I don't know why people think they can just redefine the term 'world class' from its common usage to something that suits their prejudice. I've never once, ever, heard it used to mean something like 'best in the world in his position'. It's virtually always used to mean something like 'among the best players in the world and able to compete at the highest level'. That's how it's used, so that's what it means. You don't just get to decide an arbitrary meaning for a term.

Suarez is world class. So is Ibrahimovic. And Cavani, and Neymar, and Falcao, and Costa, and Aguero, and probably a few others I'm forgetting.

I don't think that's a good system for determining who is world class.

It simply leads to people loading up a team with attacking players, like Whirly has done above and Garth Crooks does all the time for his team of the week. Even when that's not the case, the formation and style you pick will influence how many slots are available for each type of player and that's before you arrive at the problem of players who can be broadly cast as playing in the same position actually performing vastly different roles and having vastly different skills.

This is a serious post on a serious issue.

That's also a question of style rather than grammar as most people would take a pause before the parenthesis. 😉
