Letall - what does FIFA taking profits have to do with south Africans not buying tickets?

Quit defending the indefensible, they've not bothered filling the stadium for the biggest tournament in the world and it's embarassing.

These are the worst two teams to ever play on grass, nevermind a world cup.

Can you let me know (as I cannot watch it) how Hamsik (the Napoli midfielder) is doing? He should one of Slovakia's best players.
he hasn't done much. Weiss has been the best player on display. It's a truly awful game of football mind you.

Lol at Soccernet's gamecast.

22' Slovakia are somewhat disjointed in attack so far.

22' And midfield. And defence.

Nice move from the Slovaks, Sestak puts it wide. Weiss looks a decent player, miles ahead of anyone else on the park, atm.

Surely they would have been better off offering up games with less attraction for a lot less? A full stadium is better than maximising profit at times.
Most definitely. I'm just pointing out that the reason that isn't happening has nothing to do with SA and everything to do with FIFA.

Why is it surprising that nobody is interested in watching New Zealand v. Slovakia?
Would any of you bother spending a lot of money watching these two teams just because it's a World Cup game?
FIFA has made it a 32 teams tournament, and with the qualifying system there always is a chance for games like this one which nobody cares about.

From what I understand from my family/friends who lived there, FIFA were selling the tickets at extremely high prices at first. When they realized the average South African cannot afford the money to buy tickets at this price, they prices dropped. They didn't drop enough for the average South African to be able to buy tickets. You forget that the country has a 20%+ unemployment rate and that many people don't earn enough to be able to put football above food/rent etc.

Glen moss, who's the sub keeperon the bench for new Zealand lives down the street from me and has banged my missus' best mate. Torres scored a hat trick past him in the confed cup last year, and gken said Nando came up to him after the game and apologised for scoring so many. Bless.

This game us fucking shite.

Nothing, but the ticket prices and purchasing process does.

I was one of 84,000 in Soccer City yesterday. Embarrassing indeed.

Would you pay 50GBP to watch today's game?

Weiss is only a kid isn't he? On Citys books ?
Yup, he went on loan to Bolton in the 2nd half of the season but didn't play too often.

Slovaks upping their game now - about time.

With hindsight - no

Mate - no need to defend the country. Ryan has a very anti-South African bias and constantly takes shot at the country. Let him be. Anyone who's followed the mockery FIFA has made with tickets (& raping the country of the profits as Ross has also mentioned in another thread) knows this has little to do with South Africa.
Yeah, I'm not defending against Ryan's rubbish, just providing some balance to the thread.

Since the start of the tournament, average attendance has been 53 019. After the same number of matches in Germany 2006, the average was 52 019.

In fairness, the only place you could realistically expect to fill a stadium with people who actually want to watch New Zealand play Slovakia, is in New Zealand or Slovakia. And even then you're relying on fairly modest populations of around 5 million people, not having something better to do.

Although I do agree that there should have been more opportunities for the local people to get a taste of the atmosphere.

Wasn't there a game at Anfield in Euro '96 (might have been something like Russia v Slovenia) where there was a crowd of about 26,000?

Beat me to it.
Loads of stadiums in first phase of Euro 96 were half full.
Id say the attendance for a crap match like that is decent.

The only disapointment so far is the poor level of football

Not undeserved.
