The preseason thread

He’s been with the team for 6 days and played 60 mins in makeshift pre season line ups.
It would be some achievement if he was on the same wavelength as the others.
No arguments here, but sometimes people come in and slot in instantaneously (Diaz, Salah), other times they take a bit more time to adapt (Robbo, Firmino), it looks like Nunez is the latter, but considering the amount of extra work Klopp expects in that CF position, it's hardly a surprise, but it's something worth mentioning.

Sorting out this deal out before preseason was super important because of this, if we'd tried to haggle later in the window like we have done in the past, and he ended up joining in late August, it would have been nearly impossible for him to be effective until much part way through the season, however giving him a full preseason under his belt to grow into the team will let him start the season at full speed.

680k views in 2 hours. People can't work for him to fail. Hope he proves doubters (admittedly, I am one of them 😳) wrong.

It just shows how fickle other teams fans are. Liverpool fans have probably made the same for Lukaku and most of the Utd players.

He had some nice moments today, decent link up play with Salah and a good chance to score.
Most important part is getting the chances and the goals will come.
Good movement but so out of sync with the rest of the lads. That will take time.

I am not sure what people are worried about.

Albeit I only watched 2 games but Nunez has shown he is a willing runner, has a good first touch which gives him the space to get his shots off, and he keeps them on target.

He is bound to get goals if he keeps this up.

Anyway - back to the important discussion.

One of the things I appreciated about Changi was the ease and speed of transfer. I used to fly in from Heathrow and have ~40 minutes to get my connecting flight to Penang. That in itself had me nervous the first time I did it, but when I landed in Changi, 10 minutes late, and saw the Penang flight was from a different terminal I assumed I was fucked ... 10 minutes later I'm boarding the Penang flight. Never worried about it again, after that.

My company never paid business class so I was always in economy, but I had enough miles with Star Alliance to get in the other lounge (I think Silver Kris was Business and, counter intuitively, Gold something was for the frequent fliers like me). On the way home I would have a 3-4 hour layover, so would land in the lounge, start off on something like tiger beer (4 or 5 to get me loose), then get a plate of chicken noodles and a few glasses of white wine (this was where the drink became merely acceptable as the choice was some German filth of a standard Sauvignon ..so I put up with the latter). When I finished eating I would hit the Johnnie Walker black label (again the best they had to offer, but OK at a pinch). Finally I would roll onto the flight back to Heathrow, have a few more wines & whiskies then sleep all the way and land at 5am feeling like shite. A fried breakfast in Heathrow would generally revive me enough to hop onto Aer Lingus to get home.

Only once did I manage to get an upgrade on the Singapore-Heathrow flight (it was on Lufthansa, normally I was Singapore Airlines who don't give them out on that route), so was excited to see how much better the SilverKris lounge was .. but my flight from Penang was delayed so I only had a 40 minute layover ... still managed to get 15 mins in the lounge, but not enough to try everything.

To pick up another thread, the best business lounge I was ever in is the Turkish Airlines one in Istanbul. Its on two floors, has a library, a billiard room, a cinema, a grand piano, a golf driving range, a wall full of Xboxes, PlayStations etc., the best showers I've seen in an airport and about 50 bars and food buffets. When we went to Kyiv I bought flights for me & two mates on airmiles (as far as Odessa, at least) and got business class on the way back via Istanbul. I took the lads into the lounge & these two 55-60 year old scals had eyes on stalks the whole time. Needless to say we got our money's worth out of the free drink & food.

I've never been in a middle east airport, so can't comment

Sadly, I moved away from my multinational some years ago and since have only worked for Irish companies with mostly Irish markets, so have missed out on the junkets for years now.

I fully admit that was really fucking boring, but I'm only competing with a pre-season friendly for your attention, so it will do,

Tbh the lounges are far from the best thing about Changi. It's extremely stress free. It's way over-staffed, and people who work there actually like working in an airport. There are tons of child friendly things to do, and they have (strangely) the best and cleanest toilets in Singapore. Some of the nursing rooms look like hotel rooms (so the wife tells me).

A part of me wonders whether this thing actually makes money, and what the carbon footprint is.

