Winners, meh and Losers - Transfer Window 2013

A few that stick out for me

Winners:
Arsenal - Getting Ozil is tremendous. The fans are happy again, and there's less pressure on Wenger and Gazidis. Ozil makes them an even better attacking force, but the question marks with their keeper and defense will remain, and I think again, be the reason they continue without a trophy for another year.
Cardiff - Not because their players they signed are that good (Caulker, Cornelius, Medel & Odemwingie), but because those players will keep them in the premier league. That's their objective this year.
Everton - Barry & McCarthy give them a very solid midfield, and Lukaku will have the same effect on them as he did on WBA last year. Not to mention getting 27.5 million for Felliani? GOod window for them.
City - When you have 100,000,000,000 to spend, it's hard not so sign quality.
Norwich - Some really good signings here - Wolfman, Hooper, Fer, Garrido, Redmond, Elmander and Olsson ... They may be able to get into the top 8 this year.
Soton - Wanyama, Lovren and Osvaldo ... If their manager can figure things out, they may actually be do what people are predicting. I think he'll be fired mid-season mind.

Meh:
Chelsea - Signed some really good players (Willian, Shirley, Van Ginkel & Eto'o), but they need Torres or Eto'o to produce form they both may not be capable of to win the league. They really should have bought a top notch striker instead of Willian - that's what they were missing.
Liverpool - I really like our signings, but bar Ming, Toure and Sakho I don't know how much the others will improve our first team. I guess depending where we finish will be how successful or not I view this window, but I'm extremely optimistic.
Spurs - The names are huge, and the fans are optimistic. As I've said, I just think they've banked their season on Soldado and Lamela being able to win games like Bale did. I just don't know if those two can - and this could shift to winners or losers depending on their success.
WBA - they were desperate to replace what Lukaku was for them, and may have done so with the combination of Anelka, Vydra & Sessegnon. But 6 million on Anichebe? Sinclair will kick start his career (will young players ever learn with City and Chelsea?). If they can get their season going, before the pressure turns on Clarke, this will be a good window for them.

Losers:
United - Zaha may be an excellent player in the future, but it doesn't seem like he'll have much of a chance to impress this year. Felliani is a good player, but how will he solve the issues we've seen they're having in the first three games? If Rooney cannot be that quick link between the midfield + RvP, Moyes is going to be under tremendous pressure. The fact they struggled to get their #1 targets (Fabregas, Thiago etc) shows a lot about how important Fergie was ... Hopefully, the beginning of the end.
Newcastle - Unless Ben Arfa is healthy and on his game for the whole season, they will struggle not to be in the relegation battle again.
Sunderland - Sell your best player and bring in Dossena? Will Di Canio survive the season?

Undecided: Can a team that signs Carroll and Downing in one window be called 'winners'?

I fancy WBA to struggle this season, Clarke has done a great job, but they look like they've hit a wall already.

So you are extremely optimistic that our window will be a success but it's still 'meh'?

And I would never list City as winners, so much money spent and so little improvement.

I'd definitely swap us and Arsenal. After listening to idiots whine about Arsenal and Spurs all Summer, while criticising our activity, I don't think we've faired too badly by comparison, given one of them told the World and it's wife they had £70m to burn and the other had to sell their best player and one of the best in World Football to fund it. While we've kept our best player and still spent relatively big.

I'd switch the places of Spurs and Arsenal. Spurs are the transfer window winners by far, effectively getting a solid first 11 from Bale's lottery sale. Everton turn things around literally overnight by securing Lukaku and the two midfielders. The trio of Barry, McCarthy and Barkley looks good on paper.

I would create a new category for us -- winmeh.

I think Chelsea have strengthened much more than Arsenal. You can't bank the whole transfer window on one player - what if Özil is injured, are they gonna be "winners" then?

For me winners: Chelsea, City and yes, West Ham. Losers: United. The rest, including us, too early to tell.

Is it just me then who thinks City should have done a lot better with that sort of money? Their defense is a shambles at the moment.

Held on to best player: + (Suarez, and to an extent, Agger)
Failed to land main target/Strengthen intended area: - (Mkhitaryan, Willian, Costa etc, AML/AMC position)
Big earning squad players offloaded: + (Carroll, Downing)
Shrewd signings: + (loan deals for Cissokho, Moses, despite the loan fees, is less risky whereas both have a good chance of getting into the starting XI when fit)
Loans deals out: + (Suso, Robinson, Coady gets regular football to aid their progress) (Assaidi, Borini gets chance to prove/learn in English league)
Transfer outs: + (Shelvey, Spearing both unlikely to make it here in the long run)
Transfer ins: 50-50 Jury still out (Mignolet, Toure and Aspas - to an extent, has been good) (Alberto may take more than 1 season to prove his worth while the deadline day signings look good on paper)

B+ for us.

