Upson would be a shit signing.
It fits Rafa's recent proclamation that we're always looking out for British players.

I dont know Keni, I thought Upson can be a pretty useful player, just that he's injury prone.
Well that's just it. He's injury prone and given his age, things aren't going to get any better for him on that front. Plus I don't think he's good enough to justify the bother.
Plus he's a cunting centre back!!!! We've got 4 capable ones and 2 younguns behind them. We also have no budget. Upson would be a head slapping continuance of our last two years ridiculously innapropriate transfer activity.

We've been linked with far too many centre backs. I have a bad feeling.

I dont know if it has been mentioned already, but should make an offer to Henry?

West Ham are offering him 75,000 a week. Would it be worth it to match that and bring him to Liverpool? We all know he's a closet fan and he'd be a decent back up option. Much better than anything we have at the moment.

He's a cheating twat but I reckon he could be good for us.

Liverpool FC boss Rafa Benitez wants to bring to Real Madrid legend Raul to Anfield this summer. The Spanish legend may be granted leave from his lucrative Bernabeu contract raising the prospect of the Merseyside club signing him on a free transfer. (Daily Mail)

Why to the Daily Mail wheel this story EVERY summer? It's tiresome

Depends how much he's got left. It isn't a good sign that West Ham are the only club who've shown an interest so far.

Chelsea eye another Double as Blues ready bid for Liverpool duo Yossi Benayoun and Javier Mascherano

Chelsea are weighing up a double move for Liverpool's Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun.

The Double winners realise Liverpool are vulnerable to offers and have earmarked the duo to reinforce their ageing squad with Michael Ballack and Joe Cole expected to leave.

Liverpool do not want to sell to Chelsea but if the financial offer is bold enough they may have little choice with Rafa Benitez's budget almost non-existent.

Mascherano has shelved talks on a new contract while Benayoun is hoping to discuss a move to Stamford Bridge for around £6m this week.

Benayoun, 30, said: 'Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool. Chelsea will have to pay some £6m but I believe that in the end I'll be moving there.'

I can't believe he would say that. Also, why the fuck would they want him?
I am scratching my head reading that. Yossi seemed like a guy who would not make statements like that.

Very odd from Yossi. I really like him as a player. Brendan who seemed to hate him for no reason will be shocked to see the Champions want him. I wonder what role they have in mind for him? Replacement for Joe Cole obv. but I wonder would he get regular football there.

yossi is worth more than 6 mill but we've never had a system which accommodated him, and he's been shown in a poor light because of it.

Benayoun really must hate Benitez and want to leave to come out with something as bold as that.

If it's true, and providing Rafa stayed, with this statement Yossi has burnt all his bridges at this club.

It could get worse.

Liverpool are set to make an enquiry for Manchester City left-back Sylvinho before he signs a new deal at Eastlands, we understand.

Sylvinho joined Man City last summer on a free transfer from Barcelona and is out of contract this summer.

City have reportedly offered the Brazilian a new deal with Roberto Mancini keen on keeping the veteran.

Mancini said: "Sylvinho is a fantastic man and player who always works very well. He is important for us."

However, Liverpool will also make an enquiry in the next 48 hours to see if Sylvinho is open to a move away.

Fabio Aurelio is out of contract and with no sign of a new deal for the left-back, Sylvinho has been made a target in the hope he could be a temporary fix.

Emiliano Insua started most games for the Reds last season, however Rafa Benitez believes the youngster could learn a lot from 36-year-old Sylvinho.

The Anfield outfit could be too late, however, with Sylvinho expected to pen a new deal to remain at City

Nah, what we really need right now is another RB who isn't very good at defending.

That would be boss.

caughtoffside.com claims Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is set to launch a £12 million bid for Manchester City defender Micah Richards.

Despite missing out on Champions League football, the attraction of regular football may be enough for Richards to make the move, after seeing his career stall in the past season through injury and competition for places at Eastlands.

It is speculated that the likes of Phillip Degen, Yossi Benayoun and Albert Riera will be offloaded to raise the required fee for Richards.

What a fun offseason we're having.

Despite being broke, we're linked to mediocre players at ridiculous sums.

Micah Richards isn't very good.

He reminds me of Djibril Cisse; Big, strong, powerful, athletic, lightning quick, wants to win.

Touch like a fucking baby elephant.

If we get richards and move glen johnson up as a winger instead of kuyt id be happy. As for benayoun, i wouldnt have expected something like that from him

I'd rather we didn't sell him, but i won't exactly be gutted if he does leave.

Hopefully we can squeeze another couple of mill out of them.

Reds targeting Valencia forward?

Liverpool are reportedly looking into bringing Valencia’s giant Serbian striker Nikola Zigic to Anfield, according to CaughtOffside.com. The 6ft 7 striker spent most of last season as a reserve for the Spanish club but manager Unai Emery is unlikely to want to keep the 29 year old even with the sale of David Villa to Barcelona. Like Peter Crouch, Zigic is as capable with the ball at his feet as he is in the air and was a prolific goalscorer back in Serbia before his move to Spain. During his time at Red Star Belgrade he scored an impressive 71 goals in 110 appearances in all competitions during his three year spell at the club before moving to Racing Santander in 2006. After a successful season there, he was purchased by Valencia for £20million. His time at the Mestalla however invariably saw him used as a substitute and he was sent out on loan back to Santander for the 2008/09 season. After another successful spell though, he found himself on the bench once again for Valencia last season and the club would no doubt be prepared to sell the player. According to the website, Aston Villa are also said to be interested in the player and with a price tag of £8-10m, Rafa Benitez may have to do some wheeling and dealing by including Albert Riera in any such deal.

