Your favourite World Cup Match ever. Go...

I'll go with Brazil-Italy in 1982.
Italy 4 W.Germany 3, semi-final in Mexico 1970 which was, hands down, my favourite World Cup ever.

Are you, erm, seasoned enough to remember 66 Jules?

Ouai, mon vieux, I was already approaching my 12th birthday. It was the summer after my first year of studying French as it happens.

I wonder if Diego Maradona can get this team to work?
I was looking earlier at their forwards -
Ezequiel Lavezzi
Diego Milito
Carlos Tevez
Gonzalo Higauin
Sergio Aguero
Angel DiMaria
Lionel Messi.
I know he's a mental cunt, but surely given the fact he has a defensive shield of Mascherano and Gago he can lay the attacking options down to get them firing.
They've never had great keepers but with Burdisso, Samuel etc they have a decent defence. But really that's not what will (if anything) take them far. It'll be the fact they have 6 or 7 of the best attackers in the world.

Regardless of the evidence, regardless of how patchy they were in qualifying, regardless of his proclavities for fucking with the team .. Regardless of all those things I can't write them off. They have such a talent pool to choose from.

It's an interesting one alright Oncy.

I'd go with a front 6 of this...

----------------MASCHERANO-----CAMBIASSO---------------

MESSI------------------------TEVEZ---------------------DI MARIA

-------------------------------HIGUAIN--------------------------

I agree for the group games, but into the big sides I'd be tempted to play Gago and drop DiMaria and switch to 4-3-3. Otherwise a Spain or a Brazil would rape them.
It's gonna be fun to see how they go.

To be honest though, I'm not really sure Maradona has a clue.

Look at how Dunga sets his team up, the formations he deploys. He's got a clue. God knows if Maradona does.

I think the Masher-Cambiasso axis is perfect though. Balanced, disciplined, robust. You could stick any four out of that list you of players you named above in front of them, and they'd do well.
I agree. He's the Achilles heel for them. He hates Higuain and Messi and has wherever possible fucked them both over. In particular higuain who he played every man and his dog in front of, even the 63 year old Martin Palermo at one point.
He's a tactical spastic (spastical) and if it wasn't for the fact you look through that squad and fucking drool I'd say they had no chance at all.
I think Spain have the best squad, then Argentina, Holland and Brazil.

Aye.

The importtance of having a good manager with a serious tactical plan at a World Cup cannot be underestimated. Compare that Argentina team you just listed with the Italian outfit that won the last World Cup, and it's a fucking joke.

That's the difference between a Lippi and a fat wobbly mess I suppose.
*whispers* that's kinda why I'm so excited mate. I know you won't like it, but I think we have probably the finest manager at the world cup. Sadly our squad has more holes in it than a block of Gouda. But if anyone can make it work Capello can.

Hargreaves and Lennon both fit and training again apparantly.
Hargreaves possible for the bench tonight, Saturday at the latest. Lennon is a certain to play a part in the derby given what's at stake for them.

Lennon is absolutely VITAL to that England team.

They can replace others in the side (probably not Rooney actually) but their right-flank is the only area on that side that Capello lets the side loose. It's where their pace, drive, and ability to stretch comes from - they're pretty much exactly like the Man United side; Cole and Gerrard on the left play the same as Evra and Nani, and everything's geared towards freeing up the pacy winger on the right in Valencia and Lennon. Without Lennon, it's a very pedestrian England side.

Hugely important they get him fit.

By the way, I don't even think Lennon's that great. But he fits well into that side, and makes a significant difference.

You're comparing Gerrard and NANI?
No.

I'm comparing the formations between Utd and England.

United's left-wing with Evra and Nani doesn't provide any pace, drive or ability to stretch defences?

Wow. Even by your standards, that's some proper horseshit.

Fuck me that's impressive to say the least.

JJ is younger than I thought.

That Argentina team is frightening on paper. If they had a good manager they'd be a good shout to win it. Unfortunately, they don't.

I'm really looking forward to this World Cup. I always forget International tournaments and what's happened in them within a year rather inexplicably. But I can remember whole Liverpool seasons up to ten years ago. Go figure.

World Cup organizers say 500,000 tickets are unsold and fear "tragic" empty stadiums at football's showcase event.

FIFA said Friday the tickets would go on sale to the general public in South Africa from April 15. Organizers have less than two months to sell nearly a quarter of the tournament's total match tickets to avoid empty seats.

Organizers conceded their online process was not suited to local fans, who are generally poor and not used to buying tickets on the Internet.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke says "there is always time to learn."

Organizing committee chief Danny Jordaan says it would be "tragic" for the host country if stadiums were empty and urged fans to "go buy now."

A FIFA executive says a terrorist threat has been made on the World Cup.

Secretary general Jerome Valcke commented Friday on an online magazine article that said "how beautiful" it would be if a bomb exploded at the U.S.-England game June 12 in the South African city of Rustenburg.

Valcke says World Cup organizers are working at the "highest level of security."

The comments appeared to come from a contributor to a militant online magazine called "Yearners for Paradise," not the usual sites used by al-Qaida and other groups to make threats. In the article, the author says he is not a spokesman for al-Qaida.

