Who's gonna surprise us all for the right reasons next season?

After failing to impress so far, which lesser regarded player (assuming they're still here) will turn on the magic next season?

I'm going for a controversial choice of Mr. Degen 😉

I think between Babel and Voronin they could save us some money on a back up striker, which we could then spend else where.

edit: That should be I HOPE actually, though I'm pretty content with the Crow.

I voted for Voronin because I think he will score goals.
He gets some amount of stick in here for no major reason, that I can see anyway.
He's had a good season in Germany, found the net a few times so his confidence should be high.

When he scored for us there always seemed to be a warm reaction from the other players towards him, so I take it from that he is a decent lad. Torres seems to like him. Get him back, train him hard, stick him in the team for pre-season and see what where we are with him.

I know this is probably silly but i'd go for Ryan Babel, for some reason I really want him to do well. I know he can do it, he's a very talented player, I have faith.

I've voted voronin because I think if he is played up front if torres gets injured then he will score a few.

Big andrei for me. He was never that bad, just missed some chamber which h'll put down to confidence issues

Perhaps Riera will step up a level.

I thought the same Wilko

I voted for "None" because we all kinda know what the players are capable of or what their potential is.

The chances of one of them exceeding that to the point of taking us aback - like Lucas or Babel suddenly exploding into a dominant world class talent - seems almost impossible.

to be honest I think anyone is capable of stepping up a gear given the right motivation and will power. for instance I thought yossi was fucking shit in the first half of the season and then stepped up a gear in the run in. what happened to change that? he changed a crutial game took confidence from it and ended the season strongly. if he can do it so can others.

The abuse of Voronin was uncalled-for (the ponytail probably didn't help) but the criticism of his performances wasn't. He's an intelligent player with some ability, but he's had his chance already and proved then that he's far too slow to play up front in the Prem, where too many games simply pass him by. The Bundesliga doesn't make the same level of demand on a player, and the club he played for over there hasn't exactly beaten a path to our door to sign him permanently either.

One definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again in the hope that somehow the result will be different "next time". I'm surprised how many on here are willing to do that with Voronin. He needs to move on, for his own sake as well as ours.

Probably none of them, but I selected Babel just because I think he's got the most potential - grasping at straws, though.

Logically Lucas will have the best chance, and I reckon some will be surprised by sheer competence.

I actually think Voronin could have had a part to play in those park the bus games at Anfield, where guile rather than pace was needed to unlock a congested final third. Away from home he shouldn't be an option.

However, I'm voting for 'Another', as I think Jay Spearing will displace Lucas as midfield cover during the season, and I think he'll take his chance well. He's a clever player with a great range of passing, and I really hope he gets his chance.

They are all capable of stepping up a gear but a lot depends on what chances they will get and what other changes we see in the squad.

Degen is the least likely because he is least likely to get games. As long as Johnson stays fit and doesn't turn into a complete disaster then I can't see when Degen would get a chance.

If Voronin does stay (I'm not desperate for him to do so) and we don't buy another striker he will have a part to play for sure. His record in his 1st season wasn't all that bad and its possible he could weigh in with some important goals.

I doubt Dossena will stay but if he does he probably will get some chances (any left back at the same club as Aurelio would have to fancy their chances) and he might surprise us a bit. He can't be that bad and players often do need a full season and a decent pre-season in a new league before they get going.

With Lucas and Babel much will depend on what else happens in the midfield. If we have the same line up then they will only be filling in and I can't see them improving a great deal. With a run of games they might grow in confidence and make more of an impact but right now I can't see where those runs of games will come from

I voted for Lucas as I think he will get plenty of opportunities and I think he showed aenough at the end of the season that he does have something to offer.

A bit off topic but I would like to point out that I think Agger will have a stand out season (possibly player of the year for us) and show the rest of the world just how good he is.

It's amazing how many of us still can't let the hope for Ryan Babel go.

Look who he's up against.

In this context voting for Babel doesn't make anyone over-confident or deluded.

My vote goes to El Zhar. Saw some glimpses of what he can do last season and i really think/hope he'll improve on that this season by scoring a few goals. He made the difference in some tight games at the start of the season.
