Wayne Rooney

He's consistently failed on the international stage and went 3 whole years recently without a goal for England. Let's wait until he's banging them in against top countries in the World Cup for once rather than against the likes of Portsmouth and Bolton before we hand out the "world-class" stuff. So far his career suggests he's a flat-track bully and he usually goes missing against top opposition. His poor performances against top clubs/countries far outnumber his good performances. Someone described him as "more workhorse than wizard" and that sums him up nicely for me

Worst Post Of The Day

Very well done.

And to think so many people on here thought he wasn’t going to be world class. I remember having this argument with plenty about 12-18 months ago.

Oh dear.

What a player.

So errr, he goes missing against top quality opposition? Goals against Arsenal, Spurs, Man City (more than once) in the league. He hasn’t scored against us or Chelsea yet, but he’s only played each team away from home, and I cant recall a chance being created for him at Anfield.

Where are the Mancs in the league this year? And how exactly are they where they are? Because I can only name one player for them who has played consistently well all season and CARRIED them. We all go on about how Gerrard carried us in 2004, well Rooney is doing the same for them now. Don’t let your bias get in the way of how good a player he is.

But I suppose im just being daft, ive worked out who you are so I don’t expect you to agree with me. Not that I like praising Mancs of course. I can just be un-biased enough to call it when I see a world class player.

24 Prem games this season, 21 goals.

Pretty good.

We'll just write off all goals that are scored against the likes of Blackburn/Portsmouth/Sunderland in future then ok.

How have we got on against those 3 this season again?

By the way, Torres scored 3 against Hull at home so should be writing those goals off?

Got it! Thanks Luv.

I'd love to be able to say Rooney is shit but sadly he's excellent, and he doesn't seem like as much of a twat as many other players are.
Whoever said signing him was a masterstroke by Ferguson though - not sure if I'd go that far. Everyone knew how good he was and everyone wanted him (apart from stupid people and they don't tend to manage Premier League football clubs)

Having said that there is something to be said about how young players progress at United. I wonder what would have happened had Rooney signed for us.

With his workrate and team approach he'd have been played on the left or on the right consistently due to the options it provided and the fact he'd keep the fullback protected.

To be fair - that's pretty much exactly how Fergie handled him and it hasn't worked out too badly. I don't think Rooney is a good example if you want to declare that we're not too good at handling young talent - there are much better examples out there.

Fuck me, I didnt know that.

I started a thread about him this season questioning his ability to be the leagues top goal scorer. To fill Ronaldo's shoes. At the time he had punished the whipping boys but his performances in the last couple of months have been incredible. He is a top player, as good as there is in the position right now. At only 24 he may be the reason United could continue winning league titles.

He's quite comfortably the best player in the world right now.
[/quote]

Let's not go silly.

He's certainly top class but he's a little short of the 'best in world' tag. Messi and Ronaldo would still be ahead and I'd imagine a couple of others would have claims too.

Nope for me he is.

He works harder for the team, scores similar amount of goals. Some of his through balls are Zidane-esque. He's a joy to watch if you can put aside the team he's playing for.

He's brilliant and the one premiership player I'd love to have in our team.

Imagine Gerrard, Rooney and Torres as an attacking trio.
