Shevchenko, Kaka, Dossena, Aquilani, Veron, Di Vaio, Ibrahimovic, Mutu, Crespo (perhaps harsh to name him) etc.

Is there a worse league to sign big money players from?

Given that they are both strong leagues it is odd that players who come from Italy to England don't tend to do especially well. Generally its the same in the other direction too.

I'm not sure that last bit's right TBH. Not many go to Italy from here, but - with one or two exceptions - those who do go haven't done too badly.

Re: Re: The worst league to sign a player from?

I think it's more italians coming over. Sure there are other nationality flops from italy, but by fuck italians aren't half shit in this league. Not many break the mould (but I know some do)

THe one thing I noticed about your list Kenny is that it doesn't include that many Italians ... In fact, none of them can be considered the creme de la creme.

Is that comment intended to defend the Italian players?

I wasn't suggesting that Italian players do not have quality and generally speaking it's hard to tell how well they travel because not many of them leave Italy.

Serie A does seem to be a difficult league to buy from however.

Fair enough Jules but i can't think of many successes over there.

Rush, Ince, Gazza, Keane, Walker all went there. None were great really.

Souness and Platt both did pretty well though granted

Rushie was a flop (should never have gone in the first place) but Ince and Gazza on the other hand did pretty well, and I remember someone saying about Keane that he was actually shaping up OK and would have got his chance if he'd stayed longer. Wilkins did quite well too (and though I never rated him I wasn't too surprised by that, as I could see his crabwise game being better suited there than here). Liam Brady played well out there also, and even Blissett had a good start, till defenders got wise to him. Some would add "and until Milan realised they'd signed the wrong player" - I couldn't possibly comment. 😉

Yes yes yes, we all know of the success stories from serie A. But it tends to be players from there who make hte most expensive flops or can't settle

Henry and Viera

Good examples - I could only think of Zidane and Ronaldo earlier.

Besides Zola, there were a few other good Italian players who did well enough - Lombardo, Di Canio, Di Matteo, Cudicini, Ravanelli, Vialli. Twilight of their careers for Lombardo and Vialli I think, but still did okay.
