It's an attempt to differentiate skill or true talent from luck, be it bad or good. Since its always safe to expect regression to the mean it can be used to gauge whether a team has been lucky/ unlucky.

In Rodgers first season we scored 89% of what would be expected from our shots, in his second we scored 120% of what would be expected.

Gerrard's wife is constantly on holiday in Dubai so maybe that's why they could hide it from him. She could have already been over there with the kids.
