I think the more English players we add to the team, the worse we get.
Hah, that's because we have mainly bought poor English players. Buying a good one would probably have a reverse effect.

And of course this home grown quota thing has to be taken into consideration.

I really hope we sign Young, as I reckon he's exactly the type of player we need, the fact he knows the Prem already just makes us buying him even more sound.

£15M would be a good prize even.

I hope we're doing it.

Do it.

Young may be over rated a tad due to his nationality and decent first season but he would improve us. He can play on either flank and has pace (something we crave). I wouldn't advocate spunking silly money on him but for 10 million he may well be worth signing.
I agree with this, although I think he'll end up going for at least £15M.

And for that money I would prefer someone like Mata.

I was hoping his contract situation might weaken his price.

Yeah I'm a big fan of Mata who will probably move on for a fee in and around 15-20million. That is guesswork of course but I'd say it is a decent estimate.

Villa are good negotiators though think of the Barry saga we had with them; they refused to budge from £18M, and then they got a huge amount for Milner and Barry in the last two years.

Hodgson said recently that their isn't a PL manager who hasn't considered Young at some point. I think that's accurate, and that such managers would make themselves known with solid, respectable bids if he did become available.

Didn't they only end up getting 12m for Barry though? Not exactly the best business they did. Although I'm glad they held out...

He was down to his final year on his contract by this point and was determined to leave. Plus Villa must have known he was on the decline, because Barry has done nothing at City to suggest he's even a £12M player, so I think Villa done quite well out of it all things considered.

(although the money hasn't been reinvested)

Yeah, I suppose it was good business. Especially considering how his career has nose dived.

I rather have Mata than Young too, I think like a lot of people I've convinced myself that Young is better than what he is, the idea of him is far better than the reality.

Maybe Barry would be worth a punt now?

Barry is fat and shit. I still think Young is a great little footballer. Well better than a pace merchant like Lennon. I'd be made up if we end up with him on one wing and Hazard on the other i think we would be quite an attacking threat. Who would you mark with Torres and Gerrard coming up the middle.

RAWK would mark Lucas.

They love that guy! Someone nailed it the other day when they said the rafa love got deflected onto Lucas when Rafa was sacked. Was it Peter I can't remember...anyway... I got my hopes up after the Chelsea game. Then came Stoke. Never again Lucas! Never again!

Another price, another suitor in today's rumour mill:
MANCHESTER UNITED will try to take advantage of player unrest at Aston Villa with a £20million January move for Ashley Young.

United’s serious interest in signing the contract rebel emerged in the same week that Villa’s stars held crisis talks behind manager Gerard Houllier’s back to try to sort out the club’s problems.

People Sport understands a meeting, attended by every first-team player, was called by senior professionals on Wednesday in a bid to clear the air and get to the bottom of their current dismal run of form.

After three wins in just 13 matches Houllier is under increasing pressure in the Midlands, although yesterday’s 2-1 defeat of West Brom takes some of the heat off him.

Several Villa stars are believed to be unhappy with the Frenchman’s methods, but the point made by Villa’s senior pros was that he will be at the club at lot longer than the players unless they start performing.

Houllier, who upset Villa fans last week with comments made after the 3-0 defeat by his former club Liverpool, is already looking to make changes in personnel at Villa Park and he could cash in on star man Young to fund other transfers.

United will try to get the deal done for the 25-year-old England man in the January transfer window but, if it cannot be pushed through, Sir Alex Ferguson will return next summer.

The fact that Young is not cup-tied in the Champions League means Fergie would have him available for the knock-out campaign. Ryan Giggs, now closing in on retirement, is not able to play in as many games as he did earlier in his career and Ferguson sees Young as a better alternative to Ji-Sung Park.

Young has told Villa he will not discuss a new deal with them until next summer and that has opened the door to several suitors.

There was interest from Tottenham in the summer and Manchester City asked to be kept informed of the player’s situation, but neither club made a firm enquiry.

Now Liverpool are also bang in the hunt but United are in the box seat.

There is no suggestion that Young is one of the players frustrated by Houllier’s methods – his decision to delay signing a new deal until next summer came before the Frenchman had even arrived at the club.

But the chance to play for a side in the Champions League rather than one which needs rebuilding is an obvious attraction for a player who wants to establish himself in England’s starting line-up.

Young joined Villa from Watford in a £9.65m deal four years ago.

Many questioned then Villa boss Martin O’Neill’s decision to shell out such a sum on a 22-year-old, but the Irishman was proved right as Young kicked on to become an international.

O’Neill is very close to Ferguson and will have told him to pull out all the stops for a playr he once described as “world class.â€

Liverpool make initial offer for Suarez
12th Dec 2010 - Media Watch

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has apparently already made an offer for Ajax's star striker Luis Suarez.

At 23-years-old Suarez is one of Europe's most coveted strikers. He scored a remarkable 49 goals in all competitions for Ajax last year and bagged three in the World Cup for Uruguay.

This season, he has hit 11 goals in 22 games this season, but has not scored since the middle of October.

In the meantime, Suarez has also been banned by Ajax for biting a PSV Eindhoven player and coach Martin Jol resigned last week, generating further uncertainty at the Amsterdam club which is already suffering from financial difficulties.

According to Italian website Tuttomercato, Liverpool have already made a €15million offer for Suarez and although Ajax will look for a further €10million to prize their star striker away, he could apparently leave for less if it is to a destination of his choosing.

Anfield boss Hodgson has highlighted the need for a new striker at Liverpool to reduce the goalscoring burden on Fernando Torres . Suarez's top level experience, movement off the ball and ability to play-off an out and out striker makes him a top target

suarez would be replacing torres not partnering him as I think the only thing that was going to keep torres beyond the season was CL football and that (barring a miracle) isn't going to happen.

Torres himself said that CL football wasn't the most important thing. It's improvement.

He'll leave if Roy isn't shown the door or a bunch of new players isn't brought in.
He won't leave for the sake of CL football imho, as his comments clearly shows. He wants us to move in the right direction. NESV have a BIG job to do. If they can't do it, he's off.

Suarez could be partnering Torres alright. Hopefully in a 4-3-3

I hope you're right Mr. Hansern

I don't think you can question his love for the club, but he has to see that we're moving in the right direction and are going to be able to fight for silverware again. Soon.

It won't happen with Roy or without several new players. NESV have it all to do.

I thought they might be talk of hodgson been sacked in today's tabloids but NOTHING?

the press and opposition managers love roy so you wont hear one word from them that puts pressure on him.

Just watched some videos of Suarez. I've decided that it's him I want as our marquee siging in january.

He can bite Phil Neville in the derby.

Any links? I'm unconvinced at the moment.

I can't believe we'd get someone like Suarez in January.

And I'm actually so jaded that I'd probably even put Messi down to fail if we bought him.

Cheers Hansern.

The boy can definitely finish, but most of the defending on those videos was atrocious (most were either rolled easily or backing miles off him). He wouldn't be afforded anywhere near as much space in England.
