Liverpool keen on City trio
26th May 2010 - Media Watch

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is considering moves for three Manchester City players who do not appear to be part of Roberto Mancini's long-term plans.

The Anfield manager is working hard to bring in new additions on a shoestring budget. He has already snapped up Jonjo Shelvey and Milan Jovanovic for next to nothing and now appears ready to tempt stars Nedum Onuoha, Micah Richards and Michael Johnson.

Benitez is keen to add more 'homegrown' players into his squad ahead of the new regulations set to be enforced by the Premier League next season and has therefore earmarked moves for these three Englishman who have all represented their countries at various levels, with defender Richards being the only one of the trio to have earnt full international honours.

The Spaniard has been linked with moves for Michael Johnson for some time now but could consider this summer to be the right time to nab a player who has had a string of problems both and off the field over the past two seasons during which time he has managed just three Premier League starts.

Micah Richards has been fighting for a regular first-team spot for some time now and has been linked with moves away from the club with both Tottenham and Aston Villa reportedly expressing an interest in the player who was a regular in the England set-up when Steve McClaren was at the helm. Nedum Onuoha was a player that Mark Hughes rated highly and the Nigerian-born former England U21 international put pen to paper on a five-year contract last summer but found himself out of the first-team reckoning when Mancini arrived, consigning the defender to just five starts last term.

Whilst Liverpool may not be able to afford moves for all three of the players seemingly deemed 'surplus to requirements' at the City of Manchester Stadium, Rafa will apparently look to pounce for this £22m rated trio this summer, dependent on how much money he can make from offloading some of his squad players.

If we go for Micah Richards we will have spent 39M on right-backs whose defending isn't all that...

Ace.

Oh and City need homegrown players just as much as we do.

There were reports that they'll keep Wright-Phillips and Ireland around just for their quotas, not because they've got much interest in playing them.

I wonder if it's any different for these trio of players. I find it unlikely.

Christopher Oldfield and Robbie Threlfall will leave Liverpool when their contracts expire on June 30.

The young duo - neither of whom have made a competitive first-team appearance - join Fabio Aurelio and David Martin in being released.

Meanwhile, Australian stopper Dean Bouzanis has committed his future until June 2012.

Five others have been offered fresh terms: David Amoo, Sean Highdale, Steven Irwin, Alex Kacaniklic and Andras Simon.

Why have they offered a deal to Andras Simon? Hes fucking shit! Any news on which 16's got apprentice deals DHSC?

Reds targeting Valencia forward?

Liverpool are reportedly looking into bringing Valencia’s giant Serbian striker Nikola Zigic to Anfield, according to CaughtOffside.com. The 6ft 7 striker spent most of last season as a reserve for the Spanish club but manager Unai Emery is unlikely to want to keep the 29 year old even with the sale of David Villa to Barcelona. Like Peter Crouch, Zigic is as capable with the ball at his feet as he is in the air and was a prolific goalscorer back in Serbia before his move to Spain. During his time at Red Star Belgrade he scored an impressive 71 goals in 110 appearances in all competitions during his three year spell at the club before moving to Racing Santander in 2006. After a successful season there, he was purchased by Valencia for £20million. His time at the Mestalla however invariably saw him used as a substitute and he was sent out on loan back to Santander for the 2008/09 season. After another successful spell though, he found himself on the bench once again for Valencia last season and the club would no doubt be prepared to sell the player. According to the website, Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the player and with a price tag of £8-10m, Rafa Benitez may have to do some wheeling and dealing by including Albert Riera in any such deal.

Signed for Birmingham

I'm actually disappointed.

1255 BST: Midfielder Alberto Aquilani, linked with Juventus, has told Italian newspaper Leggo that he wants to stay at Liverpool to make up for his injury-plagued first season following a £20m move from Roma.

1240 BST: Prospective Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho says England midfielders Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are the type of players he will look to bring to the Bernabeu.

Mourinho told Spanish sports daily AS: "I like players in the final part of their careers. Both [Gerrard and Lampard] are great players who always give everything."

Losing Masher and Gerrard in the same summer would be horrible.

Although I can see both wanting to leave.

