Trent

No - I’m sure playing a proper 6 in the team will ruin Trent, he’ll fall apart like a slow cooked lamb shank and probably turn to drink, drugs and promiscuous grannies to compensate for it.

I'm not sure we'll ever see the best of Trent again tbh. He's now got.it in his mind he's a midfielder, and klopps half fufilling that idea by playing the hybrid role.

He either needs to be a right back, or he needs to move to mid. Klopp will do neither.

I'd like us to buy a RB

I've been saying it all summer.

I was hoping he'd come back this season with his head screwed on and improved, like how he finished last season. Nah. He's still thick defensively and now we actually have creative midfielders, do we actually need him in that hybrid position any more?

Right back, let him duke it out with szob for RCM, as szob can rotate with Salah for RW.

Bring us fresenda or whatever his fucking name is

Watching yesterday there was 2-3 times the ball was about to come across and there was a player in great space behind him and he didn’t realize.

I’m just surprised it happens to such a good player so often. Or maybe the game has moved forward tactically that this is expected and a-ok

Trent has never cared about who is behind him. He would move forward to press a winger, when behind that winger their FB is overlapping full steam ahead. Their FB will inevitably get the ball in acres of space and Trent just turns around and jog on seemingly having done his job while our leggy Konate desperately rushes over to cover. I have already accepted that Trent was under instruction to press regardless and we "defend as a team". He can't be that thick.

Now that he's given the right to become some hybrid FB, I am fully expecting more pain on our right when the big teams come around.

It doesn’t matter who you play at RB, if you then put Trent at RCM - the RB is still going to have to get high up the pitch to form the passing triangles between RB, RCM & RW.

The RCB is still going to have to cover in behind and the DM is still going to have swap between plugging gaps in defence and pushing high to press.

This is all about movement and not being predictable - in the sense that, in an attacking sense, Mo, Slobbers & Trent can interchange between our wide, half space and deeper.

Trent was involved 3 goals on saturday. He did ok overall, will get better once we down especially with whole new midfield.

It’s interesting that MacAllister revealed the plan for him this season is to play at RCM - maybe he was supposed to interchange with Trent and fill the gaps when Trent ventures forward. Presumably Szobo would be at LCM in that case and given more of a creative license, the way he plays for Hungary. The lack of a #6 put a spanner in the works temporarily, but maybe with Endo and a possible another DM signing or Thiago/Bajtetic we will see the realization of Klopp’s idea:

——-Szoboszlai————————-
—————-————-MacAllister—
——————DM———Trent———

This would invert our usual shape where LCM used to be the more defensive player compared to RCM - with Macca staying more disciplined at RCM this could in theory help protect our right side which has been a defensive liability last season.

Does the midfield rebuild with the pending signing of Gravenberch means Trent's reverting back to previous RB role?

Southgate plans to continue playing Trent in midfield. His name was listed among the midfielders.

Wouldn’t have thought so, we’ve come this far now just to have him revert back. Endo will be used as cover but likely continue filling in until Grav is up to speed. Grav will then step in when ready.

[article]Inverting from right-back into central areas, he had an absolute field day spotting passes over the top of Villa’s high defensive line. Twenty of his 69 successful passes were ones that went over the top of the Villa back four, who remained high despite not the rest of the team not applying much pressure on the ball at all.

Given the level of Alexander-Arnold’s performance, Klopp will be hoping that the injury he appeared to suffer in the second half isn’t too serious.

It was a corner from his captain that saw Liverpool take the lead. Alexander-Arnold’s outswinging delivery from the right was missed by everyone and found its way to Szoboszlai on the edge of the box. The summer signing rifled home emphatically on the half-volley with his left foot to become the fourth Hungarian to score in the Premier League, after Zoltán Gera, Tamás Priskin and Ákos Buzsáky.

That was Alexander-Arnold’s 10th Premier League assist in 2023, making him just of three players (after Leandro Trossard and Mohamed Salah) to hit that mark this year. It’s the third time he’s assisted 10+ league goals in a calendar year, after 2019 (17) and 2021 (13).[/article]

Trent's passing today was phenomenal. That's the kind of damage he's capable of when allowed time on the ball.

Villa didn't know what to do with Trent. Our press from the front and midfield meant that Villa found it hard to venture forward, and that gave Trent a lot more time on the ball for his long-range hollywood balls.

Emery had no answer to our tactics today, especially Trent.

Supposing he isn't - surely we should play Endo at RB with Gomez retaining the CB role, with a more defensive line up?
Is it confirmed that Konate is out and that Van Dijk is suspended for an additional game?
Also, Endo doesn't have the pace to play at RB.
I wonder why Klopp never tried Tsimikas on the right when needed, because a lot of teams play with inverted wingers nowadays. I remember Arbeloa shutting down Messi on the left.

Konate should be back after the international break. Nothing on Virgil yet, but he will get an additional game.

2 weeks should be enough for Trent to be back I reckon.

I think this is the thing we can do that’s unique - there isn’t a right back like Trent.

I said a while ago that one of the key issues for this season was whether we could get Trent space and time on the ball to hurt teams - we did against Villa and it worked a treat. It must be so hard to mark him, because if they focus all their pressing effort on Trent in a deep position, it frees up space for the other midfielders to be creative.

I’m liking Big Mac in the 6 position - he’s great at holding the ball in pressure situations and breaking through the press by carrying the ball or threading a pass.

I can see him playing there more - with Slobbers, Curtis, Gravy & Harvey probing getting more creative license further forward.

Yeah looks like we're converting Mac to a DM

He played 18 games as a DM for Brighton last season, so hardly converting. He's pretty familiar with it.
Yeah, I know but I mean in the sense that he wasn't bought to be our DM. At least that's my understanding of it.

I'm not sure after the signing of Gravenberch. Our best midfield will probably end up being Szobo - Mac Allister - Gravenberch.
The signing of Endo gives us cover at 6.

Mac Allister also dictates the play like no other midfielder we have that are comfortable in that role.
