Might be on my own here, but I really like Wellbeck. He's a talented footballer.

I thought he did really well in and retaining, possession, he was truky shite in front of goal though. Still, I agree that there is a lot more to come from him.

I am absolutely made-up for Stevie G. It will be a fitting crowning to his career if he can lead England to the quarters, or even semis if we can get on a roll a la Robson in Italy when I think we actually deserved to make the final against a shite Argentinian team that lucked out.

In a recent thread I started I picked out Townsend as Spur's top player so far this season, extremely talented I was delighted when he was picked against Montenegro and I hope he will now be a regular starter. His aggressive attacking play, and pace, is great to see.

That England team looked amongst the best I've seen for maybe a decade ! Even the bench had good options. Definitely something to work on when Cole (or retain Baines) and Johnson return. Carrick damn solid in MF too. The main weakness, and concern, was the CB pairing. Let's hope Hodge brings some younger players through in time for Brazil and doesn't revert to the Old Guard.

You've said this for a while - but the lad cannot score goals, and he's a 'striker'. Hodgson, credit to him, has actually put him in a position where he can do the most with his talent.

He's similar to Kuyt, with a better touch and not nearly as capable of chipping in with goals.

Wellbeck looked gash in front of goal.

He tracked back & worked fucking hard, which, bizarrely seems to be the number one priority for strikers these days, call me crazy, but I like strikers who can score too.

Townsend played well, I worry he'll hit the wall that so many players do as the opposition look at the way he plays. He's not exactly subtle, so may struggle at some point.

Fuck, even lampard did a job when he came on, even if it was mostly trying to stop them playing & breaking up play rather than pushing forward with it.

Stevie gave everything. Unfortunately he'll have a hangover wen he plays from us.

How I wish he'd break into he box like that for us just once or twice a game would do, I know he can't do it all match anymore.

He's a handful and is scoring more this season, after scoring "1" last year. It's a bit ironic though. Crouch used to get stick on here constantly, because "strikers should be judged on goals".

Rooney was absolutely superb from 35th min until the end. Deserved MOM.

Gerrard, baines and Townsend also excellent.

Fucking made up, well done England. Proud out captain is leading his country at a World Cup and even more proud that Scousers won the game tonight.

You Scouse bastards.... Etc

...when Graham Zusi saved Mexico with his equalizer against Panama in the second minute of added time, the TV commentators for the Mexico match erupted in delight while showing both matches in split screen. "Gol de Estados Unidos!" the Mexican commentator shouted before switching to English to say: "We love you! We love you forever and ever! Ahhh! God bless America!" And then when Aron Johansson scored again for the U.S. seconds later, the party in the broadcast booth continued...before eventually resuming their criticism of their own team as they put in another unacceptable performance against Costa Rica.

Oh I suspect you are.

He has no grace, no subtlety and lacks a conclusive end product. Tonight summed him up. He looked out of his depth and surprised to even be there. If we England have to rely on the likes of Welbeck (or Cleverley for that matter) in Brazil....we have to have someone better.

But you do like to fly in the face of popular opinion Ryan.

He's scored 2 goals in the league this year ... In the 1st game! I don't think he'll get over 5 because a) he's the 4th best striker on that team and b) his versatility means he can be thrown to the flanks.

Welbeck scored 2 goals in 40 games last season.
He's a decent player but he isnt a striker. He's better as a winger imho.

He's a bit out of his depth playing for England and shouldnt be starting.

Totally agree, he's Premier League quality but not good enough to start for a team with trophy-winning ambitions and certainly not good enough for a supposed major International team. I don't know one United fan who wants him in their line-up.

By the way, Baines has done nothing wrong in the two games and should never be dropped from the starting line up.

He's good but Cole is world class. Biggest difference is that you can shunt a diff ball to Cole who will handle it and retain possession, whereas Baines is not as good. His crossing is better though.

I think it was LeTissier in the SKY studio last night who suggested that Baines should now be seen as the No.1 left back for England - it's hard to disagree.

Really? I'd be amazed if he's still at Utd in a couple of years (unless they continue their decline under Moyes). You can only get so far running around a lot. Just ask Milan Baros. There's no doubt he gets himself into dangerous positions, but he's got the composure of a frightened child. He shouldn't be anywhere near the England team at the moment. Bags of energy, but looks out of his depth at international level, for me.

I think he'll be a mid-table Premier League player once people have realised his rough edges can't be smoothed off.

There's not many better left backs in the world at the moment. The consistency of his deliveries is quite astounding. If Utd were going to spunk a load of money on an Everton player, it should have been him.

It was hard not to be impressed by England last night against a Poland side who were far from shit.

Rooney, Townsend, Welbeck and Sturridge all in an 11 from Roy Hodgson.

And an England side who played with a lack of fear in an important match. We didn't bumble our way through by trying to keep possession and hope for an opening. We went for it and it paid off.

We're still a bit shit like and we'll go out in the quarters, but I'm optimistic we'll go to Brazil and have a real go at it and play in the right spirit. That's all I can ask for from an England side at the moment.

And Townsend look an absolute star. Imagine flogging your best winger for £85M and then having this youngster come through and look every bit as good! Sickening,

After qualifying for the World Cup thanks to a 2-0 victory over Poland, England’s next major concern is what could be a nightmare finals draw in December.

And, as it stands, Roy Hodgson could have to manouevre his way out of a group which contains either hosts Brazil, defending champions Spain, Argentina, or Germany.

England’s hopes of clawing their way into the top seeds suffered what looks to have been a fatal blow when Fifa decided the outcome of November’s friendlies would not be taken into account.

General secretary Jerome Valcke revealed the rankings as of Oct 17 would be used to determine which teams would be seeded, as opposed to those at the time of the draw on Dec 6.

England went into Tuesday’s match against Poland 17th in the rankings, short of the top-eight position required to be a top seed in Brazil.

Brazil are guaranteed to be in Pot A because of their host status, with England set to be placed among the lower-ranked European qualifiers in one of the other pots.

The remaining pots will be divided up along geographical lines, the nature of which will be determined by precisely which countries qualify.

The process is designed to prevent any of the eight groups containing more than two European countries or more than one country from other confederations.

The change in determining the seedings came about after it was deemed unfair that countries involved in competitive play-offs in November could obtain more additional ranking points before the draw than those which had already qualified and therefore ended up playing just playing friendlies.

Seeded teams Spain, Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Switzerland, Colombia, Uruguay/Holland.

Cole is the better defender but Baines is ahead of him in every other aspect for me.

Can't be dropped the way he's played in the last two.

I see Suarez taking some heat again online for 'diving' for the penalty he won.

As for Baines Vs Cole debate. I'm on the fence. If it was a must win match against Germany in the QF or something to the effect, I'd be selecting Cole. I know Baines gives you an excellent dead ball and attacking verve but Cole is a better defender. Baines takes a mean penalty but Cole also has history of taking and scoring for England in shoot outs.
