Ultimately, Lucas + Spearing in the middle of the park isn't going to do it, regardless of the opposition and the responsibility for that lies on Roy. I'm far from against him and am determined to support him as he performs his job but, Carling Cup or not, that combination is lacking, well, everything. I didn't manage to see the game but it sounds like we were shit all over. Some players like Jovanovic + N'Gog + Agger will be getting significant first team action this season and need to play like they deserve it. Some, like Babel, are getting their final chances. And others, like Wilson and Kelly, are promising but very inexperienced.
While it was far from our first team on the pitch, it is the manager's job to put out a team with some degree of chemistry and give them an effective tactical scheme to work with. It doesn't sound like that happened yesterday and this was one of my major problems with Rafa's reign: the first team, when everyone was healthy, worked reasonably well but, when resting players due to injury or opting to play the squaddies, we look like a second division Armenian team. This was one of my real hopes for Roy's tenure: that he would play some more of the youth/younger players (which he is showing signs of doing) and that they wouldn't look totally shit when he did, due to either their own abilities or the tactics/lineup selected. Moreover, Roy doesn't seem to be making effectives substitutions as yet either. Hope he can learn fast what it takes to run a squad with more than just vague aspirations for Champions League qualification.
