Torres: We're playing 442

"I'm enjoying it this season because we're more attack-minded," Torres said. "We are playing more offensively at home, we're playing with two strikers and we're scoring more goals. We have improved this area of our game."

Is this true? Sure, we're more attack-minded, but are we actually playing with two strikers? If so, I'm not sure who the second is: Kuyt? Yossi? I only saw highlights of the game v Hull, but it seemed to me we were playing 4231 again, or possibly 4141, with Gerrard more advanced than Lucas in CM.

Then again, Torres is there, on the pitch, and if he says he has a striker partner, who are we to disagree? I'd still like to know who it is though.

It looks more like 4231, just like we've done for ages, with Kuyt pushing up when needed.

I guess we are playing with two strikers, because Kuyt is playing, it doesn't always look like 442 though.

That was true last season as well though.

when torres says 'two strikers' I think he is refering to himself and gerrard rather than kuyt. two holding midfielders, two wide midfielders and two strikers.

Well...Kuyt is a striker so we are playing with two strikers on the pitch.

until gerrard was dropped deep gerrard was occupying the final third far more often than kuyt. kuyt is almost always wide now and before the switch gerrard was almost always tucked in behind torres.

Gerrard may have played as a second striker last season, but against Burnley and Hull he was in CM.

Fail.

I missed the 'this season' part. okay then torres is refering to yossi, he certainly isn't refering to kuyt who spends a lot of his time protecting the right flank and supporting johnson.

Maybe he is not referring to any individual per se but just to the fact we are getting extra men into the box ... who that is may rotate but in each instance could be construed as a very fluid 4-4-2

I think he is referring to Kuyt.

Kuyt does tend to interchange with Yossi and others, but he seems to start games up top.

Maybe he's just wrong.
Just a thought.

torres? not possible. the guy can DO no wrong.

He didn't LOOK like he was enjoying this season more when he was moaning at refs, lying on the ground writhing and getting involved in pointless little battles. So I guess he's been enjoying it, on and off, for about two or three weeks. At least he's improving.

you mean he is enjoying it now gerrard has moved deeper into midfield? isn't that when the goals started to flow again?

Maybe....just maybe...what Torres meant was that he was effectively as good as 2 strikers, that he could do the job of 2 strikers all by himself.....whoah.....

check this shit out....

Voronin + Ngog + Kuyt combined will still be < Torres

Can we just agree on where Kuyt and Yossi are playing first. I think it is fairly obvious that Kuyt is playing more in the middle and Yossi more on the right, although there is a bit of interchanging going on. To my mind it needs to be the other way around, Dirk on the right and Yossi in the Middle.
Whoever it is they are playing behind Torres.
So, as for Torres idea that he is playing up there with another striker, whoever that is, he is confused.
There may be a little more to it than meets the eye, perhaps this is to dispel the idea he can't , or won't, play up front as part of a pair, perhaps there is a plan afoot to play two up front, and not necessarily someone already at the club

regards

kuyt should definately be the one who pulls wide (wide will be happy 😉 ) he will cover the right side better and yossi should definately be the one who works closest to gerrard because he has better skill (than yossi) to execute an intricate pass for torres.

I agree (altough I think you meant "than Dirk" in the brackets)

I thought we played more of a 4-4-2 recently with Kuyt playing more centrally, when Stevie has played back in the middle. I assume he's talking about that. It is a pretty fluid formation anyway.

He has played more centrally , but it's still been off Torres

We play a different formation just about every game.

It amazes me that people don't see it. "4-4-2? No, it was 4-2-3-1! But where was Kuyt playing!!!!"

4-4-1-1 then. To me that's really just the same as 4-4-2. It's very rare you'd get a 4-4-2 without one of the strikers dropping off the other.

I think Torres just means to say he has a striker, Kuyt with him now rather than a midfielder, Gerrard.
