Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Is he one of those speed merchants types like Theo / Owen / Gonzo though...? Hope he has something else in his locker as well. He looks tiny btw.

Two games tonight. Reserves/U18s playing Chester first team, and the Milk Cup semi for the u15s. I think they're both starting pretty soon.

Reserves got a much older team out than recent games, not too many in the line up we don't already know plenty about, Teixeira being the main exception, the one we got from Sportling Lisbon who was injured for ages. Full team:

Belford, Baio, Sokolik, Jones, Maguire, Roddan, Coady, Teixeira, Pelosi, Ngoo, Bijev

*well apparently Teixeira didn't start, it's Peterson instead. 1-0 to Chester btw.

As Modo says, he's just a kid. Check out Irish Red's post on the last page for impressions directly answering your question.

Half-time 2-2. Chester went 2 up and apparently were much the better team, but 2 goals from Ngoo levelled it up.

According to the guy tweeting updates Peterson and Lloyd Jones also both played well.

Milk Cup - Match 4 (Semi final)

Wednesday 25th July
Liverpool 1-1 Brentford (4-5 penalties)

Narrowly missing out on a Merseyside final which is now contested by Everton and Brentford. Jordan Rossiter said on twitter, "Last 3 tournaments been beat in the semis, gutted but we done well this week ! Quality tournament".

Reserves vs Chester. Came back from 0-2 down and won 3-2 with a brace from Ngoo and the wiinner by Nacho set up by Ngoo.

Is the tall lad wearing no. 17 at the end of the clip Henoc Mukendi?

Chester slipped to a second close defeat against strong opposition despite spirited display against The Reds.

Goals from Iain Howard and Marc Williams weren't enough to prevent Chester from suffering defeat to a youthful Liverpool XI. A Michael Ngoo brace and a strike from Jose Huertas Ortiz ensured that the Premiership side left with the victory in a tight game.

Matty McGinn went close early on with a powerful left footed drive from the edge of the penalty area that went just wide of Tyrell Belford's right hand post.

The hosts took the lead in the ninth minute as Iain Howard won the ball in midfield before running into the penalty area and placing a shot low to the right of the Liverpool 'keeper, Belford.

Chester continued to dominate the early exchanges as Robbie Booth ran at the Liverpool defence before laying the ball to Marc Williams on the edge of the area, Williams' curled the ball towards the far corner but Belford was alert and pulled off a fine save.

The chances kept coming for the home side, who showed more passion, commitment and hunger early on, as Ashley Williams found Marc Williams on the edge of the area but Williams dragged his shot wide.

Liverpool started to come back into the game but without being able to create a clear cut chance before the hosts then doubled their advantage five minutes before the break, Iain Howard laying the ball off to Marc Williams on the edge of the area before Williams unleashed a beautiful curling effort into the far corner.

The second goal spurred Liverpool on and almost straight from the restart they were back in the game as a quick counter attack lead to Kristoffer Peterson rolling the ball back to Michael Ngoo who was unmarked at the far post, Ngoo was able to roll the ball past a diving John Danby.

Two minutes later and the game was level, Ngoo again finding space, this time on the edge of the area before turning and sliding a shot passed Danby.

The Reds almost had the lead at half time as Chester switched off again and Ngoo capitalised on a short backpass and forced a good save out of John Danby to ensure that at half time the teams were level.

Chester continued to press but were also getting caught on the counter. Some lovely football between Robbie Booth, Iain Howard and Marc Williams eventually meant that the latter played a ball to Matty McGinn but his shot was blocked, Liverpool went straight down the other end and Kristoffer Peterson made a fantastic run before his tame shot was saved.

Michael Ngoo continued to cause issues for the Blues defence, especially on the counter attack and in the fifty fifth minute he beat the offside trap, from a Chester corner, before rolling the ball across goal to Jose Huertas Ortiz, who was just on as a substitute, to slot home.

The Blues nearly found an equaliser from a free kick, just inside the Liverpool half, Dom Collins was able to rise about Tyrell Belford but his effort was cleared off the line.

Chester continued to search for an equaliser and it was Collins again who came close, with ten minutes to go, as his header was deflected onto the crossbar.

Ngoo looks very impressive this season. Bit disapointed that he didnt get the nod a head of Ecclestone.

Dunn's the closest thing we've got to a young Gerrard among all the youngsters, including Shelvey. He seems to have a bit of everything: pace, versatility, good on the ball, good leader, scores goals, can beat players, brilliant left foot.

