We're signing Van Dijk yet again

The guy has qualities we don't already have in defence that's why I'm ok with signing him.

He's massive, strong and good in the air. Also aside from that last injury he has barely missed any games in career which means he'll be there to build a defence around.

He may be many things but I'm finding it hard to believe he will have a injury free career.....have you seen the size of him?

£70m is a lot of money, and knowing you also have weak links between the post seems haphazard to put all your eggs in one basket, if you are just buying one player.

Let's just spend big money on van dijk and koulibaly. Would be worth it. Ditch Lovren and matip for those 2 and done.
Koulibaly looks like another Lovrén or Sakho, good in a defensively set team. How will be do with the likes of Can, Henderson, Wijbaldum and Milner, though?

In saying that, van Dijk isn't that bad. The fee just seems utterly mad.

So now we can't sign this guy coz he is going to City. Well at least there will not be any pain if he did join us and then Barca/Madrid decided to put in a bid for him end of next season. Saves us the agony and pain I guess. Best wishes to him and besides 60-70M was always out of our range anyway.

Van Dijk hasn't travelled with the Southampton team to face the Spurs today. Looks all but certain that he will be sold in the upcoming transfer window.

So we have bottled out despite all the talk of us going in for him big...bottling out ... just like our defense !!

Why are you assuming a City deal is done when even the BBC report makes it clear that it isn't?

And sorry but the bit about "bottling out" really is nonsense. To be still in for the guy after all the flak we've taken is the mirror opposite of "bottling out".

@Judge Jules - to be honest I don't really care if we get him or not - but it bothers me that we have been the strongest link to getting him, and then to hear rumours or whatever - that the player decides to opt for City is a bit of a kick in the face. Very hurtful, this - feel a bit let down. Don't you ?

First of all he hasn't gone there yet - this is just media rumour. If he eventually does go there, I won't feel hurt - disappointed, yes, but in our incompetence last summer rather than in the player himself, who has done his darnedest up till now to get a move to LFC.

The battle to sign Virgil van Dijk is set to be one of the dominant stories of the January transfer window and as was the case last summer, Southampton will have the final verdict on the future of their unsettled Dutch centre-back.

The Independent.ie story last Saturday revealing that Southampton are in negotiations with Liverpool over Van Dijk fired the starting gun on what the south coach club will hope becomes a bidding war between the Anfield club, Manchester City and other clubs for a player who is regarded as the prize catch of next month’s transfer scramble.
Defenders of Van Dijk undoubted quality have rarely been available for mid-season transfers in recent years, with his eligibility to play in the later stages of the Champions League making his signature all the more valuable for clubs eager to spend big in a bid to take them to the next level.

With that backdrop in mind, Southampton officials are fully aware that they are in the driving seat in these lucrative negotiations and while we revealed that Liverpool have lodged a bid that is close to their valuation of the player, Saints can now wait to see whether City, Chelsea or any other club can match or better that offer. Van Dijk’s eagerness to join Liverpool will work to the advantage of the Anfield club, but the player may not have the final say in his next career move as Southampton will accept the offer that best suits them for a player they remain reluctant to sell.

With three and a half years left on his contract with Saints, the club’s decision to consider offers for a player they resolutely refused to do business on last summer is consistent with the clubs policy laid out throughout 2017. They were keen to make a statement that they would not be bullied into a deal on Van Dijk in last summer’s transfer window and despite endless streams of speculation to the contrary, the held firm and refused to consider any offers to sell a player even after he handed in a transfer request.

Southampton felt they had to make a stands to keep all their best players last summer after several years of selling their star names and hoped bing Van Dijk would reengage with the club’s ambitions and change his stance on his future. As we reported on Independent.ie throughout last summer, Southampton were always expecting to review that position in January if Van Dijk continued to agitate for a move and while annoyance remains over Liverpool’s unsolicited approach for the player, they will now consider a deal with the Anfield club for their top target.

Manchester City have also held talks with Southampton over signing Van Dijk, but Liverpool had the biggest offer on the table in the run up to Christmas Day and the player remains keen to move to Anfield.

I don't know what Moron is on about, we're definitely not "bottling out." That said, I can see City winning that battle, they have a triple advantage in unlimited money, a guaranteed EPL title at the end of the season and a better relationship with Southampton. Our only potential trump card is VVD's supposed preference to join us, but things could change.

The player always has the final say on where he going. Whether it's the highest bid or not. A club can't sell a player without his acquiescence.

Aye, that be true. I recall Baros feclining a higher fee move to go to Aston Villa. And didn't Chelsea offer more. yet Oxlade-Chamberlain came to Liverpool?
