We are obviously in for a tough season

The point is - He should be trying to motivate his team. Many believe that we had and have a good first team, and that it was the testy relationship that Rafa had with the management, staff, and the squad that eventually resulted in loss of motivation and form.

But he is saying things like the above and - "we are crap, we can't be expecting to win against such esteemed opponents as Birmingham and we weren't" (Ok i took a few liberties in exaggerating that). How in the name of Christ is that supposed to raise the morale?

He should either shut-up or say something positive. Saying things like this to defend and cover some wrong decisions he has made in team selection and tactics is not helping anyone.

He needs time, and everyone recognizes that. There is no need to be defending himself at this point in time.

A standard - "we are working on improving the results" or something along those line would be decent PR standpoint now.

What i fear most is that Roy Hodgson may mean well, but inadvertently end up bringing irrecoverable mid-table mentality into our club. It has taken City more than the cost of building a brand new stadium to recover from that.

For fucks sake - just shut up.

By what parameter are we considered a top team?

Our empty trophy cabinet?
Our fantastic 7th position last season?
Our CL status?
Our finances?
Our world class manager?

It's time Liverpool fans woke up and stopped living in the past. We havent won the league for 20 years yet still jizz at the thought of Dalglish and Rush banging them in like it's still 1986.
8th position once is the worst league positin we have had for 50 years. In the last 5 years we have played 2 CL finals and 3 CL semifinals. In the last decade we have lifted 2 European trophies, and participated in the semis five or six times.

We have more players that participated in the world cup than any other british team, second in Europe.

We are the best replica selling team by all teams using Adidas (incl Real Madrid)

By which parameters are we not supposed to be a top team?

By the parameters that our squad is filled with rubbish and we're broke.

By the parameters that every year our best player deserts us like a Titanic rat.

That's not Roy's fault; but he has to work with what he has as best he can.

He hasnt yet.

We've been one of the four best teams for the last decade, on a very regular basis, so we clearly have been a top team, albeit not at the top of the top. The past people might be living in might be a couple years ago, when we were a team in resurgance, and a regular threat in Europe, so not quite 1986.

No one went into this season thinking we'd win the league. Few thought we'd get fourth. It's not as if expectations haven't changed. It's that we're worried about where the bottom is. We're worried that even those very modest -- incredibly depressing expectations, which are beneath us as a club, and chiefly the result of gross financial mismanagement -- will not be met. Hodgson wants us to set the bar as low as possible for him, which is fucking sad.

Sorry but how the fuck does that make us a top team?

History alone?

Would you buy a stock in a company that was the market leader 20 years ago: that doesn't have cash, a shaky management, decling revenues, increasing debts?

Today is what matters - not 5 years ago.

Probably, but the top manager left us as a mid-table team.

Let's not underestmate the difficulty of the job facing HOdgson, even if he has begun badly.

2 seasons ago we were a poor ref decision from winning the league. How close do you want it? Wednesday night? Ok, judged by wednesday night we were not a top team. I will give you that one.

Would you buy a stock in an entertainment company that has probably the second or third largest customer/fan base at a cut price, when its performance is down?

The stickiness factor in football remains. Leeds United for all their troubles, still get the crowd in for the games.

It depends how you spin this shite...

we're a mess of a club that finished 7th last year. We're nowhere near being a top team and won't be for years.

Mass panic session on the 6CM forum is not going to help or destroy anyone. It will be funny though.....So there is no harm in us carrying on in this trend. Let the Panic begin.

I just hope the management team does not panic. Hodgson's appointment seems more and more like a Panic decision.

I think we've got a better squad than people give us credit for, but Chelsea and City in particular have enough quality in the ranks to step in when the best players are out. We don't really have that.

Roy has to get his head out of his hands and start taking charge of things a lot more, granted, he needs to get to grips with the squad, work out what's best and what's missing. Personally I'd promote one of the younger lads to the flanks and take it from there. People say our midfield is shit, it still contains Gerrard and Meireles, if we get the balance right out wide things could look a lot better.

We always seem to be short 'somewhere' don't we? Now I feel we need a commanding centre back and a quality winger, the rest I can live with.

Ok i came in to this thread all angry and ready to chew my monitor *alive*...

For some reason, i can't be bothered.

We can only fucking laugh at ourselve...what else can we do?

Go Roy go......do your best.

If you read the whole paragraph it is a little more alarming:

"There are going to be lots of other games this season where people will be expecting us to win and we don't and there will be games where people maybe don't expect us to do very well and we do well - that is the nature of football.

Is it me or does that say we will enter some games not expecting to do well?

I know we are not the force we once were but I've always thought our best 11 were a match for anyone home or away.

He's just saying that's the way it goes, we'll get slated when we get beat and we'll get written off prior to some games and prove people wrong. It IS the nature of the game and the press that goes with it.

That full quote actually puts a fairer context on what he's said.

yes, if by 'fair' you mean 'completely unbalanced' and 'where we are now' you mean 'rafa benitez'.

If by 'unbalanced' we're talking about ignoring the financial mismanagement at the club, then yes.

But Rafa's mistakes are encapsulated perfectly.

What ref decision cost us the league? And didn't we lose it by 4 points, hence we were 2 games behind not one?
No no. Wake up man.

If Ronaldo had been injured we would have won it.

So really, yes we won the league 2 seasons ago - cause Ronaldo never got injured and Torres was.

Let's write a complaint to the FA.

to be fair i don't think there's too much wrong with what he's saying, basically that football's unpredictable and luck evens itself out, it's just that he's so verbiose that you can chop up little bits of his sentences and make them look bad out of context. or something.

basically i think part of the problem is that he's that fond of the sound of his own voice that, inevtiably, eventually, he's going to start talking bollocks. he's like stephen fry in that respect.
