Liverpool U21s continued their preparations for the new season with a 4-1 friendly victory over Rochdale at the Academy on Monday afternoon.
Spanish youngster Suso fired the Reds into the lead just after the half-hour mark with a curling effort from the edge of the box - though the visitors drew level just moments later.
However, with 20 minutes left on the clock, Adam Morgan's superb long-range strike handed the Reds the advantage once again.
Michael Ngoo then struck a late brace to give the scoreline a much more emphatic look.
Liverpool U21s: Ward, Flanagan, Sokolik, Wisdom, Smith, Coady, Roddan (Pelosi), Suso (McLaughlin), Teixeira (Adorjan), Ibe (Ngoo), Morgan.

So with this new U21 comp , do we no longer have a Reserve team where an injured first player can come back and get some game time ? Although it seems that doesn't really happen anymore anyway.

Also was thinking how we seem to have a fair few players competing for places in this team . Wonder if a few will move on , perhaps the likes of coady and ngoo who don't seem to be rated as highly as others (on basis they didn't go on US Tour) .

Just like to wish Reece gray of Rochdale fc a speedy recovery after his serious ankle injury today in the game. Hope he back soon.

Dale's Reece Gray suffered an horrific injury in a behind closed doors friendly against Liverpool.

The Dale youngster was rushed to A & E where it was confirmed the 19-year-old suffered a dislocated ankle, a fractured tibula and a snapped medial ligament.

It is understood Gray will require surgery and is out for the rest of the year.

Dale physio Andy Thorpe told the official Rochdale AFC website: “He was taken straight to hospital where he had an x-ray and had his leg put in plaster. He’ll require surgery due to the nature of the fracture, and we expect this to take place later in the week.

"After the operation Reece will spend around two months in plaster before starting the rehabilitation process. At the moment it is looking likely that he'll be sidelined for up to six months."

The severe injury, caused by an awkward fall, is a huge blow to Gray and Rochdale boss John Coleman; with it likely the talented striker will be out-of-play for the majority of what could have been his breakthrough season.

Gray was quick to dismiss the fracture was caused through foul play, Tweeting after the accident: "Just like to reassure everyone that it was not Charlie Adams or any other player that caused my injury, was just a freak accident."

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam also added to the overwhelming support for Gray, saying: "Just like to wish Reece gray of Rochdale FC a speedy recovery after his serious ankle injury today in the game. Hope he back soon."

Reece Gray updated concerned fans earlier today (6 August): ‘Had some good news off the doc, going in for my op on Wednesday hopefully, then he reckons I could be back within 5 months, that’s minimum though."

I agree with you, I'm surprised he's lasted as long as this to be honest.
GK - you seem a bit of an expert on the youth/reserve set up. Are there any CB's you'd rate and could possibly make the step up?

Henoc Mukendi has gone on loan to Northampton.

Seeing Silva left the club after his loan stint at Northampton, what are the odds of him doing the same? 😛

On a sidenote, nice to see Aidy Boothroyd turning to our youth players as loan options.

The Under 18s job seems to be a lucky charm. 😛

Rodolfo Borrell got promoted from that role to Reserves Team coach in 2011 and a yr later Mike Marsh has been promoted as First Team coach from that role.

I'm not sure what Keni, Modo and Co would say, but personally I really have high hopes about Wisdom, and Sama has improved quite a bit in the last year or so. No one is ready yet, but I do rate those two forthe mid to long term.

I have to agree, they're not close to being ready but they're showing some promise.
Tbh I don't think Sama or Wisdom had a great season.
Wisdom was a monster last year (10/11 season) and I had high hopes for him as GK just stated, so I hope he steps up this season. Sama looked good in pre-season.

Liverpool XI 5-1 Bray Wanderers

Liverpool Starting XI : Ward, Flanagan, Smith, Sokolik, Wisdom, Coady, Ibe, Rodden, Eccleston, Adoljan, Ngoo.

Ngoo hattrick, Eccleston penalty and Suso goal (apparently via free kick)

Ngoo treble sinks Bray

Michael Ngoo fired a hat-trick as Liverpool U21s beat Bray Wanderers 5-1 in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.

Rodolfo Borrell's side played some sparkling football at times and delighted the Irish Reds who were at the match.
Suso also netted with a brilliant free-kick and Nathan Eccleston added a penalty.
The U21s are next in action on Tuesday when they face Irish outfit Crusaders.

Highlights of the reserves game against Bray last weekend, Ngoo with a hat-trick, but most pleasingly for me some brilliant glimpses of Ibe's pace and skill. He's a year younger (exactly) than Sterling, but with his physique you'd have to think he'll be more ready for the first team whenever that time comes.

Ngoo seems to have scored a lot of goals in preseason. Has he gotten a loan move anywhere? He could do with one at his age.

Where are the reserves going to be playing their games this year?

Not even heard rumours of a loan for Ngoo, but would certainly agree he could do with one. Too old for the next gen and not even close to the first team, there doesn't seem much point in him sticking around our reserves another season.

Came back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3, great performance from the lads, made up with my goal and assist

Liverpool U18s came back from trailing 1-3 to draw 3-3 away to Wolves. Almost nicked a win but missed an injury time penalty. Goals from Lussey, Peterson and Gainford

Other results: Man U 1-2 Stoke; Chelsea 6-1 MCFC; Wolves 3-3 LFC; Blackburn 1-0 Norwich
