I'm sure the majority of you would pick Magic but for me it's now Kelly.
He's as solid or even better in defense than Johnson (Magic's vast experience in the position hasn't helped him much it seems. Though defending was much improved at LB for some reason), and has the speed, strength and height to deal with most situations.

Attacking-wise, Johnson can be great. But most of his wonderful attacking play comes from him cutting inside, beating his man and having a shot at goal. Which is great.
But I absolutely loved seeing Kelly bomb down the wing and putting in some great crosses this year, and now that we've got Carroll, even better.

If we were to stick with Kuyt as first choice next season, him cutting in and Kelly overlapping and putting those crosses in would be brilliant in my view.

I'd like to know the general opinion here, as I keep getting the impression that Kelly isn't as highly rated by a lot of you as I rate him.
Thoughts?

Still Johnson for me - but Kelly should get 20 games next season regardless of whether Johnson gets injured or not.

See, I'd advocate moving kelly into cb as back up, or just alongside carra. As good as kelly is there, I'd like to see him get a run out at cb

Right now - Kelly.

Next season, maybe Kelly moves inside. So, it'll be - Flanagan. Okay, it's too early to say that, but I think Flanagan will turn out as the more dependable defender than Johnson.

The first duty of the fullback is to perform his defensive duties well. Then help the RM partner in ball retention and movement. Then get deep into the other side and cross or score.

For a season and a half, I've not been convinced by Johnson's defensive nous at RB. He's better where he is now, but he still doesn't convince me that he's a good enough defender. Defensively, he's not close to Arbeloa, Finnan or Riise. And his attacking skills have actually come down a fair bit since his earlier days here. I think he's regressed since his bright start with the club, with only occasional bright displays here and there. His form has improved since moving to LB, but still not enough to convince me we can't do better there.

Kelly.
Johnson is better at LB.

Ps-Please lets not allow 'Flanno' to gain ground.

That's why i did it in quotations. I prefer flannal

I don't care where Kelly plays as long as he does. RB, CB, or LB. He needs to be an automatic starter.

Glen is nearly better at LB. He has to concentrate a bit more and it keeps him on his toes.

I like how Kelly, and the two newbies, Flanno (are we fully calling him Flanno now) and Robinson in their limited playing time bust a gut to try stop the cross coming in. Johnson has a tendency to allow the winger get his cross in. Thank god he cut his hair, I was about to totally wash my hands of him until his resurgence on the left.

Yeah i'm not a fan of calling him Flanno either.

No brainer, Johnson obviously.

Yes, a no brainer because Johnson has been excellent at right back, hasn't looked half awake, stoned, suspect, erratic, better at left back.................................................................................................

That's you against the rest of the forum again, the rest of the forum that didn't want Kenny as manager, while you were the sole poster on the interweb who did. In some parallel universe, sometime.

I fail to understand why you have to get so personal and aggressive. It's just my opinion, everyone has one. Not my fault I'm a independent thinker, I was born this way. Some are sheep and some are shepherds.

I prefer Kelly, but he is injury prone. I think Kelly will be moved into the middle in the medium term which will enable us to keep both happy.

I'm going with Magic. Kelly will improve and get better. By end of next season he'll be a shoe in for RB

Kelly with Johnson at LB is our strongest deployment of available resources. When they're available.

Why is it a no brainer?

Before he got injured Kelly was by far our best player on the pitch in a number of games

There's no doubting Johnson's qualities as a footballer, parts of his game are world-class - but our back four looks far more settled with Kelly in there, and this fact has to take priority.

Johnson hasn't been poor by any means, however he now has plenty of work to do to ensure his future as Liverpool FC. Who would have thought that when we signed him for £19M?

If we're looking to raise funds, I'd argue that Glen is the most expendable asset we have.
