We haven't really though. They're expected to do anything that might crop up, so our emphasis on attack has often left our defence short of protection.

A German friend of mine made an interesting point the other day. He said (how accurately I couldn't say, but anyway) that Klopp's preference for all-rounders in midfield rather than dedicated DMs is a specifically German trait, shared not only by Bundesliga clubs but also by the national team. My hope now is that he'll see we don't have the players in midfield to do it that way. Keita will help, but by himself he won't be enough.
That’s not exactly true though Jules. It seems that, according to those that follow BD, that Klopp played with a DM a playmaker and an offensive midfielder as his 3 in his Dortmund teams. I’ll get you the names later but I really don’t get why he’s determined not to play a DM at LFC.

I'm not sure sitting deep is Milner's best position, but for a deeper MF the lack of pace might not be quite so much of a problem and I'd still be inclined to try him there in preference to TAA, who to me needs to play wide (at least at this stage) if he's going to play MF at all.
I disagree JJ. I think pace is really important in that position, especially given our full backs play so high up. We're hopelessly exposed on the counter without it. TA-A has pace in abundance, the dynamism required to anchor a midfield and real snap in the tackle. Whether his youth will get in the way of keeping his discipline postionally is another matter, but I'd certainly give him a go there.

The last five posts have been Froggy talking to himself and seemingly hurling abuse at himself too

I think his brain is broken

I think the more fun question to ask would be whether the moneyballmen at our club would buy a defender in the next window. Knowing them clowns, don't be surprised if we buy more wingers again.

Remember the time when we used to buy GKs in bulks ?

We always seem to buy players for overfilled positions don't we ?

Since I’m on a different time zone by +7 GMT that’s often the case.

I know you get it though (you’re just trying to play the comedian - which doesn’t suit you mate as you can’t pull it off) because that’s often the case with you too !

Yeah, mate! That’s right, mate!

Someone get help before this turns into a tragedy

Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho has told ESPN Brasil that the four goals his side conceded to Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday "could have been prevented."
Harry Kane scored twice as Jurgen Klopp's visitors suffered an afternoon to forget in defence, with Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli also on target amid further uncertainty at the back.

And a frustrated Coutinho, who saw home keeper Hugo Lloris produce a spectacular stop to deny him a consolation strike, said: "The goals were goals that could have been prevented.

"It started out wide and we end up conceding one of those goals the manager speaks about.
"He speaks a lot about this -- we've conceded a lot of goals like this. And obviously in attack we were unable to score the goals necessary to draw or turn around the game.
"We were in the game during the first-half then the goal we conceded made everything worse."

Liverpool have conceded 15 goals away from home, the most in the Premier League this season and three more than bottom club Crystal Palace.
But Coutinho said he believed the problem was "not just down to the defence, it's the whole group."
He added: "The first goal started in a wide position where everyone is involved in defending, not just the players right at the back.
"We have to improve this as quickly as possible in order to win games and fight more. With difficult games like this one, we know it's these things that decide them.
"So we need to concentrate more to deal with balls like this.
"The first goal was scored after four minutes and the second one after 12 or 13. It's difficult to play away from home against a strong team when you start like that.
"We have to work hard. Those passages of play, those set pieces from wide positions. We have to concentrate more to deal with them."

He's right, and he didn't have the best of games, but there have been enough other matches where his quality has bailed us out. Certainly more than we've been bailed out by our shite defensive play.

Leftpeg obviously since he’s already stated it. Oh and Raz who no doubt believes we are going to be relegated.
My dear old thing you’ve had an awful thread and there you go again. Show me where I said Newcastle would finish above us? I said we’re in a scrap with them because we are...that’s our level at this moment. I didn’t say they’d finish above us.

I was with your point until you said Newcastle are in a scrap with us.

Nah. Not having that level of bullshit

Well they’re ahead of us now. Where do you think we’ll finish and where do you think they’ll finish? I think we’ll be no better than 6th and they’ll be no worse than 8th...so we’re in a scrap with them.

Nah, they'll get 10th-14th. Solid defensively, but not scoring much. If lascelles gets injured they're fucked

Bar Spurs and us, Newcastle have had a very decent fixture list.
Its short sighted to believe they'll be competing for 4th. A few more games against decent opposition and they'll be further down the table.

10th-14th in the end I reckon.

The manager Rafa was from 04-09 was superior to Klopp, but the current one isnt.
Fuck that.

I'm far from Rafa's fan, but what's this based on? He's had success since then. Klopp's last domestic trophy was 5yrs ago, it's hardly "current" in football terms.

As we will be if Salah gets injured. Or Mane (again). Or Coutinho.
Very true, but we have a few players who can score for us. If all of them are out we're fucked, but that's unlikely.

Defensively Newcastle look decent, but I've no doubt that they'll fall by the wayside.

If you said Watford I might have agreed with you. Them boys know their strength and are beasty for it

So, given we have this week free of games, does anyone have any faith that Klopp is going to make major changes, either personnel, tactics or both?

If he doesn't then he deserves all the abuse he gets if we don't get 3 points. Klopp needs to either make changes to certain personnel or system. But he needs to do something because what he's doing now isn't working.

No idea what's gonna happen until the end of the season but anyone who doesn't admit that Rafa's doing really well right now has an agenda. That Newcastle team has no business playing in the Premiership.

I'm not sure what he can do personnel wise. Klavan, Robertson, Arnold are our back up defenders and I can't see any of them improving the defence significantly. Likewise, none of the midfielders are particularly good at defending so I can't see much protection coming from there.

I suppose Ward might be worth a try. I saw him catch a ball once.

Fuuuuck that.

Currently reading a book about the history of the first division (pre PL era). Apparently until the early 20s the most popular formation was 2-3-5 - I say we revert to that:

Sack of Spuds
Matip Gomez
Milner Henderson Wijnaldum
Mane Firmino Sturridge Coutinho Salah