Cheeky fecker. ;D

I'm looking forward to this World Cup too. For one thing it'll make a pleasant change after the kind of season we've had and, for another, England - despite not being favourites, and rightly so - have a slight chance, thanks mainly to Capello, if they get the rub of the green.

Haha it was sort of a compliment, it doesn't really look like one now admittedly. I just pictured you in your 70's the way you go on ha!

This really should be a good world cup, though. I hope the authorities don't balls it up. Has the stadia actually been completed yet? And is that the correct use of "stadia"?

OK, quick grammar lesson first - "stadia" is certainly the correct Latin plural of "stadium" but, as it's English we're using, either "stadia" or "stadiums" is fine. That sentence ought to say "Have the stadia been completed" though. 😉

The answer to the question is: I don't think so, not yet, but the organisers are adamant that they will be. A more serious problem may be combating the high level of crime in the country with all those visitors around. I have a friend and ex-colleague who's S.African and she doesn't give much for their chances of having a trouble-free tournament. Fingers crossed.

Was just gonna type France-Brazil 86 actually. Absolute fucking belter.
Denmark v Uraguay 86
Holland v Argentina 98
Senegal v Uraguay 02.
Not including sentimental games like Northern Ireland v Spain, Ireland v Italy, England v Argentina etc.
Although I've got the 1966 final on DVD and it was a fucking great game tbf.
Holland v Argentina 78. Absolutely incredible match and the one that confirmed Argentina could win the whole thing.

That 98 game was a ripper as well - will always remember Bergkamp in that game, his cusioned header and the way he bought that long ball down in the area as though it was made of velcro.

This montage from SBS for the FIFA 98 World Cup remains my favourite to this day.

Class.

A well organised event this will be:

Thousands of fans who queued overnight in South Africa finally got their hands on World Cup tickets, but scuffles broke out as computers crashed.
Some 500,000 tickets were sold at various venues on Thursday.
But police used pepper spray to control frustrated fans and in Cape Town a 64-year-old man died from a heart attack.
The tragedy in Cape Town came after fans from all over the country had queued from Wednesday afternoon as World Cup fever gripped South Africa.
Tickets for all matches, including the 11 July final, remain available.

GORDON FARQUHAR'S BLOG
Cash-paying South Africans are much less likely to be interested in the pricier tickets which stretch to well beyond the country's minimum weekly wage
BBC sports news correspondent Gordon Farquhar said Fifa's integrated ticketing computer had encountered problems, resulting in long waiting times for queuing fans.
After three and a half hours in Cape Town, only 32 people out of a crowd of about 1,000 had managed to buy tickets.
"No one's informed us about what's going on. No one's directing the public outside," said Theo Spangenberg, who had been waiting for 16 hours and still had not made it inside the newly opened ticketing centre.
"For a World Cup, an international event of this nature, it's a really, really bad show."
The ticket centres opened across the country at 0900 (0800 BST) for the last phase of sales.
One man fortunate enough to get tickets was Malin Fisher, a 32-year-old trainee church minister. Fisher was first through the doors of a shopping mall in Soweto and spent more than 10,000 rand (£880) on six tickets, including two for the World Cup final.

South African fans have been snapping up the available tickets
"The internet and applying was a bit frustrating but to be able to buy World Cup final tickets over the counter, that was amazing," he said.
BBC Africa correspondent Andrew Harding said there were exuberant scenes in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, where people camped out on the street through the night.
"I just want to be part of the magic of 2010," said Deon McCarthy. "That's why I'm here. Look at the atmosphere, the spirit here. It's great."
Many South Africans had complained the original process, by which tickets were sold through Fifa's website or in a complicated ballot at a local bank branch, excluded people without web access, credit cards or the disposable income to pay months in advance.
"We are excited about these new initiatives, which make the process much easier for everyone," said World Cup 2010 boss Danny Jordaan.
"We have always said that it is important that we make this World Cup more accessible to the people and with over the counter sales, we believe this measure is consistent with the needs of the fans."

BBC NEWS BLOG
Foreigners may not be buying tickets as quickly as Fifa had hoped. But the size of the queues and the amount of enthusiasm on display suggests that South Africans could easily make up the difference
Andrew Harding
Fifa and local organizers had come under pressure to sell a large tranche of tickets for the month-long tournament beginning on 11 June with so many remaining unsold.
Ticket prices are well above normal for top-level football in South Africa.
Those in a special category for local residents sell at 145 rand (£13), but costs escalate drastically in other categories and for games after the first-round group phase.
Prices for premier seats at the final come in at 6,582 rand (£581).
Demand in South Africa had initially been sluggish but the most recent phase saw 85% of the 240,000 tickets sold between February and the beginning of April go to locals.
Fifa has since revealed that 2.2m tickets have been sold for the tournament

I youtubed 'best world cup games ever' and most of the top few hits were people playing games on their computers.

What the fuck is wrong with this World?

We need a new Ice Age. At least. Where is Yuri Andropov when you need him?
