Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

What are the thoughts on Brad Smith here? When I've seen him, he's looked like a solid, low-profile player, a bit like a Finnan type of defender; goes about with his job, reliable and doesn't really draw the headlines. He's been out injured lately I think, but I was wondering if people thought he could make the grade. I think he went for the pre-season tour to the States as well.

He'll make the grade somewhere, I think. I suspect competition for his position here will prove too great, but I think he's got the potential to cope at Premiership level. He's got excellent pace, is good going forward, is tough and positive and has been improving steadily for some time now. It was really unfortunate that he got injured when he did, but hopefully he'll come back stronger. He's a bright prospect.

But what competition is there at LB though? There's Enrique, and then... nobody else other than Robinson, unless we factor in Johnson. McLaughlin played there in the NextGen game against Sporting I think, and looked subdued in that position. I suppose we'll bring in a fullback in the summer (or I hope we do!) but are we talking about just Smith vs. Robinson here for a backup slot (Robinson's a year older) or is there someone else I'm forgetting?

Well Enrique looks likely to continue as first choice. Then there's Robinson. And Johnson will fill in there. And Rodgers is said to be looking to buy another LB. Could Smith provide back-up? Of course he could. But I thought we were discussing the likelihood of him becoming first choice at some point or playing for another club. In that context I suspect he'll play for another club.

I don't think Robinson is good enough to be playing for us right now. He needs to go out on loan or sold if a decent offer comes in.

I thought Smith was a big improver this season prior to injury - just what you want to see at this age. Surprised me a bit with his pace and direct running from full-back.

I think he's decent a chance of making it here long-term.

Ah okay. Yeah, I was just thinking (for a start) good enough to do the same job as Wisdom this season; provide adequate stop-gap backup and start a few league (not just cup) games when we need him to. I suppose how he does beyond that is hard to project since he's still young and he's yet to get a break, but I'm looking at whether he's good enough to get that break in the first place. His name doesn't get mentioned too much so I was wondering if he's a forgotten one because he isn't flashy, or just that he wasn't likely to make the cut.

Got my answers now, cheers for the replies guys.

It's time for Sinclair to step up IMO. Loan him out for a few months and make a decision on him in the summer. He's going to be 17 in September FFS.

I thought he did well in his last match. He links up very well with the flashier Ibe, and he's probably the craftier of the two in terms of positional play and technique, but the pair of them are fantastic prospects.

good to hear. is he scoring regularily? I don't really follow the youth team football much? still 16?

Plus he's back in the reserves after being in the first team so he's clearly going backwards.

Yes, he turns 17 next September. He's been more of a provider recently, pulling players away to create space for Ibe, but he's doing well, I think.

As far as I know Ojo has been doing well, still only 15 and the youngest of those 3. There's a clip of him playing in an u18s game that I posted a few months ago, earlier in the thread, where he looks very impressive, a bit like a young John Barnes.

He looks like one of those players almost certain to make a few first team appearances at the very least, and probably much more than that.
