Peter and I are having a debate in the Suarez/Torres thread ... so, Fowler in his (albeit shortlived) pomp or Torres in his (albeit shorlived) pomp? Who was the better striker? The better goalscorer?

Fowler every day of the week. My favourite ever Liverpool player (although Gerrard is close)

If it wasn't for the injuries and lack of discipline Fowler would have gone on to be this Countries best ever striker. Never really got a chance for England either who persisted with Shearer and Sheringham for ages.

It's sad but imagine how good Fowler could have been if he'd been managed by Evans the way Ferguson brings through young players. The whole Spice Boy/Uncle Roy era is one of underachievement but there's no other player for whom "what could have been" is more appropriate.

Think Im gonna consider locking this thread..

Purely over the fact.. Torres vs Fowler..

cmon.. jesus

Its an insult..

Robbie pre-knee injury was fucking sensational, not as fast as the older Torres but his instincts in the goal area were truly extraordinary. In terms of killer instinct I have never seen anyone as good ever, Torres was quicker and better in the air but with Robbie It really did feel like for about two years straight he never ever missed a chance, he just didnt fucking miss! It was proper spooky shit....

Im not sure about the relative styles etc, and in terms of sheer legendary status it is a no contest due to certain Loyalty issues with Judas but all that aside for me Robbie Fowler was just a one off.... it's such a shame that inuries robbed him of a longer career with us and with England.

This one surely cannot be up for debate.

Fowler all the way.

A more closer comparison (in terms of voting?) could be Owen or Torres.

What????????????????????

So you're saying that Torres was not just inferior to Fowler but also to Owen?

Never thought I'd hear that.

Hey LTW, does this mean you win by proxy? Oh darn.

It just means you're a revisionist!

I think you're just a rafaist ... So you remember that era so fondly that it dilutes how amazing Fowler was. I just wish we could have kept him, Owen, and Torres healthy ... We may have actually won more.

Hmmmmmm1 raises an interesting point - Owen or Torres ... Now there, I'd be torn but would probably lean to Torres.

God scored 183 goals in 369 games for the club. Torres scored 81 in 142 - yes, a higher level of efficiency, but would he have kept scoring at that clip as injuries took their toll on him like they did on Fowler? We'll never know...

But what we do know is what happened, which is: Fowler scored more in a longer career with us, and scored more than 30 goals across all competitions three years in a row, starting from when he was just 19. Torres only ever scored more than 30 goals once for us, in his debut season, finishing with 17 and 22 in the seasons after.

Fowler was, and remains the deadliest striker I've ever seen play for us, and it's got nothing to do with the manner of Torres' departure. He was just so good, it was supernatural.

This is a broader question than just pure goalscoring ability. The question is who was the better overall footballer.

Fowler was indeed the most clinical striker that played for us, but I'd still take Torres at his best. He was lethal at his best and had pace, strength and good interplay in and around the box. He linked up well with Gerrard too. It's a difficult comparison. I'd say in terms of style a Torres/Owen comparison would be more valid, but Torres would win that for the same reasons.

Anyway, three absolutely exceptional strikers when at the height of their respective games.

Torres in that first two years was the best thing I ever watched up front for us. Fowler might have had better goalscoring seasons and he was brilliant but I'd have to pick Torres.

The is with link up play that Torres only succeeded when he was the only striker - which is why he only really succeeded in the 4-5-1 Rafa developed for him. Fowler was phenomenal be it with Colly, Rushie, Owen or even as a 'hero returning home' (can you imagine Owen or Torres ever doing that?). He was the best finisher I've ever seen - because unlike Rushie he could do it from anywhere and consistently.

Yeah me too. Also Premier League wasn't nearly as good when Fowler was at his peak. Not trying to take anything away from Fowler of course and I hate comparisons like this.

Robbie had everything as a footballer. The levels of natural ability he had were frightening............... His only flaw was in his personal life, where he maybe didn't apply himself as well as other international footballers. He was a little sidetracked by things as he became rich and famous.
We sold him to a drunk O'Leary for £11 million....... When he was almost finished as a footballer At his pomp he wouldn't have been far away from a world record transfer fee.
