MANCHESTER CITY are lining up a £15million bid for Gary Cahill. The Bolton defender has been a long-term target for a number of top clubs including Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal.
But City believe they can capitalise on boss Owen Coyle's interest in Shaun Wright- Phillips last January by using him as a makeweight in the deal.
Cahill, 25, has a year left on his contract from this summer and is believed to have a £15m release clause in the agreement.
Bolton are resigned to losing their star player and may decide to do business with City as it would mean they could get Wright-Phillips for no outlay.
The Eastlands hierarchy want the former England international, who will be 30 in October, off the wage bill because his contract is worth £80,000 a week.
City seem keen to buy British this summer and still plan to follow up their interest in Arsenal's Jack Wilshere, but Cahill will solve problems in defence.
They fear Kolo Toure will miss next season if, as expected, he is hit with a two-year ban for failing a drugs test in March.
That means Roberto Mancini, or whoever is in charge next season, will be without a natural defensive partner for Vincent Kompany.
The City boss is unconvinced by Joleon Lescott and his only other option is to move Jerome Boateng to centre-back, but the German international has suffered with injuries this season.
