Woop woop it's the sound of the Gak-Police

I think big one in the summer, youthful under the radar one for Jan. Maybe 2 in the summer
Jude
Badger tits
Elliott
Henderson
Thiago
Fabinho
Another kid on the cusp of breaking through

I’m okay with that provided we invest again a year later with same again when Henderson, Fabs and Thiago go.

With 5 subs, we need this sort of depth.

City have options up top:

Haaland - Nunez
Alvarez - Bobby
Mahrez - Salah
Foden - Gakpo
Grealish - Diaz

Hybrid forward: Bernardo Silva - Carvalho
--

Although it's likely Bobby will be sold.

There's Jota, too

Lijnders, the intensity prick? My enthusiasm for this signing is suddenly starting to wane?
I'm back for Christmas and my nephew goes to school in the same year with Lijnders lad and they're both in the same football team, his dad knows Pep well and everyone thinks he's a genius to be fair. Some stupid fucking timing on releasing the book though

We got rid of Origi and Taki whom both played plenty of games last few years. We did have a need to add to the squad up front even if midfield is more pressing noe but I guess the opportunity arose and we have taken it which makes sense.
I would imagine if Jota's injury record doesn't improve then likely we will cash in the summer.

Looks we gazumped this from United or they didn't consider Gakpo worth the money. Hopefully will turn out to be a signing United regret not moving forward with.

Any chance of fixing the areas we need to fucking fix. We started tonight with Ox and ended the game with Keita... and we are buying another forward! Fuck me.

Just in case it hadn’t occurred to you - Gakpo means you likely don’t have to see Ox starting again.

Cheer up - that’s good news.

So Gakpo's signing for us, we can't buy another player who is over 21 without selling or deregistering a player. Any idea who? There's no way Naby, Ox or Melo will leave in Jan besides who would want them?

I’ve tried explaining this to you a few times.

We can also sign a home grown player over the age of 21 without the need for anyone to be de-registered.

So, for example - if we wanted to, we could add Declan Rice if we so desired.

It’s also worth pointing out that, as Enzo Fernandez isn’t 22 until January - he counts as an under 21 player this season - so he too could be signed without the need to de-list anyone.

Hell - we could even sign Bellingham, Caciedo & that Georgian you have a boner for, on top of all those, without having to de-list anyone.

Gakpo sounds very like the Diaz signing - he was on the list and if we wanted him, we either acted now or lost him to a rival.

I’m with @momoWASboss on this - we’re still signing a midfielder in Jan - and at least one other in the summer.

This is an added bonus signing as far as I’m concerned.

This feels like the Firmino replacement in attack bought six months earlier due to the Diaz setback. Agree with you that he will slot in well in the Ox role from todays game.

This is basically Pep overriding the whole technical analysis team (who have quit out of frustration) and getting his guy in even though we have two first team players in the same position already, isn't it?

Apparently we have been working on this for 3 weeks. Our control of leaks in general is much improved

It doesn’t mathes if he takes time to settle. He’s a wonderful signing.

He won player of the season last year in Holland too.

Although… I’d be tempted to move Nunez out there, because his best work, so far, seems to be coming from there - and Gakpo through the middle.

I’m sure Klopp will mix it up a bit.

I still reckon we’ll sign Enzo Fernandez by the end of the week as well.

Suggest reading the whole thread - Jan Riha definitely doesn’t rate him. Thinks he doesn’t have top-level technique or football intelligence.

Not sure what I think - haven’t seen him enough. He reminds me of Dele Alli for some reason, similar kind of lanky, graceful in its way movement and emphasis on finishing. Let’s hope Klopp and Lijnders are right about him.

Interesting read - seems this is a Lijnders signing - lots of hints there that Lijnders is behind Vs move away from the stats based approach of previous seasons and the reason why the analytics team is moving on.

Also - this guy reckons Amrabat is awful and we shouldn’t touch him with a barge pole and Matheus Nunez (one of Bluebell/Moron’s former stiffy-givers) would also have been a waste.

He reckons Marcus Thuram is the one we should have been in for.

He’s pretty scathing on Gakpo - so maybe we shouldn’t get all excited - a slightly better version of Lord Divock, perhaps?

Nah. Gakpo is more of a leader and is better suited to the PL with his build, workrate, technique and consistency.

I don't understand the signing

I understand the need for a signing in this position - I know not everyone agrees with this, but I have consistently said we need to sign a LWF in January (in addition to a CM). The question is whether Gakpo is the right player.

I don't understand the signing

By the start of next season we’ll likely have lost Mane, Firmino & Origi while adding Diaz, Nunez & Gakpo - that’s 3 “young” players in for old players.

There are question over Jota’s ability to stay fit and Salah will need replaced in a couple of seasons as well.

Importantly, I think, and @Beamrider has suggested, if we are to revamp the squad we need to be in a position to flip players and get our transfer in one up to a consistent £50m a season.

£37m and he either works out or we flip him quickly while his value is still him in 18 months time. Or we flip Jota or Nunez at the right time.

We need more sellable assets - City & Chelsea have been doing it for years.

I’m all for this - and I wouldn’t be against letting Doak or even potentially Carvalho go out on loan for 6 months.

I haven't watched much (i.e. any) of him before, and I'm a big fan of Jan Riha, as well as the stats boys, nor can I understand why we are signing another LWF (he plays a lot like Luis Diaz?), also Netherlands was pretty damp in the WC.

Buuuuuut from the Youtube highlights I've seen, I have to admit he does excite me, in a way that Darwin did not. He has great finishing ability - which is strangely lacking in our frontline, and likes to dribble, and seems versatile / smart enough to learn a new position, maybe be the new Firmino.

Value wise, it's fine. This is not an expensive deal, and he'll have enough resale value even if he busts. I don't think he'll bust bust - the combination of physical attributes and the shot he has is a guarantee of a certain level of goals, but I don't really see the need for a left-sided attacker given we have Nunez, Diaz, Jota and Carvalho there. We should have been looking for a right-sided or central attacker.

I also agree with that Jan Riha thread - I don't think he's a very high level player technically. Like I said, I can't see him being an abject failure, but I don't see him being a resounding success either.
