[quote author=Squiggles link=topic=38974.msg1057101#msg1057101 date=1266684192]we can look to create a better balanced midfield by finding a central midfield player with a greater passing range. That isn't asking for an "Essien".

It's got to come from somewhere.

Okay, so we need someone who has considerable defensive qualities, but one that is also a good footballer in his own right. Who can we sign?

Fellaini.

I know, I know.

i dont want Mascher to leave... He is one of the few players this season to make me proud..

The joy of having such an amazing defensive midfielder is that it allows you to be more attacking and attack with larger numbers - Unfortunately Rafa plays 451 with 2 defensive midfielders... Bonkers.

This is something I agree with completely; there seems to be some consensus that Mascher is often a 'luxury' when playing against the 'weaker' teams.

Whilst not without merit, I think those situations were tailor-made to allow the fullbacks to venture deeper into enemy territory ie Neil's 'attacking fullbacks'..I simply cannot see a situation where we would not need a quality DM who'd maintain and marshall a sound defensive shield.

Its also a sad fact that the gulf between us and the weaker teams has greatly narrowed.

That can be said for all of the top teams, not just Liverpool to be fair.
