Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Nah Carr won't be judged based on just a game. Shame he didn't get to show more, but I'm pretty sure his movement in the game, performance in drills and training sessions will give them some idea whether to take him on.

I suppose our plan to ensure we play in the same way across all levels has taken root; we score beauties and let in howlers. 🙂

Tell you what - as badly as we defended all 3 corners, a better keeper would have come out for at least two if not all of them. We really seriously need to look at the goalkeeping department because Ward, Fulton, etc. are all pretty poor.
It's hard to find a decent youth keeper because players are still growing at that age, height (and strength) are such important attributes and young keepers are unlikely to have it. Signing keepers because they are already big doesn't always work out either because it's unlikely they will have filled out.

Until we learn how to DNA test keepers to gage how tall they are likely to be, it's pretty much a lottery.

Yes. The one lad who seems to have a bit of promise is Fulton, who at least shows a Clemence-like readiness to give all his defenders earache and boss them around, which at his age is good to see.

I must keep my eye out for him.

There are companies who do that, although not sure on the accuracy. I went to a conference with work and a guy was saying he tested his son (who used to be a goalie for Chelsea youth team) and it said he would grow to be 5' 10/ 5' 11 max so made the choice to urge him to change position based on that.

I had a youth team trial for Southampton when I was younger as I hit 6' when I was 12/13. I was a shoddy goalie though due to complete lack of confidence back then!

You've been watching too much Gattaca

I don't even know what that is. I will try and find this company. Like I said, it was someone presenting at a conference on the "Power of Big Data"
It's a film where people are given jobs based on their DNA

Saw on the Twitter that a couple of chaps were talking about the u18s win over West Brom, and apparently Harry Wilson was our best player. Very good to hear as he looked wonderfully promising back in the summer at the Milk Cup. Very quick and agile young winger (only 15), looked to have lots of skill on the ball. Anyone seen any clips of the game floating about?

Hull tonight: Fulton, Baio, Maguire, Jones, Cleary, Lussey, Dunn, Rossiter, Sinclair, Trickett-Smith, Ibe.
subs: Crump, Peterson, Brewitt, Ojo, Brannagan.

Kicks off at 7pm on LFC.tv

First half an hour very cagey and scrappy. Hopeful shots from Dunn and Trickett-Smith. No real service for Sinclair, nor for Ibe. Dunn's aggression and positivity was probably the one thing that looked likely to shake a very disciplined Hull side out of their normal shape.

Half Time:

Hull defending all half with two banks of four that hardly ever shifted. Very disciplined and well-organised, if not pretty to watch. Very frustrating for LFC, who lacked good enough movement to force any errors or create any space. Lussey, Rossiter and Trickett-Smith played the odd nice ball but nothing came of it. Dunn, through sheer force of will, muscled himself into a bit of space sometimes down the right, but again couldn't finish. Late in the half a rare Hull attack broke down and Ibe finally had the chance to run with the ball and he bombed up and into the penalty area, with the keeper making a good save (Sinclair, as always, was up providing support but Ibe was probably entitled to ignore him, as he often does, the greedy git!).

Second half: we need much better runs, better movement in general, and a bit more aggression. LFC have the skills, speed and creativity but they haven't exploited any of this so far.

Yeah, they're not bad for this level, but they've been set up tonight for a smash and grab and, to be fair to them, it's gone to plan so far. With our players stepping up the pace in the next 45 minutes and showing their usual superior movement we'll see more of what they're made of.

Hull starting the second half the same way - two rigid banks of four, quite deep. But LFC showing a bit more pace and invention and have already had a couple of chances.

Yeah, sounds like its a very defensive set up so far. We probably need some magic from Ibe to break through.