We are trying to get the serbian national team strike partner ship? Might aswell sign pantelic from ajax on the cheap too 😉 no thanks!!

I want to hear links to other Valencia players such as Juan Mata and David Silva, i'd even take Ever Banega links but I draw the line at Zigic. He would be a nice plan B but not what we are looking for IMO. He doesn't seem happy on the Valencia bench and if Torres stays then he would only be left to sit on our bench.

I would rather use the 8-10 million to buy a creative attacking wide player. I want back up for Torres but is a 10million target man the answer?

Zigic for Riera plus money according to goal.com

Valencia striker Nikola Zigic is interested in a move to the Premier League and has garnered the interest of a number of English clubs including Liverpool.

Reds manager Rafa Benitez is keen to make an offer to los Che that could kill two birds with one stone. He is pondering a swap deal that would send out of sorts winger Albert Riera to Spain in return for los Che's towering striker, according to AS.

If such a deal were to materialise, Liverpool would be obligated to pay an additional €3-4 million in addition to Riera.

Other teams have their sights set on Zigic as well, which could play a role in the proceedings should Liverpool drag their feet. Aston Villa and Birmingham are two possible suitors for the towering Serbian as well.

Liverpool target Diego Tardelli
By Rory Smith
Published: 7:00AM BST 25 May 2010

Liverpool are believed to be monitoring Brazil striker Diego Tardelli ahead of lodging a £6 million offer. The 25 year-old, formerly with Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven, has been named as one of coach Dunga’s seven back-up players for his 23-man squad for the World Cup after impressing for the Belo Horizonte side this season.

There remain obstacles to Rafael Benítez making his third signing of the summer, though, beyond West Ham also being interested.

How much money Liverpool will make available to the Spaniard remains unclear, though it is likely he will be forced to cut his squad significantly before reinvesting all, or part, of any funds raised.

The club’s co-owner, Tom Hicks, took the Texas Rangers into voluntary bankruptcy on Monday to speed up his plans to sell the baseball franchise, although this has no impact on his plans to offload Liverpool.

Liverpool will unveil a plaque on Wednesday to the 39 victims of the Heysel disaster in front of dignitaries from both the Premier League club and Juventus. The 25th anniversary of the tragedy

Liverpool FC career over for Fabio Aurelio
May 25 2010 by Dominic King, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today gave Fabio Aurelio a rousing send-off as he revealed the Brazilian’s four-year Liverpool career has reached an end.

Aurelio’s contract expires a week today but, as expected, it will not be renewed after an agreement on new terms could not be reached.

The Reds were happy to offer Aurelio, who has suffered with chronic fitness problems, a ‘pay as you play’ deal but the Brazilian wanted the security of a longer-term arrangement.

Clubs in Europe and Brazil have been monitoring Aurelio’s situation and he is unlikely to be short of options when it comes to him taking the next step in his career this summer.

Benitez, though, has admitted Anfield will be a slightly poorer place without the 30-year-old, as he holds him in the highest regard as a person and a player.

“Fabio’s contract is nearly finished and he is going to leave us,†said Benitez, who brought Aurelio to Anfield on a Bosman in June 2006 after previously working with him at Valencia.

“We had been trying to work something out with regards an extension but it was a pity that we couldn’t. He has given us absolutely fantastic service.

“Fabio is a top professional, a great player and a really good lad. I mean every single word I say about him.

“It has been a pleasure having him here and we really will miss himâ€

Though much was made about the impact injuries to Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard had on Liverpool’s campaign, Aurelio’s prolonged absences were just as crucial.

He missed the start of the season after suffering a freak knee injury playing football with his children last summer.

And he never figured after February 28 when he damaged his thigh during the 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers.

But that was indicative of the way things went for him on Merseyside – every time he looked set to build up a head of steam, he was cruelly struck down.

Never more was that apparent than when he ruptured his Achilles tendon against PSV Eindhoven in April 2007, a problem which ultimately deprived him of a place in the Champions League final.

“The one problem we had with Fabio was that he suffered too many injuries and it was such a pity because he has great quality,†said Benitez.

“When he was in the team, we were always to play the ball out from the back and keep it because he uses possession so well.

“With Fabio being out so much, it meant that we had to use (Emiliano) Insua more than we would have liked and that was not easy for him.â€

The highlight of Aurelio’s time on Merseyside was the stunning free-kick he scored in the 4-1 demolition of Manchester United in March 2009 but Benitez will remember him for much more.

“You can say things about players,†said the Reds’ boss.

“But with Fabio, you are talking about an amazing erson who gave 100 per cent all the time. We wish him all the best.â€

I've never heard Benitez be so complimentary about a footballer before. I like Aurelio, and it's a shame about his injury record, but to give him a more eulogistic farewell than Sami, Riise, Finnan et al seems a bit odd.

He always spoke highly of Aurelio. When Fabio joined Rafa claimed he was the best passer of a ball that he had the pleasure of working with.

He didn't sign those three.

When Sami left Rafa was full of praise for him, calling him the “perfect professional†amongst other things. He also offered him the chance to join our backroom team, so i think it's safe to say that he fully appreciated Sami.
