Youth / Reserve Team Thread... 2010 - 2013

Is he out of contract or are we letting him go? We should really have insisted on a 25% sell on fee.

I think we must just be letting him go. Surely someone on the forums would've noticed if he'd been coming to the end of his contract, particularly given he spent the last few months out on loan.

People, he's just not good enough. Anyone who's been watching reserve football regularly knows this and of course there will be a clause in whatever deal we make with Barnsley.

From the Official:

Liverpool can today confirm Toni Silva has completed a transfer to Barnsley, subject to confirmation from the relevant footballing bodies.
The 18-year-old midfielder joined Anfield from Benfica in the summer of 2009 and spent the latter part of the 2011-12 campaign on loan at League Two outfit Northampton Town.
Everyone at LFC would like to wish Toni all the very best for the future.

Milk Cup - Match 2

Monday 23rd July
Liverpool 3-0 Union Temuco (Chile)

Matthew Rimmer
Marko Dabro
Jack Alexander (pen)

Looking likely Everton and Liverpool will meet at some point. Both have 6 points from 2 games along with Watford.

Sinclair looked really excellent again in the 8-4 win against Bury for the U18s. So powerful, it is hard to believe he's only 15. Rooney-like.

Saw the highlights from the game earlier today. Is Sinclair only 15? What a fantastic prospect.

Word is, that the Academy staff see Sinclair as an even more exciting prospect than golden-boys Sterling and Suso. I've seen only a little of him, but what I have seen puts him in the terrifyingly good category.

I remember when Sinclair signed reading that one of his coaches had previously coached Daniel Sturridge at a similar age, and considered Sinclair an even bigger talent.

He does seem to have a bit of everything: pace, power, trickery, brilliant movement, great technique. I'm really looking forward to watching the 18s this season, with Sinclair and Ojo involved full time, and O'Hanlon, Dan Smith, and Lloyd Jones the other big signings all playing a part. Then there's the other big prospects like Dunn, Lussey, and one or 2 others to keep an eye on. It's an exciting group - very, very young though, so might struggle a bit at first.

Milk Cup - Match 3

Tuesday 24th July
Liverpool 3-0 Swindon Town

Matthew Rimmer
Corey Whelan
Jordan Rossiter

Got a chance to go and watch this one. We controlled the game throughout and the scoreline could've been even more emphatic. My picks from the game were:

- Corey Whelan - centre-half, cleared one off the line at 0-0 and leapt up well from a corner to score the second. Generally passed the ball well around the back.

- Jordan Rossiter - box-to-box centre midfielder and captain who likes to hit the ball over the opposition full-back from deep. Always wanting the ball, tries to find space before receiving it, even dropping back to do so. Could be great as long as he continues to work hard.

- Oluwaseyi Ojo - looks about 5 years older than his actual age. Tall, physically-imposing and hard to shrug off the ball. I dunno whether that's because he's just so much more physically developed than the rest of the players at that age group or whether he's very good at shielding the ball. Quite similar to Sergio Busquets in that regard. He's also very tidy on the ball with pretty good technique, little feign passes then dashing off in the opposite direction. You could tell he could shift up another gear if he wanted to because he does possess a good turn of pace when he wants to utilise it, although he rarely did as he more or less just strolled about in the middle playing short passes. Though that could be down to playing a game late last night at 7pm.

- Leaving the best to last, my Man of the Match - Harry Wilson - Small in stature, Welsh, natural left footer but plays on the right wing and has pace to burn. He doesn't seem to be like these brainless flying machines though, he's very clever on the ball lifting his head and selecting the right option. He was a constant threat on and off the ball with Rossiter looking to ping it over to him and pressing the oppositon left-back when they had the ball. Took the corner for Whelan's goal and started the move on the halfway line for the third, which was a very, very good goal. If I was to choose one player from that squad to make it he'd be the one.

--------------------------------------

That's 10 goals scored (below), three clean sheets in their three games and looking down at the other 19 teams, with the top 4 now going into the semi-finals.
Wilson (2)
Rimmer (2)
Ojo
Rossiter
Corey Whelan
Hutchins
Dabro
Alexander (pen)

....And onto the semi-finals with a possible Merseyside derby awaiting in the final with Everton looking to retain their trophy and win their 4th Milk Cup in the past five years at this level:

Everton v Watford
Liverpool v Brentford

Thanks a lot for the impressions mate. Glad to hear Wilson impressed again, I thought he looked brilliant in those short highlights of the first game. Not just his obvious pace and balance, but as you say, he looked like an intelligent passer when creating another goal.

Was Ojo just playing in central midfield then? Does sound like he was playing within himself a bit, cos he's usually described as an attacking mid or winger in the reports I've read, and a prolific one at that.

Yeah, he was playing centre midfield, we actually lined up quite similar to how we're expecting the first team to this season.

There were one or two bursts from Ojo, but I would've liked to have seen it more. He played a part in the third goal aswell sliding it onto Rossiter. I'm not saying he played badly now, just didn't impress as much as Wilson. You can tell the boy has quality and I think it was a case of playing within himself as you say and playing 3 games in 4 days.

Forgot he was involved in the first goal aswell.

Can you imagine Wales' midfield in 5 or 6 years time if things go to plan:

--------------------Ramsey--------Allen-------------------
----Wilson------------------------------------------Bale----

We'll just need to find a GK, 4 defenders, 2 strikers and the world cup will be ours.

I prefer to imagine our midfield in 5 years' time:

-------------------------------Lucas--------------------------
----------------------Allen-------------Ojo-------------------
-----Wilson----------------------------------------Sterling--

*daydreams*

Btw I'd been trying to remember for ages who Wilson reminded me of, in his style of play. It came to me this morning: Eden Hazard. So no pressure then.