Changi was also the first place I saw a bee printed on the urinal. Apparently they have them at Schipol too. Maybe MBBR can elaborate

Yep most of it's down to getting to know the team, I also think he looks a little nervous, which again is understandable as he's just joined. Only minor thing that concerned me a little is that he's looked a little leggy in his touches, but with how infamously brutal our preseason fitness routine is, that again is quite understandable.

No, no...not boring at all. By far the most interesting highlight of this pre-season so far.

Maybe i'll share my experience at Schipol another time.
My home airport. Curious to hear if you have fun or horror tales. I've learned if you use an airport often enough you can slip into the quickest lines quite easily

You aim your piss at the fly, and 80% less piss ends up on the floor. Oh yeah it's a fly not a bee.

Schipol is not a great airport, on par with Heathrow T2 to my mind. Difficult to navigate and full of Dutch ([emoji3]). The train service though is excellent

My favourite has to be Dubai for the business lounges, although once got bumped into the first class and nearly died at the opulence!

Indian airports are slowly improving from the turn of the millennium. My first trip to Bengaloru was via a military airport and the road to the centre scared me half to death!

Got diverted from San Fran to San Diego and that was a shit hole.

One worth a decent shout is Copenhagen. Well run, clean and easy to navigate with the train over the bridge or into the centre very regular

Flying from Liverpool to Dublin a couple of times a week for years, that lack of a rail service to either was a massive pain in the arse. At least Liverpool you're through security in minutes, giving it massive bonus points compared to bigger airports. Dublin on the other hand... The airport seems bigger and busier than the city centre. Just a series of mind numbing queues. Airports: the smaller the better.

And, for the record, business lounges in US airports are generally fucking shite, uncomfortable, hot & sweaty and offer very limited free food & booze (or at least that is true of United lounges)

Reminds me. Most Chinese airports are new, modern and architecturally interesting but facilities are usually crap. I do remember a flight a few years with China Southern on my way to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Arriving at my transit airport, Kunming, around midnight with an 8 hour layover.
I was heading to the business lounge to hang out and kip there - when I was told it was closed for renovations, instead a girl told me they had a cart for me and she drove me to a desk where I was told the airline was taking care of any hotel expenses - and I had a choice of around 20 hotels ! I picked one close by, was whisked to the hotel and told I would be picked up in 6 hours, then I was duly whisked back to the airport with an hour to my flight - awesome service.

One of the worst airports i've ever been, if not the worst, is Dhaka. After you've been there, you're not afraid of anywhere else.

Tokyo was another one that was very confusing, took me at least an hour to figure out how to get into the city with the trains. Hardly anyone speaks English too !

Stole a bottle of Jim Beam and Johnny Walker from the lounge in Shanghai a couple of years ago. There was noone else there, no staff apart from reception, no other customers. Just a load of bottles of spirits, some mixers and some stale sandwiches on trays. Couldn't help myself soz.

I’ve been fortunate to fly business class On a few occasions. It helps the fear of flying somewhat ha..problem is it really spoils ya, because then when ya don’t or can’t do business class ..it’s just awful.
.met Moira stewart the news reader in the business lounge at Heathrow. Her voice is amazing. She was really nice.
🙂

Try Lagos ! And getting your bribes ready.

I'll add Charles de Gaulle to the list of shite airports, based solely on my experience coming back from the final on the monday morning. Over 90 minutes queuing to get through passport control (when the electronic signs said 45 minutes max). Why are they so anal about checking passports on the WAY OUT of the country? You'd have thought they'd be delighted to be getting us out. Security (after the passport control) also had a queue, but it was only about 20 minutes

Fortunately my flight was delayed as I got to the gate 5 minutes after it was supposed to have left.

Yep, I just spent 2 hours in the security line to get out of Paris, also. What a crazy place that is.

Whoever said Copenhagen was good, these CDG posts just reminded me how shit it is as a departure place. Yeah, arrivals is great and the transfer to the metro is seamless - but when you're leaving they herd you behind passport control where there's no bar or anything and the queues are crap. Maybe it's just a non Schengen thing but it was rubbish.
