WWIII Return of the Ruskie

How many weeks will it take before this army of old fellas, odd balls and IT experts come face to face with a motivated and highly trained Ukrainian army?
If I was an IT expert who had just been conscripted into the Russian army I would be soon gaining an entry in the Guinness book of world records for the quickest defection.

In hindsight, the whole Z thing, which seemed kind of cool at first, was probably an early indication of just how bad the Russian army really is.

“General how will we stop our men from shooting at each other?”

“Errr… let’s get them to paint a massive zed on all our stuff.”

“Brilliant general. Just brilliant. But aren’t you worried that the Ukrainians will somehow break our code? If they figure out the whole zed thing they’ll be able to pretend to be us really easily.”

“Quiet you.”

To be fair, I know of no Ukrainian putting on the Z sign during the whole war, even for disguise. People despise it; it’s basically the updated swastica.

Putin cudda left all this months ago.
Given some BS about putting the West in its place and claimed a moral victory.
But he's all in.
Now he might end up losing at home also.
With those able to running away and those unable to... well let's see who they end up fighting

The Chinese military looking at their white skinned enemies being bent over and violated by their own brutal dictator, without a single sufficiently large bollock amongst them to take him out:

The Xi Jinping coup rumours are the most ridiculous thing ever.

The CCP big heads are meeting now in preparation for the 20th Party Congress next month, which is held every five years.
One of the big ticket items on the agenda is the amendment of the CCP constitution, along with the report by the 19th Central committee to the 20th National Congress. They are going to entrench Xi's authority with these amendments and elevate his ideas to those of Mao and Deng.

The idea that Xi can be ousted is a nonsense fantasy of American conspiracy theorists and no one else. Xi is ridiculously popular in China. He's probably the most popular politician domestically in the world now.

Unfortunately I am neither a Chinese national nor supporter. I'm just a realist. Some things are inevitable in our time. Modi in India, right wing nationalists in Europe, Man City winning the title, the Tories winning again, and Di Caprio getting laid. I'm pretty much just stating the obvious.

From the analysis I read the rumour was originated on Chinese-language internet and spread most enthusiastically by Indians…

Domestically, covid lockdowns have been unpopular, but the invasion of Ukraine has been an unexpected treat for China's foreign policy. Now Russia is sucking up hard to China, Kazakhstan and the other Central Asian countries view China as a better policeman than Russia, and NATO wouldn't want to kick off another front of conflict with a geo-political power. Meanwhile, Japan and S.Korea are too freaked out by the crazy North Koreans to worry about China. So it's free to continue with its abuses in Xinjiang / Tibet and intimidate Taiwan.

Looks like a humanitarian disaster is developing on the Russia-Georgia border. Tens of thousands of Russian men are trapped between a high mountain and a river gorge trying to escape mobilization by fleeing into Georgia (ironically another county that was invaded and remains partially occupied by Russia - to enter they will have to sign a document certifying that they consider Abkhazia to be illegally occupied by Russia and condemn the actions of their own government). The temperatures at night are freezing and many didn’t bring warm clothes and enough food to last days it now takes to pass, while the line of cars has almost completely stopped moving - lots are abandoning their cars and trying to make it through the mountainous terrain on foot. The video is a couple of days old; at this point according to eyewitnesses the road has become completely impassable for car traffic in both directions.

No one knows what these hungry, freezing and angry men will do once either Georgia or Russia completely closes the border, which seems inevitable in the next few days. There are already reports of fights for food and basic supplies. This is getting ugly really fast... Meanwhile, on the Ukrainian front, there are reports (from the Russian side) that the first train carrying the newly mobilized conscripts arrived in the Luhansk region – they didn't give them even a week training! – and was promptly blown up to bits by the Ukrainian artillery as soon as it stopped. Ukrainian bloggers say that the videos of the aftermath circulating on the Russian Telegram are too horrific to be shared. These guys didn't stand a chance...

Meanwhile muslim-majority Dagestan looks to be the first Russian province where people are starting to realize it might be easier to fight off Putin's goons than be sent to fight and die in Ukraine. More of this, please!

I'm surprised Russia didn't close the borders before announcing this mobilisation.

Did they really not see this panic coming?

What the fuck is going on over there?

As an aside, I see Snowden has been granted Russian citizenship. Eeesh, bet he's like out of the frying pan and into the fire.

I suppose they figured they could make do even if a few thousand made their way across the borders. Plenty of subservient ethnic minorities in Buryatia, Sakha, etc who won't or can't run - no access to a nearby border or a plane. And plenty of stoic low income Russian men in the countryside who are just resigned to their fate.

Closing the borders would have incited even greater panic among the city kids, who appear to be Putin's main concern.

If I were to guess...

Well Germany didn't want to provide tanks to Ukraine in case Russia turned off the gas.
Now the gas is off anyway, so.....

Or Russia got the wrong pipeline and were aiming for the Norweigan to Poland pipeline.. I expect that will he hit 'in retaliation' in any case.
