Trent, Salah and VVD

Was it before the last contract extension that Mo said he couldn't rule out going to Man City or am I just imagining that?

People come and go. LFC has been about the most constant thing in my life. I find it hard to get bothered about the individual decisions players make these days. When in doubt, zoom out.
100% this.

He won't be considered a legend. But that's his choice to make. We got some great mileage out of him.

Just to clarify the doctor comment, it’s amazing how much players improve physically when they join Madrid. And back in the day when the Operation Puerto case saw a load of Spanish cyclists take a fall for doping, it was alleged that athletes from other sports, including football, were also on the hook until the courts ordered the samples be destroyed, which is totally what you would do to prove everything was above board. Getting to the bottom of it all would be a really bad idea.
The doctor at the centre of that scandal, Eufemiano Fuentes, made reference in his evidence in court to money he was owed by Real Madrid. They threatened to sue him, and said he’d not provided any medical services to the club. As far as I can tell, they never did sue. Which you totally wouldn’t if you had a strong case for defamation.
All smoke and mirrors as you would expect, but it didn’t look good.

Never knew this story, thanks for sharing.

I don't think they'll buy him. It's only money he'll take for himself as a signing on fee when he goes on a free. Why would he do that for a few more months?

Yeah, I agree.

They're basically offering us his signing on fee.

But he really doesn't want to go right now. It's just for aesthetics. So he can say in the summer it wasn't about money and Liverpool could have got a fee for him.

In a way though, I don't blame him for wanting to leave. If I was him, i'd rather go and play for Real Madrid, than put my future in the hands of FSG, who showed 0 ambition with marquee signings in the summer, and 0 ambition in getting the captain/best player in the world rn signed up to new contracts? I'd be thinking what if Salah and VVD leave, and how has it got this far?

Why would I want to stay at a club where the coach is constantly expected to create magic and players overperform?

All the while, giving up a 20m signing on fee (to John Henry) and a massive wage hike.

Without the whole "this means more" emotion, it's actually a no brainer.

Sad to say, but as shite as they are, United show more ambition to keep their homegrown talents. We simply don't.

Letting 3 of our most important players (give or take a Gravyboat or so) get into the last few months of their contract is utterly incompetent management. FSG deserve all the stick in the world for this.

All 3 could still turn around and sign for other clubs and we'd be stuck with Forest Gump up front as our main goalscorer.

Not sure I get this. We currently look like the best run club in England and our ownerships decisions have really put us top of the cl and the premier league.

Meanwhile buying all the talent in the world for other clubs has completely back fired.

Having a great manager is so much more important.

If anything it’s made it a harder decision to leave for Trent Alexander Bellingham

Again, managerial transition is the reason for this and some players reluctance to sign on for a new manager without first seeing it.

They also entrusted too much power to Klopp at the end. This is part of it

I think we have to keep until the end of the season regardless. Bigger risk in changing something thats working mid season.
The 25 mill is nothing compared to our current position.
Exactly this. I doubt this sideshow currently bothers his team mates. Get this season done and replace him. I'm not sure he's making that big a difference that he's not replaceable ... but not mid-season.

If he’s lifting a big trophy then he’ll get a decent reaction imo. It will show though he’s going for the experience and Spainish trophies, not the domestic trophies as he’s set to win everything here.
Not a chance. He'll be booed off the pitch. Use this forum as your yardstick. He's doing a Mcmanaman.

This season. We don’t invest enough to guarantee it year on year. That’s what Real offer… a guaranteed shot every year.

Anyways, I can’t believe some of you are so butt hurt you’d sell in Jan. At this point it is what it is, the only thing that matters is winning the league etc. Why jeopardize that?

I still feel the same way as I did in the quad year… if we genuinely did it, couldn’t care less what happens afterwards, we’d have completed football.

He won't be booed off. It'll be a half hearted cheer towards him for sure though.

If he stays until the end of the season, he'll be cheered like the rest of them. But he'll have fallen behind the likes of Gravy and Macca in the popularity stakes.

Not even remotely close to the same thing is it? It’s actually not like any previous transfer. He’s going to the biggest club in the world but at a time where we look the best in form team in the world.

No, not the same. More some one is advising him wrong. If he wants to move to Madrid he could have left with more integrity by just coming out and saying it rather than all the cloaks and daggers. Or, he could leave a legend of Liverpool and sign for Madrid in a year or two (I am sure they could come up with some clause in his contract for this to work). It's a shame because even if he does sign a new contact I am not sure if his reputation will ever be the same as he has conducted himself as a mercenary.

I assume even under new CL he is still cup tied? If not then we shouldn’t be selling him at this stage for anything less than 35m as he will add another dimension to Real’s CL campaign this year.

No more cup tied situations.

What do the regulations say about squad changes?

Here are the relevant extracts from the UEFA Champions League regulations:

  • 46.01: As of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 2 February 2024 (24.00CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.
  • 46.02: Any or all of the players from the above quota of three may have been fielded for another club in the qualifying phase, play-offs or group stage of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League.

THAT's the kicker right there. While in an ideal world I'd have preferred him to stay, his going to another club won't particularly stick in my gullet. If he does so in a way that robs LFC of the fee it should have got for him, on the other hand, that'll be another matter entirely and I'll despise him for it the way I despised McMoneyman.

Yes. I don't like footballers in general but I'm happy to delude myself that they are good guys whilst they play for Liverpool. As soon as they leave (especially in these cases) that illusion is broken and I couldn't care less. *See Henderson.
