Ok get that, but the last time a foreign power took Moscow was when? In the UK London was taken by the Dutch in 1688. We all know that pretty much every mainland European nation was taken by the Nazis 80 years ago. But have Russia ever been beaten apart from by themselves?

The Dutch were basically invited to take over and a good amount of their forces were British exiles so it wasn't really that London was taken in a military victory. It was really a coup with some Dutch muscle with William invited to come in and replace James II.

I think what Napoleon did was underestimated, Russian abandoned Moscow as they hadn't a hope of defeating them, and I'm not sure, abandoning and destroying your own city, which took half a century to recover was really a success for Russia.

None of these involved taking Moscow (nor was it needed) and each time it led to a period of reforms and social progress in Russia - abolition of serfdom and Alexandr II reforms in 1860’s, 1905 revolution that led to constitutional monarchy and 1990 dissolution of the USSR. If you think about it, losing wars was literally the only way and the only time Russia made any social progress in the last few centuries.

Let's hope so, but I'd be concerned about the risk of someone/something even worse coming down the pike. This is NOT to say I want Putin to survive, but his departure would carry its own risks with it.

The best guess is that he did have some kind of surgery a year or so ago, but no further details are known. Putin’s health is basically a closely guarded state secret. So people have to make guesses based on things like these, when ambulances are suddenly rushing to the Kremlin. If he does kick the bucket, they will hide it as long as possible.

I suppose in the UK, and countries where joining the army is voluntary, they're the type of people who sign up in the first place.

No, I think those 18 who ran away were part of a smaller group that were sent to the front line in the Kursk oblast. They might be trying to make it to Poland or Ukraine.