Can't say Arsenal are true winners if you ask me, Ozil barely salvaged this transfer window for them. The fee isn't an amazing deal or anything either, it's market value at best, if not a bit over. Add in that they still have a team that's paper thin in terms of goal threats and defensive depth, and there are a lot of unaddressed issues for them. Flamini is the only other player they really signed outside of Sanogo...

They're just short on bodies if you ask me.

So Arsenal getting one player they don't need makes thm winners while we address our weak spots and only are 'meh'?

So you are extremely optimistic that our window will be a success but it's still 'meh'?

It's so Skully doesn't beat me up ... I'm weak.

On a more serious note, Arsenal needed this signing for some 'fan' love. It was critical, otherwise, the fans would have turned on them immediately if results were poor.

I'd switch the places of Spurs and Arsenal. Spurs are the transfer window winners by far, effectively getting a solid first 11 from Bale's lottery sale.

If by 'solid first 11' you mean a 10 into 5 midfield at the expense of the defence and attack (I'm not seeing Soldado as a major success), then yes. All the whilst losing the one man that really made them tick. Last season they were a one man band - we'll see if they have rectified that, methinks not.

Arsenal winners? And you exclude, for me, there best signing in Flamini. Madness. Everton have done very well, as have Southampton and Norwich. Chelsea's window also has been good, as has ours. For the top six it goes like this imo.

City < Liverpool < Tottenham == Chelsea < Arsenal < United.

Mignolet, Sakho, Moses, Toure (so far) are taking the first team forward.

Aspas, Alberto, Cissokho, iLori making our squad far more impressive than last season.

Definite winners there. Whether it's enough or not is another question but with obvious progress on our teamwork and with potential improvement to come from certain players to strengthen both the first team & the squad (Countinho, Sterling, Ibe, iLori, Wisdom) I think it will be 3rd or 4th for us.

Was speaking to a City fan the other day who is pretty concerned about the state of their defence particularly in light of the fact that they've started playing quite a high line. If that's the case, Demichelis probably isn't the best man for the job.

Hmmm how exactly are we meh?

We've improved 3 positions and held onto our best player?

Arsenals defence is a shambles too.

And spurs have had a great window.

Should have qualified that by saying 'on paper'. Big money generally well spent in replacing their star man.

They need Kompany and Nastasic for that to be successful ... Demichelis is like Hodgson signing Poulsen and Konchesky.

Overall we have had a great window. Our defence is strengthened, we brought in a top keeper, we have more creative players and kept Suarez.

We're lost Carra, are top of the log without any contribution from Suarez and Henderson is coming into his own. Coutinho and Sturridge taking us forward. We're a team on the rise.

At the minute, we are happiness personified!

All summer long we have been chasing top attacking talent and because we havnt signed any it could be seen as a real 'Meh' window.
But to be quite honest with you the reason *I* have been so vociferous in demanding top attacking talent is because I 100% thought Suarez was going. Im amazed we kept him.
And with him staying i dont really have a problem with our forward options.
We play ONE up top and have Suarez, Sturridge (and Aspas if we get desperate) which leaves Coutinho, Moses, Sterling, Ibe, Alberto and potentially Henderson for the wide roles.
We positively had to strengthen at the back. It was a concern all last year and we have signed 3 x centre backs a keeper and a LB. AND kept all our existing players. Amazing in my opinion.

To still have Skrtel, Agger and Suarez here is a huge boost to me. To have Coutinho and Sturridge here since January is great because they are already part of the team. To strengthen our back line is spot on.
My only concern is CM. Hopefully Lucas can get back to his pre-injury form and Joe Allen can justify his fee. If they can I think its been a brilliant window.
We've done great work, reduced the squad age and massively reduced the wage bill.
Not to be fucked with.

Close the muthaf*cking thread.

I love you. In erotic kind of way.

A City supporting friend of mine has been really underwhelmed by Fernandinho too. Also Yaya has been a shadow of himself.

I don't know if Yaya isn't what he was, it's just his first year he was at a phenomenally high level ...

Fernandinho has looked a bit off the pace ... Can't tell if it's adaption blues, or a poor buy.

Up until 11pm last night I thought Suarez was leaving. Those Madrid rumours werent going away and I thought the Ozil money would be used to sign him.

I hate the motherfucker, but he is brilliant at playing the football.
So is Sturridge, So is Coutinho, So is Gerrard.
And my mate (you know Dave) promises me that Moses will be fucking amazing. And he doesnt say that lightly.
Im chuffed.....

Oh also we are top of the league. Unbeaten. With three clean sheets. We have the top goalscorer in the league. And Daniel Agger has stayed. And got new friends to play with.
And Sakho is a beast.

*tingly*