Simao indicates English interest
28th May 2010 - Media Watch

Atletico Madrid winger Simao Sabrosa has admitted his interest in playing in the Premier League amid reports Liverpool are planning an £8million bid.

The Portugal international has one year left on his contract in Spain and has been linked with a move to Anfield for many years.

Rafa Benitez is understood to be a fan and is in the market for a left winger, while Simao did his reputation no harm when starring in Atletico's Europa League semi-final victory over the Reds.

Liverpool could therefore make a move this summer and the 30-year-old has indicated that he is attracted by the prospect of switching to England.

Simao is quoted as saying in the Daily Star: "Nobody has spoken with me in the last days about this subject.

"I only say that some people in Madrid have suggested that Atletico are preparing my sale, but I don't know too much.

"I have always been interested in playing in the Premier League, but my head is in the World Cup and I have a deal with Atletico."

Unless, of course, the question is:

'Rearrange these letters to make the name of a lightweight, moany, 30-year-old Portuguese player who is too similar to the kind of widemen Liverpool already have: O - M - S - A - I'.

You forgot "slow"

Hes better than Babel, Riera, Leto, Gonzalez and the other players Rafa has bought for the left side. Hes 30 now so £8m for a stop gap? Doubt it.

Simao can fuck off.

Maybe when we were first rumoured to be interested back in good ole 1955

I thought that would make it too easy.

The ridiculous amount of centre halves that we're linked to gives new meaning to a team of Carraghers!

Chelsea have paved the way for Joe Cole's departure from Stamford Bridge by formalising their interest in the Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun, with the Israeli confident a transfer can be completed over the next week.

An opening bid of £4m is understood to have been knocked back by the Merseyside club, though they have offered Chelsea encouragement that an improved offer of about £6m will secure the 30-year-old. Carlo Ancelotti is keen to sign the Israel international after talks with Cole's representative over a new deal reached an impasse, with the midfielder now expected to leave under freedom of contract next month.

Tottenham Hotspur, with a potential Champions League campaign ahead, remain favourites to secure Cole under the Bosman ruling, ending his seven-year stay in south-west London since a £6.6m move from West Ham United. The 28-year-old had hoped to gain an increase on his weekly wage to £100,000, but Chelsea are set upon restructuring financially and did not offer him improved terms.

Cole has not had a regular first?team place at the Double winners under Ancelotti, and Benayoun will have to accept life as a squad player as well. His own fortunes at Liverpool dipped somewhat towards the end of last season to mirror those of the team, with his relationship with the manager, Rafael Benítez, steadily deteriorating to the point where Liverpool effectively sanctioned his departure in the closed season.

The move is surprising given that Benayoun, who had also attracted tentative interest from his former club West Ham United and Spurs, is two years older than Cole in a squad that is already considered to be ageing, though he does have pedigree in the Premier League.

The Israeli anticipates the completion of his move to Stamford Bridge over the next few days having indicated last week while on international duty that Chelsea were keen to sign him. "Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool," he said. "Chelsea will have to pay some £6m, but I believe that, in the end, I'll be moving there."

Daily Mail said:
Barcelona are ready to renew their interest in Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano but it could yet be hindered by their move for Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas.
Barca courted Mascherano a year ago and their need is greater now with defensive midfielder Yaya Toure destined to leave - with Chelsea among his admirers.
However, they know that Liverpool will be looking at close to £30million for the 25-year-old Argentina captain and that will put enormous strain on their budget as even though Toure is expected to command £20m, Arsenal would want more than £40m for Fabregas.

Liverpool also have interest from Chelsea in Mascherano but do not want to sell to Premier League rivals and accept Mascherano's sale may be the easiest solution to their financial troubles

If we sold Torres, Gerrard, Riera, Yossi and Mascherano for 125m could we add say 100m of talent to this >
Reina
Insua
Agger
Skrtel
Carragher
Zorba
Johnson
Degen
Lucas
Aquilani
Babel
Kuyt
Maxi
Ngog

and create a team that could compete?

I think it's more likely the money goes to repaying our debt Oncy.

We'll probably see that team plus some freebies and the yoofs.
