Is Carroll really that good?

I haven't seen much football aside from Liverpool this season, but the few times I have seen him he's looked a little clumsy on the ball.
I predicted on a pre-season thread that Carroll would be a big hit this season and he hasn't let me down. He is an old-fashioned battering ram forward who will never score more than 20 goals in a season but as long as he is part of a two-man forward line he'll make shitloads of goals for his strike partner and the rest of the team.

He's the player Heskey should have been because Carroll has a the ruthless streak that Heskey lacks. IMO anything under £25m represents good value for him.

Edit: Actually he's capable of scoring 20+ goals per season but his goal tally will always be at least matched by the amount of goals he makes for teammates.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

GBP50M or nothing! You want the player, he wants to go to you, we want to sell him to you so stump up the cash and its cut and dried.

I was going to ask whether that type of player would suit the sort of football we'll want to be playing, i.e. measured possession football. That said, we're fairly shit at that sort of thing anyways and Drogba has been pretty successful for Chelsea as a battering ram. The main concern for me, I suppose, is that Carroll lacks the sort of quality and technique that Drogba has.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

The more I read about how Torres has behaved for the last months the more I'd like him to fuck off.

Yeah I like him too...the only concern I have is the he could be a one hit (year) wonder.

What he has in common with Drogba is self-belief, they both know their worth and if they miss an easy chance it doesn't bother them because they KNOW they'll get the next one. He lacks Drogba's pace but he's much stronger in the air. He has the potential to be a better version of Duncan Ferguson.

I doubt, if we sign him, we'll instantly become a long-ball team because he's the type of player who can hold the ball up and bring others into play but it would be nice to have a big forward to play the long ball to every now and again to give us various attacking options. It goes without saying though that there's no point signing him unless we sign some genuine wide players who can supply him with the ammunition.

He's not fit to lace Drogba's boots....

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

I hate football nowadays.

You cannot trust a single word professional footballer say these days.

Cunts.

If the Toon gave rejected a bid of 23m then there is no chance. That offer was like the bartering scene in the Life of Brian.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

Today is going to be crazy.

Already rumours about Torres staying.

That Comolli has traveled to Spain. We're after Aguero

Etc etc etc

I doubt the club will announce the sale of Torres before a deal for his replacement is in place, or we'll be quoted exhorbitant prices by the clubs of those strikers we're interested in.
Well, I think everyone knows at this point we are looking to replace Torres and they know we are in a hurry. It's a shit position to be in and that's why I think Anelka would be a good option.

That said I'm still hoping for something unexpected to happen. Like Llorente, Aguero or Giuseppe Rossi.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

this is what I don't get about torres;

the club is being bleed dry by yanks - he stays
the have under the yanks have a sell to buy ploicy for 3 transfer windows - he stays
rafa leaves - he stays
roy is hired - he stays
roy attempts - to turn him into a carthouse - to be fair was between transfer windows

we remove the debt
we hire kenny (someone who torres on record says he admires)
we show the beginnings of expansive football
we sign a quality forward to partner torres

'THEN' torres wants out, and it it for a team on the up? man city, spurs? no it's for a team in decline, a team that will need rebuilding like we ourselves need rebuilding.
I conceed torres is going for footballing reasons rather than money but is he likely to get the trophies he craves at chelsea?

Staying? Why?

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

We shouldn't sell. If we are trying to find a replacement, we'll only end up paying a massive premium.

Even if we end up selling Nando for slightly less in the summer (which seems unlikely), we'll still probably end up with more money because we won't be in such a tough position in terms of buying his replacement.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

Anyone read the Times yet? Barrett claims it was a meeting with Huang that persuaded him to stay last summer.

If that were true, which it isn't, because it makes no sense, he'd be a total fucking idiot.

Sounds like bollocks to me.

And Fernando was 6/4 to stay on Betfair last night, not that there was a lot of money available to back him at that price.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

The fact that Abramovich is reluctant to pay 50 mill is the big deal breaker here though.
Anelka has said that he is settled in London, and we don't want Sturridge.

50 mill or no sale.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

I'm probably quiffing, but the Guardian are reporting (speculating) that Chelsea think they can get Torres for less than £40m if they make their last offer close to the deadline. I really hope we make it clear to them well in advance that that won't work, because I really fear now that we're going to be stuck with a pariah who doesn't want to be here for the next five months.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

Well, according to Ben Smith, that is our current stand

#LFC will sell Torres to #CFC today if their valuation is met AND Dalglish can sign replacements in time

We don't have to let them know in advance at all. We should just reject the bid, and they will know what to do in the summer.

As long as the buy-out clause is not met, we don't have any obligation to sell.

What I get out of it is the exceptional poor timing of all by Torres.

I could understand him if he left in the summer. I could understand him if he made it clear in December that we had not shown anything to match his ambitions.

But now. I just dont get it. However if he is that frustrated, and personally moving his head around I do forgive him and wish him the best. I know frustration and what that feeling can do to you physically and mentally. If this place frustrate him, so be it. There will be plenty of other which we will make happy.

Is that not what we've been having anyway for the last five months or so?
He'll surely be doing better with Suarez alongside him (unhappy as he might be)

Well, it is not like he is stuck in Guantanamo. We still have a good team and we still have fantastic supporters. We will probably not win the league this season, but he should be able to pick himself up if he stays.

Re: Torres - Chelsea 35mil Bid turned down

Weve told them £50m or no deal because we want to know where we stand regards a replacement. Also he can only go 'if' we can get someone in on time.

Sappo everyone. Another day of jarg then. I fell a kip at abaa 10 last night so if there's been any news gis a run down. Nicer hearing it from you lot than sky news.
