Trent, Salah and VVD

i can tell you one thing, i don’t remember city ever being 8 points clear mid season and having a public standoff about money with their best player. that says as much about their dodgy dealings as it does our tightness.

and the fact it's not just one player, it's 3 core 1st team players.

The club always try to send a director. When no-one else wants to go, it's usually Kenny plus a few people on the football admin side. Hogan lives in London (or he certainly used to) so it's no biggie for him to go to Southampton.

Is it tightness or a desire to maximise the return on money spent within the current financial rules?
That's a question rather than a statement by the way.

I really do trust the leadership. They do what's best for the club. There's always two sides to this, and Salah's agent is a total tosser as we all know.

If anything this just signifies Mo wants to stay. He's pushing for a deal. Otherwise why give the interview.

Agreed. But if this was their approach, they are now close to January, and have to make that signing happen.

it’s the latter being referred to as the former

i’m on team give virgil whatever he wants but be wary with Mo, the dropoff could be steeper in his position

The gamble would be not thinking about the replacement now regardless. There's no such thing as a moneyball like for like replacement anyway. That's not what moneyball is.

We have really good strength in depth at forward. We've been waiting for one of the others to step up to that next level. Diaz has threatened to in terms of production this season, and while some signs look good for gakpo, we need to keep spinning that wheel with transfers.

Maybe Salah is being a bit sarky about it but it’s annoying for us, I can only imagine how annoying it is for him. I just read without his goals and the points that come with it (17 apparently) Chelsea would be above us, and we’d be out of the top 4. It’s all hypothetical obviously, but the joke is that it’s gotten to this point.

It’s criminal that our 3 best players contracts have been allowed to run down. It might not be moneyball but it’s clear as day Salah’s got at least another 1-2 seasons in him, and if not someone will definitely take him off our hands. They might be paying over the odds for an aging player, but Fenway have created this situation for themselves.

Fenway has barely spent anything in years. Who knows what we would’ve won with a little more injected into the team. Man City are in transition, Arsenal are bottle jobs. We have a proper chance at some domination, and they’re going to cost us again with their penny pinching.

It doesn't always take a season. But a few season later we had Salah and Mane and we didn't look back.
Before Suarez there was Torres, before Fowler and Owen there was Rush.
And one could argue none bar Rush have had the level of consistency that Mo has for as long as he has. It’s insane how good he’s been. Top 3 player of all time already.

I suspect two of the contract extensions are all but done already. They'll announce them in January, so the moaning is kept to a minimum when we don't sign any 'new' players

Ideally you want to announce them this side of New Year.

I've said all along that I think 2 of 3 resign.

I think Trent is most likely to go.

We've seen an aging City this year which should give pause for thought on multi year extensions, but Salah and Virgil are different.

Just get it done.

Oh and if they don't sign... does it make Hughes role untenable?

Both Virgil and Salah have pretty much said they want to stay.

I guess it depends on how the summer / next season goes. If, by some miracle, unearth the next VVD and Salah then everyone will be queuing up to suck him off.

So yeah, untenable.

Why?

he walked into a shit storm. Not entirely Hughes' fault.

As soon as Klopp told the management he was giing, they should have offered renewals to the three out of contract players, hell they should have done it that summer of 23.

If this drags on much longer, it will become disruptive to Slot's plans and maybe even dressing room spirit.

Sarky about it, and annoying for him?

He has all the power. His manager has nothing to do with it. He gets to be a big cunt, it's never been more about him and he is loving it.

He is trying to get all the money he possibly can. That's all he's doing. He's willing to be a cunt to do it and unsettle things. I get why he's doing what he's doing, and he'd better do it while he's playing well, but I'm not sure how it illicits sympathy. If this was another club, you'd all be laughing at what suckers the supporters were, and what a cunt the star was being.

Yes, he's a big star and a huge player for us. He is paid accordingly. He's paid as though he should be doing exactly what he is now. I don't think it matters anywhere near as much as anyone else whether he goes or not, but it's in his interest to make the argument that it's critically important that we keep an aging star for years, and he's desperately doing that at the expense of the club. I don't know why it's in our interest to parrot the argument, but he seems to have many takers.

I'm pretty certain that it's not the money that's the issue (Mo., maybe VvD too) but the length of the contract. At his age all players want long term security - few get it but if they do the club could be the ones paying the penalty for a player who's form drops off a cliff well before the end of the contract due to age. Not saying that is the case with Mo. but being fit and ripped doesn't equal longevity. It's going to be a gamble either way.

Every contract extension is a gamble. I'm pretty sure we'd be able to sell Mo in the unlikely event of a sudden decline. What are we talking about here? ~20m a year?

Unless he has a career ending injury next year, the risk isn't as big as it's being made out to be.

Unsure about he bolded bit. I'm sure we'd happily offer him 3 years on a quarter of his wage, he wouldn't accept it.

Money absolutely is important in this. Maybe not the key factor, but it's going to be a big one

And agent fee. I dont think they ever brought in the agent fee cap.

It may be both Virgil and Salahs agents last big paycheck for that player. Certainly Virgils. Salah may get one from Saudi if he wants it.

Salah did the same thing before signing the latest extension. Its all part of the game regarding getting the best deal for himself. Its our own fault for letting one of the best players in the World get down to his last 7 months of the existing contract, so I've got no issue with him being vocal about it in the media.
He certainly backs it up on the pitch as well.

Just get it sorted. Come one Hughes!

Taxi for Hughes and his arrogant, egotistical lacky pulling his strings.

6 months in and you've failed to back the man in the summer, you've failed to negotiate the 1 player he asked for and until now you've failed to meet the terms of 2 of the most important players in the clubs history. 3 strikes and yer out sunshine.

Hire someone who understands this club, or at least understands a bit about football.

Apparently it was 2 he failed to negotiate on. The second hasn't been made mainstream.

Personal terms were agreed, but we were far apart on the fee of course.
