The who should we sign in January thread

Only a month away now. If Milner's injury is bad, and we think Thiago & Naby are also going to be out for a chunk I wonder whether we might look to recall Grujic from loan? We are becoming very light on bodies in the middle!

Nah, Grujic is done based on what he wrote about Adrian. He's gonna get the Sakho treatment.

Indeed. I still had hopes for Grujic before that nasty little episode and it's led me to suspect his exclusion may have been due to issues of character rather than ability all along.

LIVERPOOL CAN SIGN SCHUURS FOR £27M
Liverpool
can sign Ajax centre-back Perr Schuurs if they offer £27m for the 21-year-old, says De Telegraaf.
The Premier League champions are short of central defenders at present following the serious knee injuries sustained by both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez this season.
Schuurs's current Ajax deal runs until the summer of 2022.

I'd only sign Schuurs if they gave us £27m to take him. He's the Dutch Lovren.

Despite his average performance yesterday I think he can become a really good defender.
He's still only 21 years old.
Our current defenders were a bit meh at that age as well.

Yeah, I might be going over the top given his age. I just don't rate him. I don't rate De Ligt either, for what it's worth, for the same reasons.

He's rash, makes poor decisions, dives in, lacks concentration, has terrible positioning... he has the physical attributes, but everything else was all over the place.

As Maldini once said, "if I have to make a tackle, I've already made a mistake." Schuurs was constantly last ditch last night.

It's incredibly rare for CBs to be good at that young an age. You can count on your fingers the number of CBs who are starter material at age 21. It's a position where experience is vital.

I think given the long term injuries to van Dijk and Gomez, we might indeed be in for a younger CB. Upamecano seems to be everyone's favourite, but it wouldn't surprise me if we're looking at someone like Schuurs, especially given that he has just 18 months left on his contract.

The other players I've already mentioned are Milenkovic at Fiorentina and Luiz Felipe at Lazio, both of whom also have 18 months left on their deals.

Another player we might look at is Jason Denayer at Lyon. Formerly a trialist here, he ended up signing for City a few years ago. City loaned him all over the place, and he actually played with van Dijk at Celtic and had a good partnership going with him.

He's blossomed into a good defender in his own right now, and I think he might be ready for a step up again. Still only 25.

Most German posters I see seem to rate the other RBL CB, Konate, whose even younger at 21, and much taller at 1.93 (to 1.85), more than Upamecano. Obviously Upamecano has the better name though.

Konate has been the player I want us to sign. His value has decreased somewhat after his injury last year, but back again now. A big yes!

Denayer is another one of those players who look very good in possession but isnt really a good defender. 1.84 aswell. No thank you.

Pau Torres is also one to watch.

Yeah, that is true. I just think Schuurs is too rash and lacking in composure and positional awareness.

While I wouldn't sign him, I think you are a bit too harsh.
He had a decent enough game, and was up against Mane...that is not an easy task.

I think its extremely harsh given his young age, and the fact that Ajax play with an insanely high risk at the back. They were bombing forward leaving the central defenders isolated and alone against our front three. Even Maldini would look out of place then...

I thought he was poor, and anything good he did usually came about from him racing back after either giving it away or being caught out of position. I thought he was poor in the other fixture too. He does the eye catching stuff, but he needs better basics.

If we are making a signing in Jan it really needs to be somebody who is capable of going into the team pretty quickly. A prospect who might be ready in 6 months isnt going to be of much value given the immediate concerns over injures.

Long term we probably need one of each depending on Matips future
