From some site in an interview with him ine year ago:

Kabak: "My personal aim is to become a top defender in maybe two or three years, like Virgil van Dijk. He's my idol, I really like him."

bundesliga.com: What is it about Virgil van Dijk that you admire?

Kabak: "As a footballer? I like his style and how he plays, so I can say he's my football idol."

Merson is surprised we signed him cause Schalke have won one league game this season...

Why have Schalke let him go mid-season?

This is the bit I don't get at all, you would think a team in such a bad situation would want to hold onto him.

Yeah, but only players who are 6'2" or above are real defenders.

funny but not true - one of the best defenders I have seen in the PL era was that Chelsea defender that played under Jose in his first season - named Ricardo Carvalho - he was just 6' - so as long as our new boys can head well, can read the game well, have a bit of pace we should be fine.

.

I knew this was going to happen. It's the football equivalent of the madonna/whore complex. Those good players who are at other clubs can still be admired whilst longing for them, but if one comes to your club, you think, 'Why the hell have they come here? There must be something wrong with them! They DISGUST me!!!'

They signed Mustafi didn't they? They know nothing about football then.

How the fuck does Merson get any air time?

By the same logic, we should never have signed Andy Robertson either.

Absolute shit cunt Merson is.

Fans were saying they couldn't dream of getting £18m if they get relegated, which is looking likely, and they're in a financial mess as it is.

Yep - makes sense. They must think they're a dead cert to go down and so need to maximise his sale in the summer as likely their best asset

He's a bit fragile is Merse. They are probably thinking it's a duty of care keeping him employed while he's in and out of rehab for various things.

And yes, he isn't the brightest. We all know that.

I think the only reason Merson wasn't kicked out with the others was that Sky feared he'd go on a booze and betting descent into oblivion and they'd get blamed. So he's basically assured of a job no matter how bad he is at it.

And he hates us, so anything that gives him air time to be negative about Liverpool is a bonus for him, even though two days ago he'd never heard of Kabak.

I swear the only reason they got Thomo was because of how blatantly anti Liverpool their panel was. Charlie Nicholas hated us too.

Le Tiss was the worst. Merse forced himself to be impartial 95% of the time, and was very complimentary about us last season.

Slightly concerning how there seems to be fair bit of chat surrounding this transfer regarding how he's young so he can learn and improve and change X & Y under Klopp, when really we need someone to hit the ground the running and hold our season together.

I worry a bit about his recovery pace and acceleration, however he's built ridiculously strongly for a twenty year old, and will add some physicality at the back. He'll also provide an increased threat at corners, so we can hopefully drop the abysmal short corner routine.
