Dantes:

In the statement that emerged from Anfield, it was asserted that the club had gone over the facts of the case and concluded "that Luis Suárez did not commit any racist act". The Uruguayan forward's defence included the claim that in his native country the Spanish terms referring to skin colour are used in a matter-of-fact way during amicable conversations. That may be true, to some extent or other, but it could be said that even though he arrived in Groningen from Montevideo in 2006 without a word of English or Dutch, he has lived in Europe long enough – five years in the multicultural Netherlands, one year in equally diverse Liverpool – to know how to avoid causing unnecessary offence.

Suárez has not been convicted of being a racist. To prove or demolish such a contention would require rather more than the 40 hours of deliberation undertaken, over four days of hearing and sifting evidence, by the panel. He was simply convicted of insulting Evra during the course of an exchange in which, as he admitted, he used the word "negro". The way Evra heard it, the term was used to add weight to the insult. The panel must have had good reasons for agreeing, while declining to accept the view that there is a cultural context in which the use of such a term – particularly as part of an exchange of abuse – may be acceptable
Yeah that's the same word. Are you linking that to how the word was used in America? Cos that's nonsense as has been explained in the last thread

I'm not ignoring you. Just getting to it...

I think I might have told you this before, but anyway - it's vague - I'm not pretending there were any practising Jews in my family in my lifetime, but we believe my father's mother's father was part Jewish.
Interesting ... how do you guys find out? Did people make fun of you after you told them? To be honest, I was racially abused a few times in England - I was always called p*** b/c I had very dark skin when I was younger ... When I played footy for my boarding school (Jewish), one kid told me, "Hitler should have finished you lot off." How the hell does a 13-14 year old kid say that kind of stuff?
That might not have been offensive where he came from Wizzy. You should be (even) more tolerant.
I didn't respond, or do anything mate ... I don't think I really understood the severity of the comment, despite having already been in Dachau and talked to numerous Holocaust survivors. Maybe it's for the better, I was a pretty light weight kid back then - probably would have got my ass kicked anyways! 😉

When I was in London my first business trip a few years ago, one woman in our company (of Sri Lankan descent) told me how it must be fun to be Jewish because "You guys control everything with money, the banks, Hollywood, everything." I smiled and said, "Really?" and that was the end of that conversation. I tend not to react mate ... What am I really going to do? Change their opinion? Bother arguing with them? For what? To prove what?

The fact is it doesn't matter that they are different words, they were both spoken in Spanish and their meaning is not racist. Direct translation is not appropriate in any language. Just because one of the words means something else in English does not matter.

If he had used the word or something similar while speaking English, I don't think anyone could have any complaints about the verdict or the sentence.

Famous Jewish Joke I know is 'Father Lend me 600 pounds?' and his Father says 400 pounds? What do you want 200 pounds for?

hahaha! actually, i used a variation of that on a mate of mine when we were drunk and asking each other film questions for money. he was about £20 up but every time he won another i'd be like, 'ok, so that's just £8 you owe me now..'etc. not exactly funny, but it worked....

never paid him a penny.

It's reported to be spanish. Probably because Suarez responded in Spanish, and "sacuda" seems much less of a mouthful and more believable than "you south american".

yes. but that's not exactly a fair reason for believing Evra spoke in spanish.

What does it actually mean in Spanish?

And dont worry Rosco, Im bearing in mind that Suarez claims that he didnt hear it.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

Its a derogatory name for people from (what was) the Spanish Colonies, who aren't real Spanish people.

I was told by a Spanish friend that its like being called 'a useless immigrant cunt of little worth'

It isn't just them. That sarky cnut Saggers on TalkSh!te was saying similar things last night, as was Collymore (though he stopped because he was getting that much stick for it from LFC fans on Twitter). Basically these people (who mostly aren't really thick) either want to sh!t-stir or just can't be bothered to think the whole thing through. Or both.
Or maybe you know it's actually how they feel?
"Feel" being the operative word - don't bother thinking about it, just go with your first kneejerk reaction. This is too serious an issue for that.
