so the word 'coloured' is now a racial slur? since when?
I was wondering that too, but was afraid to say it.

If there is this much confusion about acceptable terms in our own language imagine the confusion of a foreigner (say a Uruguayan).

This is a mess and a godsend for the pedants/self-righteous/politically correct.
Coloured is probably the best description for everyone. Let's face it who can deny that they're not coloured?
Billy Connolly reckons Scottish people are a sort of pale blue.

After a night out, I look pretty green.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

I must admit the distinction bemuses me. In the US it's still common to say 'people of colour'.

Yeah exactly.

Hense NAACP.

So in UK a black man must be referred to as black but across the pond is OK to refer to a black man as coloured. This racism stuff is very confusing.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

I think Anita got it right - "coloured" is a bit dated. Back in the 1950's it was considered more polite than "black," for whatever reason. Then in the 1960's it fell out of favour, and "black" made a comeback - but this change passed many people by - including Alan Hansen apparently. 🙂

there needs to be a 'racial slur bulletin board'

It's news to me also. Sufficient confusion has been created to enable anyone to allege anything.

1970: You will see a coloured cleaner working down a man hole.

2011: You will see a Black Person of undescribed gender enviromentally laboring in a person hole ....

I agree we need to be very vigilant to keep up with the "right" terminology.

As Shakespeare said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet!"

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

I'm surprised anyone didn't know that about "coloured" to be honest. I thought everyone would have been aware of that. But yeah, it's more dated than offensive, and Hansen wasn't been derogatory when he used it.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

I'll always call a blackboard a blackboard. Cos it's black. It's not negative like black spot on a motorway, it's just factual.

I remember being told i couldn't refer to black bin bags as such, apparently they were now merely refuse sacks, and ending up in the headmasters office in school, where he promptly agreed with me and sent the teacher packing.

Sometimes people do go too far. Another example is 'brownout', it simply doesnt go brown when the power is cut, it gets dark, or goes black!

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

It still seems odd that a player here will get angry being called 'coloured' but then, if he goes to, say, LA Galaxy, he'll be expected to tolerate being called 'a person of color'.

I used to have a colleague who even tried to stop everyone from using the word 'denigrate'.

Exactly illustrates the confusion over terminology and intent.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

And yet if refuse bags were white and people referred to them as white bags, no one has an issue!

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

That Daily Mail report is a mini classic for its compressed cynicism.
Fellow pundit Lee Dixon looked on in disdain
Dixon always looks like that.

2011: You will see a non Caucasian of unknown gentle working in a big hole normally in or beside the road for the benefit of environment upkeep.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

Best to take some things you hear like this with a pinch of salt though.

I saw a list of so called PC gone mad stories from the Daily Mail and almost every one was either made up or massively exaggerated. They fucking love making Shit like that up, like the bullShit story about putting indian style toilets in a shopping centre.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

hansen - 'coloured'

no intent and we can let that slide

atkinson - 'he's a lazy n****r'

no intent but I can kinda see why he was sacked

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

So the FA has publicly stated that Suarez will face an 8 match ban due to racism. They however dont know why he face such a long ban cause Coulding needs three weeks to send his report. How the hell can they know the punishment reflects the damage?

So if Suarez sued them for false accusations they had to say: Yes we will ban him. No we dont know why?

They do know that there are people at Guantanamo that is actually not terrorists but someone told ild George W there is sine chance they could be?

Pricks. Cunts. Arseholes. What the fuck happened to fair play and dignity.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

No intent?! Hmmm. I tend to disagree, the use of the word lazy as a prefix to me makes the intent clear.

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

I bet there are no coloured or hispanic people in the whole FA. Probably none under 60 either. And obviously none that can use a computer and a scanner. How the hell did this organization manage to create a web page in the first place.?

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

The Mail has now altered its report about Hansen. Dixon is no longer said to have looked on with 'disdain'. It now says: "Dixon looked on in apparent unease".

Re: The Suarez/Evra Racism Row (continued)

I guess they allocated a few million for each page, then had a few young tech savvy family members create a business to make websites, and paid them to do it.

What exactly do you mean by "no intent"?

Maybe not militantly racist, but nevertheless spreading around the idea that it's ok or normal to generalise black people as "lazy".

I think it's disgusting, personally.
