Actually he was awesome last year for WHU too. And my friend watched him at Hoffenheim and thought he would be very good in the PL; told me so when the WH transfer went through. So if he can scout him than we should have been able to.
Rather like Oncy, I look at Man City (and god knows some other team will be bought by a squizziollaire this season) and I think, naaah, it's not gonna happen for us again no matter what we do.
Kenny isn't helping himself but it's not really his fault. The hard part is that every time I see him there on the touchline it's a very sort of raw reminder of what once was.

Certainly as far as Carroll's concerned. I don't imagine for one second that we'd have bought him if Torres hadn't left. Nor do I imagine we'd have spent so much on him if the Torres transfer hadn't taken place so late into the window.
Not so sure about Downing. We'd been crying out for a consistent LM/LW for ages and I'd have thought that might well have been a priority for Kenny.

Going from memory here but I'm pretty sure Torres told the club he was off on the 18th or 19th of the month. We had 11/12 days to select a target and go after him. Also, we have a network of scouts working all the time for the club so to suggest we *had* to pay £35mil for him due to timing is off the mark JJ.
Torres handed in a transfer request on 28th January. Spurs had a 30m bid for carroll rejected on the 15th.
So....

Christ ... so close to having saved 35M. Bloody Spurs.

Ba was very good for the Hammers Sunny. £ for £ hugely better value than Carroll.

Don't deny that mate all I'm saying is people would have been WTF if we'd signed him

I would have agreed with JJ on that until the interview Henry did with Conn. How they're being perceived by the fans is clearly an issue for them, which is clever in one way but stupid in another.

It's also worth considering that on the back of what happened with G&H, they're right to be conscious about it.
Being conscious of it is not the same as being dictated to by it. The first, as you say, is fine. The second isn't, and I don't believe for one minute that FSG would fall into that category.

We should sign darren bent.
he's exactly what we need. We have no one who can just score, even if they're having a shit game

If we'd have signed Ba in January people would have been spitting feathers. Now he's in a purple patch of form you think it would have been a wise move? That's convenient. I dont think signing Carroll was a bad move, signing him for 35 mil was though
Only RVP and Rooney have scored more Premiership goals than him in the past year. (from the GUardian Podcast, may or may not be true)

LOL at the Guardian. It may be true Ross but loads of people would have been mightily pissed off. Of course loads may claim now that they'd have been well up for it.

I said I wanted him at some stage, but I'm not sure if it was January or not. Summer was more likely.
But yeah people would have been going mental had we spunked £9m on a striker with only half a season's worth of goalscoring form in the Premiership and injury issues.
