West Ham Match Thread - Fa Cup

I'm rather surprised by the comments on Teix. Yeah he was on the ground a fair bit but didn't he actually pick up free kicks for a lot of those? Besides, he was playing a lot with two guys on him. It's the same thing that happens when we trap opponents - notice they'll usually just collapse in a heap because knocks happen or they're trying to earn a free kick from a trap.

He was basically our only creative outlet in midfield. I'd give him some slack but he needs to do more in order to stay.

How many were West Ham missing?

The B team did pretty well all things considered. They were the better side.

Benteke though. Every game I hope that this will be the day he finally steps up and every time I reach the end of the game kinda hating him.

I can't believe we've managed to waste 30M plus so badly again. It's sickening.

I think he lacks football intelligence.

Put sterling's footballing brain in that body & you'd have a superstar.

Aye there's certainly not much great decision making going on there, but then that cold be lack of experience. Some top players no doubt just have an innate ability to think like a top player, but others can no doubt learn it, but probably to a lesser degree.

And he played on the wing. Since when is Teixeira a winger?

Quite. And I think he suffers the same fate as Coutinho when he has someone like Benteke playing infront of him. No runs to search out, exasperated by the fact there was also no wide player either to give him an outlet, because he was the wide player!

I have to say, I'm really impressed with both Brannagan and Stewart, they're both mobile, industrious and can play a fair bit too. Caulker and Lovren were both alot more aggressive and composed than what we've witnessed lately too, despite the odd mishap.

Actually we had 3 intelligent midfield passers of the ball in the side: Brannagan, Teixeira and Allen. That's why even with Benteke up front (who usually sucks up creativity from the team) this game was infinitely more watchable than the other night vs Stoke. Unfortunately we couldn't turn out chances into goals. Put Firmino and Origi/Sturridge up front instead of Ibe and Benteke and this is a good team.

The ref was almost contemptuous of him. If he hadn't collapsed all the time he would have got several more free kicks. I thought he was embarrassing, and I've been a fan of his for ages.

I don't think Stewart has a hope in hell of progressing here. He's been drifting for ages. Brannagan, however, is class and ought to become a fixture in the squad.

Yeah, Stewart is running out of time fast and looks a league below or so.

Brannagan, on the other hand, has intelligence to spare.

Today, Stewart looked very much like he belongs at this level. Tenacious, physical, made good decisions – only his shooting was wayward. The question is whether this is a one-off or he can sustain this level.

Brannagan has been excellent in every game he started this season. It's interesting that post-match Klopp didn't mention him alongside other youngsters who did well (Smith, Stewart, Ojo, even Sinclair). I read it as Brannagan is already in a different status to the rest of the youngsters – what's good for them is already par for the course for him.

Stewart did play well. Got around the pitch and put his foot in. I'm not sure if he's good enough on the ball to make it at the top level though.

Disappointing result because we had created enough good opportunities to win the game comfortably.

Mign with a usual really poor decision - lucky to get away with it. An extension ... Yikes.
Thought the back 4 were very solid -
Stewart had his best game a I thought, bar shooting.
Barrangan was good.
Allen is really playing well. I think he's being shortchanged here by not seeing more minutes in the premier league.
Ibe - worried about him, but he's young and there's time.
Teix - I think he's good a lot going for him BUT if he's not getting premier leauge minutes by now, he won't be doing it with us. Should have scored a goal tonight.
Benteke - I hope we can get 20-25 million in the summer. Watching him closely makes you realize he's lacking intelligence and instinct to be a top class striker. I wonder if this was a TC or Rodgers' signing - but yet another massive failure in the big transfer sweepstakes ...

Definitely Rodgers – he also defended him in his recent Sky interview.
