Theo Walcott discussion

Although I haven't watched much of the Arse lately, so I haven't seen how he's been playing, I've always figured that they'd end up selling him to some smaller club, who'd turn him into a striker, and he'd end up doing quite well.

He's pacey, he can finish, and his end product isn't that great as he's just not that aware or intelligent a footballer, no?

Seems to me it'd work out alright for him.

Incidentally, does anybody know any Gooners that rate him, cos I don't think I do

I know one who thinks he has talent, but has sold himself short because he's never really accepted playing on the right rather than down the middle, where he thinks he should play (and where my Gooner mate doesn't rate him BTW - says he's never looked the part when it's been tried).

Sound a bit like Babel syndrome that, we tried that too and it didn't really pan out. I like Walcott though, I'd have him for the right price.

has super pace - check
scores goals - check
can beat players - check
young and can improve - check

simple - buy him. we will improve us and we have no one like that in our team!

Every Arsenal fan I know thinks hes over rated. They dont want him.

I think hes under rated and at 23 is going to improve for the next 5 years.

Hes done his growing up in the first team of one of the biggest teams in Europe. So hes been judged harshly at times. Hes NOW at an age when an Arsenal or Liverpool should be looking at him.
Van persie says he wouldnt have half the goals he has without the work Theo does.

Anyhting under 12m id be happy.

The only issue I have with Walcott is his level of technical skill on the ball. It seems to be his weakest link and yet the very same thing that appears to be most valued in Rodgers' system.

I'm ambivalent up to 10m. Isn't there some young south american with sexy skills out there to discover?

I dunno mate. Probably.
Im just saying hes 23. Theres lots to come from Walcott. People forget hes a kid.

Im completely with you Herr. People write him off so quickly, yet he's young, going to improve and got a goal scoring and assisting record better than Nani, Mata and Young last season.

I think because hes been round for ever people dont think of him as a 23 year old. Hes younger than Nani, Valencia, Mata, Young etc
He might never be a world beater but he has plenty of time to develop.
I would happy to sign him.

I don't agree, I think if you're poor technically at 23 you'll be that way forever. When his pace goes he'll be a very average player.

Hes not poor technically at all. He often OFTEN makes poor decisions. That can be coached.

Exactly, take advantage of this negative vibe about him to sign him for a bargain, £9million would be exactly that, a massive bargain.

I think the worst thing about Walcott was that creepy pre-match embrace Henry used to give him, just hugging for ages and ages. It was the most sickening thing I've ever seen on a football pitch, and I include Stewart Downing in that.

Not enough people listen to you mate!

Walcott is like a Ryan Babel without the brains

I don't rate him, never have, apart from his ability to constantly fool people he's better than the average player with pace that he really is.

He's exceptional at that.

It would not work signing him, and anyway - no matter what winger we sign, no liverpool supporter will ever be happy.

Sinclair can beat a man with skill though. Walcott doesn't have that. He uses his pace to get past people or one twos etc. I do think Walcott has improved over the last 12 months but I really would like a wide player that when faced with a fullback isn't limited to kick and rush and a pass back.

I can't quite believe we're back to the "better than what we have" argument after last summer either. Do people never learn?

What does it matter if our winger beats a man with skill or pace? I don't care as long as he beats him.

Sweet Baby Jesus if we had a winger who could get past a player...

Bellamy is a decent example of a player at 33 and yet very pacey.

If we buy Walcott now at 23 who the fuck cares about when he's pace goes, he's just started his career.

Astounding. Did you say something similar about Downing last summer ?

Who gives a fuck when his pace goes ? You realise we buy players for more than just next season ? We get fucking saddled with them for years and as such we should contemplate what they'll be in years 2,3 and 4 of a contract when deciding whether to buy them and at what price. (This is all very simple, I know - but it's rare anybody thinks about anything other than what the player adds to the team right now)

The Bellamy example is one extreme and you can't presume it applies to everyone. Michael Owen is an example of a player that was finished as a top level player by about 26 when his pace was gone. The reality is that a players physical peak is generally around age 25, it's often earlier for players with explosive pace like it was for Owen. They rarely get quicker as they get to their thirties. Plenty of players last at the top after their pace has gone, but they tend to be intelligent and very good technically - not qualities people associate with Walcott.

As it is I'd be alright with signing him for now at the right price, but I'd be looking to sell him after he has a couple of seasons under his belt with us.

No, I didnt. But I did say that Downing wont decline as quickly as you were saying. This decline theory of yours isnt as clear cut as you think.

He's 23. Of cours we dont buy players for 1-3 seasons. Owen is an extreme in the other way as you say Bellamy.

We have no idea about when or if his pace will "go". But thats a risk you have to take no? Borini could break his leg tomorrow and never play again, same thing.

So, no why give a fuck. If he was Dempseys age sure, but at 23 its no concern for us at this point.
