what the FUCK is up with these england managers? lampard with a holding midfielder, gerrard of rooney, fucking OBVIOUS but no england manager wants to do it.
Its a friendly. To asses different players readiness to go to S.A. What exactly would he learn from playing what you suggested? Capello will play the team he thinks best equiped to win come America, but he needed to try out Cole, Huddlestone, Carrick, Bent and others before he finalises his squad.
We know what our best plan A is, but we need to try out a plan B and C too.

It never ceases to amaze me that there should be such overreaction to any result England make that isn't a thumping victory. A friendly where borderline players are tested is not the basis on which to declare that all hope is lost.
Quite. We got what we expected from the two games. Steadiness from our best players but not a great deal of cohesion or fluidity from the teams overall.
Of the 'fringe' players I would say that Cole, Huddlestone and Carragher have done themselves the least harm. Carrick, Walcott and Bent were not good in either game.
It's tough to say who'll get cut to be honest. I'm certain that Bent and Parker won't make it though.

England have an easy group anyway, no need to worry.

We even managed to put three past Algeria this week

Capello beasted the players on the training camp trip, so it is no surprise they are looking a bit flat. Next ten days is sharpness and speed work, so I expect a totally different attitude and application come June 12.
Plus, half of that team today are shite anyway.

And what's he going to learn about these fringe players that he hasn't in the last few years? Plan B and C? Isn't it a bit late to start working those out?

I didn't watch the game and am not arsed either way at this stage, but the one thing the England team - no matter who is playing - is fluidity and understanding. We should play our starting eleven at every given opportunity and then maybe we'd resemble more of a team, like the other international sides.
I disagree.

I gathered that much otherwise you would have posted something along the lines of my post to begin with.
Aye. I dunno maybe you're right.
But our best 11 has played in qualifying so we know how it performs. We need to see who else is ready. And most importantly what we do if Gerrard, Barry, Lampard or Rooney are injured.

In all reality, we'd probably be preparing to see the team crash out.

So I just read on the BBC that we were pretty crap. Anyone show good signs?

Bent? We could really do with a player *like* him to play alongside Rooney.

No, bent was poor. Joe Cole was standout, he played really well. Gerrard and Rooney linked well too, and Ashley Cole played well.

Another 2 goals from your favourite player too.

I've thought all along that Bent was one of those good club players who just wouldn't quite have what it takes to play international footy. If we play another striker with Rooney dropping off him it has to be Crouchy for me, with Defoe as an impact sub or Shrek's stand-in. The one drawback with Crouchy is that his inclusion won't do much for the tempo of our attacks, but we should have enough pace out wide to compensate for that.

Cole's place should never have been in doubt IMO. I think he's had a raw deal off Ancelotti personally, and he never lets England down.

Yep. Bent has been terrible in practically every appearance he's made in an England shirt (admittedly only a few). Heskey is just ridiculous, that miss summed up everything about him, and when he wasn't doing that he was limping around like a kid looking for sympathy, like he's done for practically the whole of his career.

Crouch.

I was out, so was reading the BBC text commentary.

At one point it simply said:

"Heskey. Is he good at anything?"

That was written by the Beeb reporter BTW, not some random texting in.

if cappello doesn't go with the obvious team, the team that practically picks itself then fuck him. I'm fed up with seeing a manager too clever for his own good. lennon on the left? joe cole in the hole when gerrard has played there all season? heskey anywhere near the squad? fucking hell...
Why are you so angry about a manager potentially doing something you don't agree with? Why don't you calm the fuck down?
If capello picks Cole in the hole then fine, I don't mind. So long as we win.

Agree, and would add that (a) that's the position Cole prefers and (b) Stevie dropped back to CM later (too late, in fact) in the season.

Rooney still likes to drop deep anyway, so the problem with Gerrard in the hole is that we've essentially got three World Class players running into the same area of the pitch. Gerrard needs to drop back into midfield because we've got no one else and you just can't leave out players like Lampard (despite him being disappointing, again). The more World Class players in the team, the better chance we've got, so long as Capello finds the right balance with it all.

----------------Hart---------------
Johnson-?????--Terry---A.Cole
-----Gerrard-Milner-Lampard---
Lennon-----------------------Cole
---------------Rooney-------------

From the three in midfield one of them can 'hold' with licence for all three to burst forward when needed. The only issues are over the wide play, where there just isn't enough goals to support Rooney, we'll just have to hope that what we've got from Terry (at setpieces), Johnson, the midfield and Rooney is enough. There's definitely room for manoeuvre with it all though, Cole could play the hole position, Crouch can come in and provide a different option, etc.

there is a lot of talk that gerrard and lampard will start in the center of midfield in the game v USA. sigh...
so you are going to restrict one of the premiership's most prolific midfielders to a holding role? I definately wouldn't give capello a new contract before the world cup kicks off.

The number of pundits who keep insisting "Gerrard and Lampard can play together in CM", in the teeth of what's always happened whenever it's been tried before, is just unreal. I hope Capello's as impervious to media chatter as he seems to be.

they (the pundits) are fucking CLUELESS, I'm sorry but they are. gerrard is given licence to go forwards with minimal defensive duties as is lampard so if they BOTH play in the center of midfield then 'SOMEONE' has to mind the shop, so;

a) one of gerrard or lampard (let's be honest here, it will be gerrard) wont have the licence to get forwards like he does at liverpool, the clueless pundits mention 'he plays in CM for liverpool' yeah, but not as a holding midfielder fuck heads, so you are losing the attacking threat staight away from one of your most important players

and

b) gerrard isn't used to holding and will get absolutely raped by a team that plays quick one/twos around him

if capello goes down this road I definately don't want him getting a new england contract.
Why are you so keen to stick the boot into Capello?
He hasn't once played Lampard and Gerrard together in midfield yet youre all frothing at the mouth about the fact the 'media' are claiming he will play it. That same media who said two weeks ago that he was 100% going to call up Hargreaves and Zamora.
Maybe we should just sack him now Spide, I mean it's not like he's one of the best coaches in world football, or that he has changed the former mates, wags, pass the coin, the big man is back attitude of the players and instilled a sense of pride and discipline into the honour of representing England again. And it's not like he oversaw one of our best qualifying campaigns ever and cruised through the group with 2 games to spare. It's not like the players respect and admire him or anything.
How about you quit fucking Reading the daily star for a couple of weeks?

I quite enjoy seeing a boot being stuck in. It makes a change from you sucking his cock while waving an England flag.
