Heard a Jewish guy (actually an Israeli living in London) on the radio this morning.
He said they had formed Jewish "defense squads" which quickly intervene when Jews are being attacked in Stamford Hill. He said it (in normal times) takes the police at least 10-15 minutes to arrive, so he and his friends jump to help people until the police arrives.
He said that in the current riots, since they are close to Tottenham (hope I'm not mixing locations) they had a few "invasions". He said the current riots begin when groups of 5-6 guys gather and create large groups of a few dozens than gain confidence and start things. So their strategy is to confront them while they're still in small numbers - 5-6, hold them back and call the police to handle them. He said that it's been working for them.

Yes. People are blaming society and communities for creating this situation but the way people are pulling together to try to protect others and to help to clear up afterwards suggests to me that society is not all bad.

True, but does anyone really listen to Griffin anymore? The effectiveness of that kind of thing would depend a lot on how the political mainstream react. People will automatically look to the response of the government and main opposition parties before listening to the extreme fringes.

The sensible thing for the government (supported by the opposition) to do now would be to get tough, punish those who were caught and strongly contain any incidents that might happen from now on. Get the message across that this is the way society is and if you want to be part of it then you act in an appropriate way. As I said before, I think this is what the majority wish to see. Most of them are sickened by the riots and do not support the rioters, and with any kind of 'cause', if you don't have public support then you have nothing.

If the mainstream politicians are seen to take a soft approach then that is when parties like the BNP take advantage ('those main parties don't listen to you and don't care, but we do' etc etc.)

I lived in Toxteth 30 years ago when I was a kid. Here's a couple of things I know for certain. A lot of people didn't want a job and were quite happy screwing the place all day long. Some of them who were out throwing bottles then at the police as kids were out setting fire to cars last night as men, with their own kids and grandkids with them.
