We're signing Van Dijk yet again

Besides, Gomez and Clyne can both play at LB, Trent probably too – that's not even taking Milner into account. There are lots of options at FB at the moment.

Whereas now that we switched to the system with 2 sitting midfielders, that midfield looks awfully thin – with Hendo injured we are now down to just Gini, Can and Milner for the busy festive period. Even when everyone is fit, Hendo can only play 1 game a week to minimize the risk of inflammation in his heel, Milner doesn't have the energy any more for 2 games per week, Can nowadays turns up only whenever he feels like it... so basically Gini is the most consistent and physically durable midfielder we have. If Can leaves, I recon we need at least one more in addition to Keita, just to account for aging of Milner and Hendo's condition.
I'm never a fan of playing players out of position. Sure Clyne, Gomez and Trent could do a 'job' at LB but it'd be negative and would stop the whipping balls in from the left.

Beyond Robbo, I trust Moreno as much as I trust Ming to have an error free game. Milly probably hasnt got the legs for LB anymore.

Hence why I personally would like another.

By your logic Trent could also play CM (his u18 position).

I think it’s pretty hard to justify spending 60-70m on a CB who will turn 27 in six months.

He’d have to not only be our version of Kompany (prior to injuries) but also form part of a team that re-establishes us to be worthwhile.

I think he has that potential.
We need a leader and a powerful player at he back and I think he’s it.

Yeah, its difficult to accept that fee.
Lets hope its a lot more performance based structured then straight jo cash deal.

This deal wouldve been done last summer if our silly media team hadnt let it out the bag too early....

Its obvious it was gonna be done in January, with him saying he wants to play for us what else was gonna happen.

Shame we didnt go for Pickford in the summer....

It would be quite the coup, if he signs for us rather than city. We desperately need some more quality in defence.

I think this signing will be a turning point in Klopp's reign.

Have City put in a bid ?

Have we put in a bid? It seems (from reports?) the player has made it clear he wants to sign for us rather than city so they won't bid unless they think think they get him.

Well, yeah.

If it works out as he hopes, the criticism and issues in defence will quieten down.

If it doesn't, huge damage to his reputation.

He’s not Woland. He’d be a massive upgrade for us.

In truth even average but consistent players like Jon Evans or Harry Maguire will improve us. I have never seen defenders with as many fuck-ups as ours. It doesn't matter how well they play, you know there is always going to be a fuck-up round the corner. Klavan's recent run is the longest I remember for a long time, for that alone he will be first choice even if he is so average.

VVD doesn't need to be a world beater, if he can stay consistent for the entire season I'll pay the price.

Compare us to the best defences in the league (City, United, Spurs, Chelsea).

Compare the players.

Their first CB (save United), DM and GKs are all far better than ours.

I'd say we actually have comparable quality at LB, RB and the 2nd CB.

Signing VVD will solve 1 of 3 problems. I think he's on the same level at Alderweired, Jones, Koscielny and Otamendi/Kompany.

I'd say Lovren/Matip are on the same level as Smalling, Cahill, Stones.

But where we are FAR, FAR, behind them in quality is GK and DM. Keita being 2 men will help in DM a bit, but we'd be far better off getting someone to help him. The way Demme sits next to him at RBL, or the way Matic sits beside Pogba. We need FAR better than Henderson/Can.

Replacing Ming goes without saying. Oblak needs to be number 1 target. How good is Donnarumma? I know he just let in a howler yesterday but I haven't watched him enough to know if that's just poor form or poor class.

Let’s face facts, what’s the point? He’s this year’s Lovren for 40M extra. I’d sooner sign someone I’ve never heard of and pretend they’re good for a bit.

Bah.

I‘m about the same as Lovren.

And I‘m a 16 stone 40 year old former ice hockey player.

So you think he’s about the same as Lovren. Wow.

Larry makes a valid point. The defender maybe good only because he has a protective set of players in front of him, and could be the very reason why Lovren looked so good. Now you take away that protective wall - is he as effective ? this season he has not been playing at the same standard - is that because the coach he has is less defensive than the previous one ? - we could not register a fucking goal against them last season, because they mostly played with a double decker bus in front of their defense. Take our defenders - and stick them in that type of setup - they would look world class.

All defenders make mistakes - that's how games are lost.

Have you ever made a career choice based on who you’d work with rather than the size of corporations or pay packet? I have, so I understand VVD’s decision if that indeed is the case.

Footballers want to win honours and play for the best and most successful coaches in the world.

Klopp great that he is won't be able to compete with City if they come calling

Lovren was touted as the answer to all our prayers when we were after him

I went back and read the thread from when we were chasing him. Lots of hilarious comments the authors of which will remain unnamed. The type of comment made is best illustrated by Mark1975's sensible post:

so all this "Lovren-Sakho the dream partnership" crap is just theoretical really, until they actually play together no one knows whether they will forge a formidable partnership, or be an even worse combination than the latest one.
