We're signing Van Dijk yet again

I don't know what Moron is on about, we're definitely not "bottling out." That said, I can see City winning that battle, they have a triple advantage in unlimited money, a guaranteed EPL title at the end of the season and a better relationship with Southampton. Our only potential trump card is VVD's supposed preference to join us, but things could change.

Independent.ie has us leading the chase whereas independent.co.uk has City winning the battle.

Are the stores by the same journo ? - if so maybe he/she has a split personality disorder and we should not be looking too much into that.

JJ. I admire you sticking to your stance that he wants to come to us but don’t think it’s gonna happen. He’s gonna go there. You’ve only been wrong about two things this year btw. This and brexit. Still love ya though [emoji5]

@Judge Jules - to be honest I don't really care if we get him or not - but it bothers me that we have been the strongest link to getting him, and then to hear rumours or whatever - that the player decides to opt for City is a bit of a kick in the face. Very hurtful, this - feel a bit let down. Don't you ?

In fairness club loyalty aside he'd be an idiot to choose us over City if they come calling.

Better team, better football, better defence, better tactics, better coach, guaranteed silverware and more money.

It's not even a remotely difficult choice for him

I think we are going to get him. If we did not have a chance, we would have backed off by now. My guess is Klopp is willing to compete all the way with City for this signing. The commitment we have displayed must mean something to Van Dijk.

Let's not kid ourselves, it's not like Van Dijk is a fan. Man C are offering a league title, he'd be stupid not to take it.

I'm not against signing him but we shouldn't compete if it's 70 mill they want. I mean he's good, but not 'that' good.

He is ‘THAT’ good. There is a reason the big boys are sniffing around and willing to make him the most expensive defender in history.

I am not arguing the merits of that decision. I am just stating my guess that most likely we will get him.

Let's hope so, but it's 70 mill, jeesh...

It's a lot, but if we're trying to compete with City and United for major titles, we can't always shop from the bargain bin. City have bought 2 full-backs for £50M each this summer – a top CB is a more valuable part of the team. Even if we buy VVD for an unthinkable £100M, our overall spending on defenders will be far, far below what they've spent in the last few years:

Matip – free
Lovren – £20M
Klavan – £4M
Gomez – £3.5M
Clyne – £12M
Robertson – £8M
Moreno – £12M
Total: £59.5M, less than Danilo and Mangala combined.

I'm not against spending but let's not be stupid about it. In today's market Van Dijk may be worth 70 but I don't believe for second that there aren't any other options out there. We also need a DM. Best case scenario for me this January is a CB and DM. Spend 70 mill combined on them.

What I like about Van Dijk is that he comes with the premiership proven stamp.
But so does Lacelles at Newcastle and he's like 4 years younger. Not as good atm, but tons of potential.
De Vrij at Lazio is not too shabby either.
At DM, not too sure but Monaco's Fabinho can play there and Napoli's Diawara is very raw but talented.

WTF does the money mean to us ? If it's £50m it's OK but another 10 or 20 and we, the fans, start bleating ? If LFC are happy to pay it then I really don't give a shit.

And it's not just for VVD, it's for any top CB, I don't have a preference. Just pay it. I'd rather we overpaid, and had a bloody good CB in our defence, than not and regret it at our leisure. If it doesn't work out .. well that's the risk all clubs take and there have been many high profile failures from Veron to Falcao and all the rest.

Potential ? FFS we should be way beyond buying 'potential' for our first team by now. Buy only proven players for the first team.

I was one who suggested Maguire in the summer, most of you scoffed at it. Keane is also getting better at the bitters.. Annoyingly.

One we should be keeping an eye on is Alfie Mawson. Yes he didnt play great yesterday, but no one did for the swans.

Keane looks better because Allardyce has them defending deep like Burnley, hardly being up the pitch at all.
If you put Keane in our set up, he'll look what he is, average and limited.

Maguire is to slow and not good enough either.

Maguire is not slow. He's tall and awkward. But not slow. I'd wager he's as quick as VvD