Probably the most underrated of all the young lads.

Im never getting excited about one of our kids again.
They are all always overhyped shite.
From Letallec and Baros through to Sterling and Suso.
Shite.

I read yesterday that from this season the reserves will actually be playing in a new u21 league against only the best acadamies in the country, and there seemed to be about 3 fixtures a month, which is much more like it. What do people reckon is the way forward with some of those older players - keep them for this or loan them out? I mean, I think it's basically crunch time for Pacheco, he needs to either become a squad player or be sold on, but there's a few others up there who you can level the question at:

Sama
Wisdom
Coady
Adorjan
Suso
Ngoo
Teixeira

I think all of them, bar Suso, are 19 going on 20, and all good enough for competitive football somewhere. Another thing with Suso, while I don't like his whingeing on twitter at all, I don't think he's ever actually played u18s for us - I think he went straight into the reserves aged 16, so this would be his third consecutive season at that level. I think it's only right that he's challenged at a higher level now, after we sign him up, obviously.

No I don't either, same for Adorjan. Would you be less inclined to loan the others, then, presuming you think they've got a chance of making it? I think the problem with Wisdom and Sama is that no matter how good a young centre half looks for the reserves, it's almost impossible to throw them into the first team in such a crucial position. You can't even rely on sub appearances. I think at least one of them has to go out on loan.

If the reserve system was any use I'd perhaps be more concerned about keeping a competitive group together.

As things stand I think that if a player has potential to either make it at Liverpool or bring in a decent transfer fee we should be trying to sort out decent loans as soon as the player is mature enough to go and play proper competitive football.

If someone has genuine potential and they're pissing about at the age of 19 in the reserves then something is wrong.

I tend to agree. All I'd say is that between a hopefully improved u21 league, the next gen, and cup games and sub apps for the first team, there is the *potential* for most of those players to have a decent amount of football at a good level with us. They'd have to actually be ready to make those appearances for the first team, though, to make it worthwhile.

I dont think Sama And Adorjan will make it. Wisdom looked decent when given the chance in the US, but he'll probably end up in the Championship or thereabouts.

I still think Ngoo could make it. He always looks impressive when I see him play. Would be interesting to see him go out on loan to a league 1 club and play there a full season. I like him for some reason.

Did Wisdom actually play centre half though? I thought all his time came as a right back, and he isn't really a right back tbf to the guy. I think more than anything he needs to be properly tested - I think he'd be my absolute priority to go out on loan, because he's always had loads of potential.

The problem with a centre halves, as I said before, is that they need experience as much as anything. Look at Coates, not many people think he's truly ready for for the first team and he's a 21 year old international for a quality team like Uraguay. We really need to be patient with them - a 19 year old centre back is probably the equivalent of a 17 year old attacker in terms of development, on average.

As for Ngoo, for me he's got very little chance of becoming a PL player. Certainly much less than Wisdom and Sama, but then that's just my opinion.

I think you're right. He only played right back, although he was quite decent there.

I'd let most of these players go out on loan tbh. If they develop in a positive way, a chance for the first team could be on the cards. If not maybe we can get a decent fee for them.

Utd have been making some decent money on selling the youngsters who dont cut it.

Not just those who don't cut it, but also those who do but are just blocked from progress by outstanding first team players. And it's all part of what makes an academy efficient. There's too much obsession with players making the first team. The number who, as you say, can be sold on is also a cause for praise.

TALK about having friends in high places!

Following a reception recently in Carnlough, some of last season’s successful Northend U9 team had the privilege of meeting the current Liverpool Manager, Brendan Rodgers, who was very interested in the good work being done at Northend United Youth.

Brendan went on to speak to the boys and inform them that he would follow their progress from his base in Liverpool, whilst inviting them across for a look at the Premiership Club’s Youth set-up.

Liverpool XI against Rochdale was: Reina, GlenJo, Kelly, Agger, Robinson, Adam, Lucas, Shelvey, Eccleston, Carroll, Pacheco.

The game only lasted 50-55 minutes because a Rochdale player received a bad injury and had to be taken to hospital.

But Liverpool were winning 2-1 against Rochdale, thanks to goals from Glen Johnson and Nathan Eccleston.

First time i've seen Kelly being played in the centre for the first-team. I bet the Rochdale player was taken out by Adam the animal.
