The "We can still mount a title challenge" thread

It would have been a massive confidence/morale boost to have won today and weirdly I think we all thought we would, although why we did I don't know.
The only thing that's kept me from killing myself (aside from the fact we stayed ahead of Birmingham on goal difference) is the run of games we have between now and playing Arsenal again. We've got 3 of the shit followed by back to backs vs villa and spurs, and I really hope our lads feel like they owe those two a beasting, followed by an fa cup tie and then 4 more against the shit. So 9 league games and an fa cup tie, I think if we could go unbeaten in these games we should be in far better shape confidence wise going into the tail end. Bolton, Wigan, hull, stoke etc must be put to the sword

With Gerrard, Torres and Glenjo back fit. Combined with the intro of Aquilani, I'm convinced things can only get better.

I'm ignoring that it's the middle of December like.

How can you say we have a great squad when there is no adequate striker other than Torres, no fit, decent CM other than Mascherano and not one player good enough to play LB or LM?
[/quote]

You know what Bren? That's it in a nutshell, we have been mugged somewhere down the line

There were enough positives out of an excellent first half performance for me to have a shred of optimism left. We should have been 2/3 up by the break and were then undone by a freak own-goal and yet another Arselickin screamer. Of course, we struggled to create anything in the last half hour but such is our current deflated confidence.

A couple of big performances in the next couple of weeks (we'll batter someone anytime soon) and we can still start the new year in a positive vein, ready to kick on up the table.

Best forty five minutes of football we've played all season followed by their best forty five, unlucky fucking OG and a blatant peno not given..... and that little rusky cunt again.

Regardless it was a horrible fucking result no doubt but i swear yesterday for at least a while in the first half i was looking at possibly the most dangerous fron pairing in world footy... Torres will score more of those than he'll miss...

Its cunt we are all fucked off with it but we will start winning one day im sure of it.

Why exactly? Posession and poor oposition (we were playing well, but they really made us look better) don't win games, goals do and you can't get a goal if you don't work the keeper. We had 2 shots on target the whole game; Nando's uber weak effort and the goal. I know there was the penalty shout (I still think that'd be 50/50 with most refs), but we can't rely on pens.

Simply because Torres should have scored with that chance and the penalty against Gerrard was nailed on. That plus our goal makes three.

They could not have complained if they'd gone in at half time 2 down.

Nice to see a thread with some support in it!

In times like these, it's the little things that make me feel better and remember why I support this great club. Anfield belting out YNWA in the final minutes of our sorry CL campaign was one of those moments.

Gerrard had a very good chance too.

Eh? When?

Fair enough we coulda been 2 up if Torres had put that away (forget the penalty shout, you get some you don;t on others, it's what you get from regular play that wins games 99% of the time), but that was it for the whole game, 2 shots on target.

You can't say "forget the peno", because, altough you're right that you shouldn't count on them (going into a game), when they're THAT blatant, with the ref standing 10 feet away, you have to expect to get it. It's robbery that we didn't get it.

I wanted it as much as anybody, yet I still don't think we were robbed given the circumstances (lost control of the ball (a ref's best friend), Gerrard throwing his arms up, and less than 15 minutes played so the game hadn't settled yet), hard done by yes, robbed nah.

I seem to recall Stevie missing the target from around the penalty spot.

He went past the defender, then got upended. How is that not a penalty?

What has throwing your arms around and the time of day got to do with anything?

If you're on about the shot that was blocked by Song then that was never a gimme, there was 3 blue shirts and Almunia between net and Stevie.

It should have been a penalty, but I wasn't talking about whether we should have got it (of course we should) I was talking about were we likely to and the answer is it would be 50/50 with most refs IMO, with Howard 'cockbyte' Webb in charge there was no fucking chance.

Gerrard waving his arms when he has a bit of a reputation as a diver is silly, and how often do you see a penalty (unless 10000% stonewall) given in the first 20 minutes (never mind in the 12th minute)?

Wenger agrees:

"I believe Liverpool are a good side and when they get their confidence back they can beat anyone in the league," the Gunners' boss said.

"With Gerrard and Torres back fit and Aquilani starting to play, many teams will drop points here.

"In the first half they were very impressive but at the moment Liverpool don't have the confidence they had last year.

"It's difficult to play for 90 minutes at the pace they played in the first half. And because they didn't score the second goal there was doubt in their minds at half-time. The game wasn't won.

"They played a pace above us in the first half and won all the 50-50s. To only be 1-0 down at half-time was a good score for us. We got lucky with our first goal but after that we controlled the game.

"The fear was in Liverpool's camp in the second half."
