The flip side is that there were rumours that Salah said his signing depended on Liverpool showing ambition in the transfer market. So I choose to believe that this means Salah is signing.
I certainly hope so, mate!
[article]Somewhere in Cameroon, Mohamed Salah is likely to be smiling.
The Liverpool forward is still giving his all for his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, but he'll surely have been kept abreast of the news that his club side have lined up a deal for the Porto winger Luis Diaz, who is expected to sign for the Reds in the coming days.
Diaz was arguably the best player on the pitch in the first half of Porto's trip to Anfield in November, before a sumptuous Thiago Alcantara goal and a typical Salah one turned the tables in favour of the hosts.
The Egyptian will be well aware of the Colombian then, and he'll know just what he can do.
He'll also see this as a statement of intent from the Reds.
As talks over his new contract continue to stall, it was claimed last month that one of the things Salah wanted to see from the Reds was a continued commitment to investing in the best players.
The Liverpool squad is incredibly talented of course, but it is also getting on a bit. Salah and Sadio Mane will both turn 30 in the next six months, with Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and Roberto Firmino already past that milestone.
That doesn't mean they're past 'it' of course, far from it, but
the need for the Liverpool squad to get younger has been apparent for quite some time.
The signings of the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Diogo Jota have seen steps taken along that road, but the deal for Diaz - a recently turned 25-year-old - is a giant leap.
The fact that he plays off the left and loves to cut inside is something that is likely to impact on Mane more than anyone, with the Senegalese's contract also running out in 18 months' time just like Salah's, even if it is talked about a lot less.
The notion of Salah, Mane and Firmino all going into next season with a year left on their deals - or even all three going in it all - has been something that has got less and less likely with each passing week, and the deal for Diaz heaps more uncertainty on that.
But of the three it is Salah who is the most likely to stay, simply because there would be the biggest uproar if he left.
Seeing the addition of young quality around him will please the forward then, as he might like some younger legs to do his running for him the older he gets.
In addition, Diaz won't be coming in on an enormous wage, and so won't be taking up valuable funds that could be used for Salah's contract. It is a freshening up of the squad at a vital time.
The former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique called it perfectly earlier this week.
Speaking to BoyleSports, he said: "They still need someone else who can play in the front three similar to Jota, who’s scoring goals and doing well.
"Profile-wise, Liverpool need another £40m or £50m kind of player to support the front three now. I’m sure if you ask any Liverpool fan they would say the same thing."
Well if they are then their demands have been answered.
The Diaz deal shows that Liverpool are determined to stick around at the summit of the game for a while yet, and long after some of the current squad have moved on.
Salah will have been reassured by that, and another hurdle in his protracted contract negotiations may just have been passed.[/article]
