.

I don’t think he’s worth 26mil though I do think he’s proven that he’s worth considerably more than the 12mil punt that Villa took on him last year. He’s easily demonstrated that he’s worth a place in a top side and will likely be a mainstay for England for the next few years. Fabregas aside, he was probably the standout centre mid in England last year.

Given that City have spent 20mil+ on the known-everywhere-but-unproven-in-England Silva & the known-everywhere-but-unproven-anywhere Balotelli, if I had to put money on it, I’d say that Milner will be the best signing of the lot; whether they’ve heard of him in Timbuktu or not.

Put it this way, I’d rather spend 26mil on Milner than have spent 20mil on Aquilani. And he is a much better option than either Maxi or Kuyt.

Agreed. Milner is a cracking player and can play in several spots across the pitch. In a world where homeless Portuguese third-division strikers fetch 7 or 8 million, this doesnt seem such a farfetched price.

And for the deal supposedly worth 26m for Milner, the actual cash amt quote was less than 18m right? The other 8m was the valuation on Ireland.

Given the fact Ireland was from their academy, 18m isn't too huge a price for Milner actually.

I wonder how their midfield will line up now.

Will Barry drop to the bench?
[/quote]

Their squad is certainly getting very deep now (except perhaps at the centre of defense) and is well equipped to fight in many competitions.

How is Milner valued at 26 million and Mascherano at 25?

Let's have some perspective on this.

Younger, longer term remaining on contract, English. Not saying I agree with the valuations but that's why.

Well, it's Man City, a team that paid around 20M for Lescott. And they're often buying from clubs in a big league that don't normally have to sell unless the fee is crazy.

Subtract about 30% from every Man City transfer fee and you'll be close to the truer value of the players involved.

Exactly. No point getting all worked up about fees where City are involved. I doubt Villa wanted to sell and the club who wanted to buy seem to have no limit on what they are willing to spend. So with that in mind maybe we should be surprised he didn't go for more!

I suspect that if Milner had demanded a move, City weren't interested but, say, Arsenal or United were then he would have ended up leaving for less.

He is a good player though. City need good players and don't really need to balance their books so therefore this is a decent buy for them

You be Mancini!
You have 30m to spend, do you-
A)Sign James Milner
B)Sign Kedira, Leon and Ozil?

Hmmmmmm *drums chin*

Yes, it's not the real world , but it still inflates players values, if Nando went up for sale after Milner changed hands for £26 what would that make him worth? A decent , but run of the mill player vs one of the best strikers in the world, it's gone mad, and it is another nail in the coffin of football, and it is going to implode soon. We have only just got over Chelsea fucking the market up.
Milner is a decent player but even if you knocked 30% off, he's still not an £18m player.

regards

City are still considered a work in progress and can't even offer cl footy.

He hasn't got just 30 million to spend though! He has unlimited amounts to spend and can buy whoever he likes (or whoever he can convince). There is nothing in theory stopping him doing both A and B

That's a ridiculous ammount of money for a player who's mostly decent.

Maybe he's the missing piece in the 1,000 pieces jigsaw at Citeh but I highly doubt it.

Anyways should we be looking at some of their players who's now only rarely going to get a look in?

A cheeky bid on Johnson perhaps?

What would we do with an overweight crock like Johnson other than provide him with a different city to go out and get pissed in?

Is he overweight? He looked fit againt Spurs didn't he?

I'm talking about Adam Johnson, their left winger from Middlesbrough?

Am I missing something?

?

They've just signed Johnson and he looks to be in contention for a first team place.

Keni thought you meant Michael Johnson, which makes more sense given they've just signed another CM.

No, but it looks like I was. I thought you were talking about Michael Johnson, the central midfielder.

They're not going to sell Adam Johnson. He's done well there.

Aah my bad. Forgot about their chubby Johnson.

Re Squiggles: Aren't Milner covering both right, left and center? He is NOT going to play CM at Citeh. Yaya, Kompany, Barry and De Jong are ahead of him in that position.

My bet is he'll play LW and that leaves out both SWP and Johnson doesn't it?

I doubt Mancini has a fucking clue what to do mate. He got it so wrong against Spurs at the weekend.

He's just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. There's no plan.
